The CoD series

fivorothfivoroth Member UncommonPosts: 3,916

I was thinking of picking up the Call of Duty series because I haven't really played shooters a lot so want to try something fresh. Sick of all those RPGs................................

However, which one should I buy? I noticed that on Xfire the most popular Call of Duty is CoD 4 and the second most popular is CoD 2. Am I missing something or aren't these two games super old? Are they the most popular for PC? Any particular reasons? Should I buy one of those or the new Black Ops II one?

Is it true that for consoles you need to buy the latest one as everyone is playing that? Is it better to play it on my Xbox or my PC. I am quite happy to play with a mouse or a controller so that won't be an issue when choosing the platform. I actually like how playing with a controller takes more skill and combat feels more impactful.

buy the new one. most people play the call of duties for their online multiplayer. while i whole heartedly 100% agree cod4 is by far the best shooter ever released... the newest cods have the largest and most active online communities. be warned though... there are many young teenagers whose only wish is to troll you. they are fun though if you have not played them before. meet some new people get on the right track with them. and you will be hooked for years. then it will burn out. just like mmos do haha. Good luck tho!!!

Another innocent RPG'er thrown to the wolves... and they are hungry, they have not been fed someone who doesn't know their youtube screen names for some time now.

If it will be your first big delve into shooters. you may wish to start with a shooter or series that is a little less of a well built bridge.

Maybe WoT (World of Tanks). It is point-of-access-free-to-play (a distinction maybe only I make between what is called free and what is actually free - so don't rely on that as common knowledge terminology ffr). Imo it is also more fine tuned and less buggy...and far more realistic as it is based on tech that is long term documented and not new thing or things that don't even exist yet.

But I agree (if you are hell bent on CoD) the latest version is the best choice as it is most likely to have the largest online community (one version back will only offer hard core hold outs that you don't have a hope in progressing against likely).

The CoD games are pretty much 90% multiplayer, which means the newest is the most active.  In a few weeks, Black Ops 2 is out, so I'd start with that one.

    You make me like charity

hmmm that's actually pretty convenient. maybe also rent a current version for a week or two and play the heck out of it to get a few buddies on there, and familiarize yourself enough with basics. Then when the newest one releases you will only be as chicken-with-your-head-cut-off as everyone else is in finding their footing.

I'd wait for black ops, or practice up on 4. Have you messed with planetside 2? Not a bad game at all.

Wait for black ops 2. IWNet can't be arsed to do anything about the blantant hacking in MW3, it's completely ruined the multiplayer. Treyarch at least still allows for player run servers instead of only match making, and many server admins are quick to deal with hackers.

I also suggest BF3. It's a very solid fps, with a much larger variety of maps and game modes than the CoD series. Vehicle combat is also excellent. If you want a more CoD experience in BF3, I also suggest the Close Quarters DLC, lotta good instant action maps with no vehicles as well.

Planetside 2 is a decent outlet, although from my experience the gameplay isn't nearly as sharp as CoD or BF3. Additionally, the game is a mmofps, which means there's no even balance between teams and what not. It's fun, but I typically have more fun in more traditional FPS games.

Lastly, one can't ignore Team Fortress 2. It's free to play through Steam. It can be a bit difficult to find games with other actual players, but the bots are pretty good too. There are some extremely fun maps, and the archtypes are very well balanced.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will wait and buy Black Ops 2 when it comes out. I have had some experience with shooters, mostly L4D, Killing Floor, Half Life 1 & 2 and TF2 but never was particularly good at them (except HL1 :P). TF2 is actually quite fun, might play that till the new CoD comes out. I might also try BF3 to see which one I like more. I heard it is more "tactical" than CoD.

Blops 2 will probably be the most active after it comes but Call of Duty 4 is still a great game. You can actually select which servers you want to play on, not just click an join game hot button and be grouped with random people. So, you actually start recognizing the people that play on a particular server after some time and this leads to small communites and rivalries forming. Clans can set up and mod their own servers how they want to. There's no matchmaking or ranking system so there's no need for it the be on a closed system. Everything is more open. There's also mods like a paintball mod (gun replaced with a paintball gun that shoots paintballs that curve with an arc when you shoot them) and a freeze tag mod (if you get shot you're frozen in a block of ice and your team mates have to unfreeze you, if your whole team gets frozen you lose).

I only recommend 4 for PC tho, if you are getting it on console then definately go for blops2.

I own the Modern Warfare 3 poster but I don't own the game =)

I heard the direction of Black Opps is being a super solider but it might backfire but everyone on youtube compares Black Opps II to Halo 4 for some reason.

CoD multiplayer (or any FPS, for that matter) is bound to an account so renting doesn't really allow you to play online.

Don't know about consoles, though, that might work. I know EA doesn't allow it (net pass or whatever it's called).

As far as your choice of game goes; The current CoD is the most played - until the next one comes. CoD 4 will be played forever. Just saying.

If you're serious about FPS, at least try BF3 or BF:BC2 and Counter-Strike (I preffer Source ofer Global Offensive).
