Resubbing after 10 years maybe
I did come back briefly for Fippy server but now I am suddenly gripped by a need to go back to the roots of my MMORPG adiction. I just was so happy in that game and no game and I honestly mean this comes to the excitement that Everquest gave me. I also made the very best friends in that game. I know you will probably say you cannot go back and yes I am aware of that especially since Everquest itself has undergone some very drastic changes.The game will never live up to my memories of it and I may actually destroy my fond memories trying to go back to it.
I was not going to even try this when the Pro Sabien and Euro players thing came up but now they say they will not move the EQ 1 , Eq 2 and Vanguard accounts. So of late I have been feeling very nostalgic and convinced my MMORPG ennui will be cured by Everquest.
So I intend to sub so you do not have to worry about the restrictions but I need to know which expansion I should buy and which server to join and how I should level up. I was thinking of playing either a Necromancer or bard. I was a wizard all those years and years ago. I wanted if I will not be able to group at least experience as much of the game as possible and I heard a merc is the way to go to do dungeons even. I may not even last a week but I was hoping some old timer here who still plays may be able to give me some advice. My intention is not to raid or reach 95 or whatever the new highest level is but more a trip down memory lane. Visit Guk,solusek B things like that you know. My wizard was 60 when I quit this game so you can imagine how very long ago that was .I left to play Anarchy Online then.

I had gone back last year and did get some fun out of it for a few months. So if you're just wanting to re-experience for nostalgia, it can be worthwhile to go back and explore. The mercenaries have made it so you can play just about any class and do fairly well early to mid levels. Just be sure to purchase the Journeyman merc and not the Apprentice (you'll see it the choices in a drop down).
Cazic Thule server seemed to be pretty active, but I hear Fippy is very active. I actually transferred to Firiona Vie since it was free to do so and I liked the server rules. I tended to see people throughout the low levels. But once there, you can't transfer off.
Although I had all the expansions, I really only got any use out of The Serpent's Spine as it added some decent choices for outdoor zones to level in later on. For me, the other expansions were too much about tasks and quests to progress so once I got to those levels I lost interest and left.
Really, the mercs let you go see and explore all those places you might not have early on. So I definitely think you still can have some fun for awhile.
Nope, it's like EQ2. Although with the last EQ2 expansion they didn't include the previous, so not sure if the upcoming EQ1 expansion will include prior expansions. I would just buy the cheapest most recent to get all those before it.

Thank you guys one final question. I was on 7th hammer before but not going to play my old toons so I need advice on which server to pick. Just PvE and using mercs probably solo since the purpose is to explore and just enjoy the game. Should I pick the FTP server Vox or Trakanon the last new server .
Will I have difficulty getting geared up while I adventure mainly just grinding mobs not really questing , you know playing the old way. I read about Defiant gear will I be able to get that or is it only bazaar bought and since I will not have any cash will it be very hard for me to hire mercs ?
I tried going back a year or so ago and it was rough. I just couldn't do it anymore. A lot has changed since the old days and I think nostalgia got the better of me. But that's just me. If you do decide to head back into game I hope you enjoy your time.
In EQ1, if you buy RoF (Rain of Fear) coming on November 28th you will get all expansions up to VoA (Veil of Alaris).
Each expansion includes all prior expansions up to that point.
I started EQ1 in September. I got up to House of Thule free of charge. I had to 1) either pay for VOA (which I did) or 2) wait for RoF which I would get VoA free of charge - but would have to wait until November for VoA to be available.
I can understand where the OP is coming from. I didnt grow up with EQ, but came across it recently after being dissappointed with GW2. I have been completely entertained ever since. No other MMO today comes close (to me).
To jump (back) in to EQ you have to be willing to accept a few truths. While the game has been updated for over 17 years its graphics are dated. Moving WASD turning with mouse is almost non-existent, but does work. There are MANY changes to bring it closer to an WoW "feel" if you want it. Meaning no more corpse runs (just XP deficit), glowing trails to lead you to destination, golden paths to help you level in linear fashion, etc. The beauty of it though is its not mandatory. You can completely choose not to use any of these features and just explore. Part of the challenge (I enjoy) is figuring out what to do. But you can easily bypass this by going to a plethora of websites that map out every build, which HOT zone gets you the most XP, etc. You can no molo (solo with mercs). This does tend to prevent the need for grouping at low level, but if you want group just go to PoK and join a guild. They are always recruiting (on my server).

Come to terms with the above and I cannot see you NOT having fun in EQ again. There is a TON of content, community is friendly, and population is decent (I'm on VOX where there are more low level players).
Yes the graphics are dated but once you get past that you notice other quite swell stuff. Like looking at a player and not knowing what class they were. Or having to actually type a text response for a quest. Then if you want you can go back to another city and the questing is all up to you you can just grind mobs if you want and the world is massive. Still kind of trying to find my way around and the interface is quite complicated with all the spell book and then actions and other commands. I had forgotten you get only what you memorize the spells I mean. That and other things really make the game more complex than what is available these days. I know the animations and the wierd way our character stands and runs .....that was kind of jarring the running animations. So I picked a newer race that did not have that bad animation.

I subbed and got a drakkin necromancer I started in gloomingdeep and a monk human in Qeynos. Was the town always this convoluted. How did I ever get around before ? It is quite shocking to learn how much I have been softened up by my later MMORPGs. Community is simply wonderful really great, it is so refreshing to meet helpful and nice people who do not insult you and make you feel small in general chat. People who stop and buff and talk. Liking it a lot just have to get used to the terribly slow combat and dated graphics.
Kick it! I just returned as well. Yes, the graphics are dated, the major cities you knew and loved are vacant, and the combat is slower than molasses.... but you know? I am really enjoying the game. Not just for nostalgia, even playing through these areas I have never been in actually is fun to me.

everquest and anarchy online are my favorite online games still to this day.
i went to wow when it came out, and by the time i got back around to everquest (a year or two) my server was gone, my characters were gone, and i could not remember my friends names and the ones i could i never did find again..it ruined the game for me.
i was in an organization in anarchy online called shadow army......i lost contact with them after a few months of being away from that game as well. and that game also became very empty and boring to me after.
if you do not mind needing to make new friends and the memories you had will not ruin your next experience i would say buy them all..i did and the game itself is still very fun, .i can still manage to have more fun with those games than i do with most of the newers ones. its just different
