No, there was no program who detected the bots.
No, there was not a research done,
No, there dont have special tools...it was just A BIG MASS BANWAVE!
Good thing is that you could unban yourself in less then a day if you provide your email/key/char name to them so they can search in your account and check if you are a bot!!! Best company ever, best game ever, for dem fp2 games.
around 4.000 accounts banned for no reason

I LOVE GW2!! BEST GAME EVER!

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.
Funny part that gamedevs always ban innocent players.
My personal experience though is that the innocent player that you played with for so many years or read about on the forums that get banned usually don't tell the entire story.
devs don't ban at random will, certainly not where it matters paying customers....

When I wake up, the real nightmare begins
It is great, just don't play like a bot and you won't get banned in the first place. This is precisely why I love Arenanet so much.
Not me man, relax!!! Tell me why few thousands innocent players were banned for nothing ? As for me... Oh, i quit the game 2 weeks after ive dinged max lvl. What to do ? Farm dungeons? For a skin? Play spvp? Do WvW? So opposite realm get the keep while EU is asleep?? Fun while it lasted....NEXT!
Thanks, ive played few games that really blow my mind and GW2 is just another themepark easy game.
you got proof that they are innocent?
As you say 'thousands of innocent players' are banned.....you got proof that they are honest players? Because I take it you got inside information that's usually only available to the technical team in Anet.
I play EVE Onlinee for God knows how many years now, I know many 'friends' that got temp+perma bans because the devs are 'always banning innocent players'.
And they ALL came to the forums trying to get attention of the wrongdoing by the devs, they ALL socialized with their friends and corps/guilds, they all were active on Teamspeak etc etc....but in the end they were breaking the EULA.
And in ALL cases they turned out to be botters, RMTers, exploiters after all. and I learned it the hard way by having some RL friends - who wouldnt do anything wrong ever intheir life for 110%- botting in MMOs.
So..where's the proof outside of emotional players crying about them getting banned?
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Everyone on official forum who performed Restore Acces steps, got his account back after the one responsible search trough his account. Gold, Map Completion, bla bla.
A bot is usually 1 lvl 80 with 2% map completed.
That's a gold farming bot. Gold farmers aren't the only ones who use bots.

Why do you care about ban waves? You quit and don't plan to return.. I'm confused.

Get over it. It happens in every game. Innocents get caught - just appeal the ban. GET OVER IT!
^^Pretty much this^^

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
LOL.
Obviously you've never owned and ran a company, much less managed one. And no, a manager at a burger joint doesn't count.
Every company makes their policies quite clear that, by law, a customer or any other person can request at anytime. And like every other online gaming EULA, if they suspect you of doing anything fraudulent, you're flagged.
Honestly, the whiners who were banned are the same people who think they're doing nothing wrong by participating in riots.
Case in point, don't do crap that'll draw attention to youself.
TADA!
2nd arenanet guy"yeah let's decide to that, should be good for shits and giggles"
AS IF!
This
because the one thing that really upsets people, is getting caught
This.
Real Players that played GW2 like a real person is supposed to play it (without thirdparty BOT programs) will get their accounts reactivated if you contact Support and provide them with what they need.
In return we get thousands of BOTs removed from the game. Not a perfect system but there isn't going to be a perfect system as long as the BOTs and their Masters keep trying to cheat their way in MMOs. There's the real villian. Even if I was banned (temporarily) I would mind it at all because there is a way to fix the problem.
A potentially problematic WIN for real Players, but still a WIN.
It happened in Rift, with Trion banning people who weren't botting but got caught in the bot ban frenzy. It happens. If you think it doesn't you are either niave or just - well let's not go there.
They can appeal, what is the big deal. Better they catch the bots (so that people, you were one, that complained they weren't catching bots) and now that they are, you are complaining.
First, I've been reading that thread, on-and-off for months as the thread is TWO MONTHS LONG. The way this is presented, you'd think it'd happened over-night.
Second, botting is not the primary ban reason in that thread. If you actually read the thread, it seems that most of those bans are for fraudulent/failed purchases and not accidental botting bans. And where '4,000' came from... As far as I can see, someone's pulling things out of his butt, but maybe it's in there.
So, two things. First, don't be 'clever' and buy the game, get the code, then reverse the charges. That's a crime and they'll (eventually because it takes time for the reversals to process through the system) ban your account. Plus they WILL NOT UNBAN THAT ACCOUNT. You'll have to start over.
Second, make sure your CC Company doesn't generate an automatic fraud-alert/stop-payment on your purchase. I know CitiCorp, my card issuer, almost always runs a fraud alert on on-line game purchases for MMOs and has, in the past, stopped payment without my permission. So, now I call the fraud department every time I make a purchase from SoE, ANet, or whatever MMO to clear the alert.
(BTW, the reason is, for those who don't know, gold sellars used stolen CC #'s (or yours if you're stupid enough to buy gold from criminals) to buy access to games for botting purposes. CitiCorp isn't being stupid, they know the issue and work hard to prevent the fraud. But that means I, on occassion, am inconvienced by these anti-fraud provisions. This is part of modern gaming life and not the MMOs fault.)
In real life law and justice, I subscribe to Maimonides' principle that "it is better and more satisfactory to acquit a thousand guilty persons than to put a single innocent one to death."
But when it comes to banning bots, my principle is more "you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs."
Got wrongly banned? File a ticket. They'll sort it out, and when you're un-banned, you'll have a better game to come back to, with less bots.

Thats a pretty shallow and untactful comment. Do you realize that players who are banned don't have to go buy another copy of the game? Do you realize that they can just appeal the ban and so long as they provide the required info (which isnt much) then they'll be off the hook. Or are you just stupid and felt like throwing sand at a sand crab.
hehe, I guess I, of all people, are part of this massive wave of people who got banned.
I certainly doubt it is as bad as OP indicates, but since I don't have access to the forums currently I can not make a comment on it. :P
My account was apparently permanently terminated for gold selling. I'm not sure how in any way this could've happened since I've now confirmed no one has logged in or attempted to log in from any location other than this one, I've never received even a single bit of GW2 spam/phishing attempts, and no indication whatsoeveer that the account was compromised.
Also, there was no warning, suspensions, or emails sent explaining an impending ban. This was clearly a mistake on Anet's part and I only fault them for the mistake happening. I won't jump to any conclusions that they're suddenly incompetent or trying to get people to pay for the game again like some people might like to believe...
Also, there's no way they legit thought I was a bot or gold selling because, not only have a never interacted with or transacted with more than 6 gold EVER and that was to buy gems, I was in the middle of WvW actively runnign around, talking in map chat, and buying upgrades for Hills Keep. We're fighting against TC and Yak's in Tier 3 and that stuff was getting intense.
-shrug-
I guess I'll just wait for the problem to resolve itself. In the meanwhile, I was reading things like this to make me more assured my issue would get solved. Sucks that it happened but hopefully I can get over it. lol
Ive considered the game due to good WvW info the best clone of Dark Age of Camelot. in my stupid mind i thought this could be close to what i want from DaoC 2...but...WvW is not what ive expected.
Maps are small. EB has to be 3 times so the zerg should be useless. Borderlands must be the size of what 2 x EB in present.
They had nothing in mind about strategy in WvW. Its all about zerg vs zerg. Since ANet did not want to make the maps bigger so there wont be a zerg.....now every1 fights vs doors or vs zergs.
Good game!
