Sound Card Question

InfusedEMPInfusedEMP Member UncommonPosts: 43

I run my game audio through a surround sound system.  I run my chat audio (skype / vent) through a headset.  For the past several years I've used two separate computers to accomplish this.

If I install a sound card would it be possible to do this with just one computer?  As in running game audio to the surround sound from the sound card and chat audio to the headset from the motherboards onboard audio?

The setup may be kind of strange but I prefer to keep the audio on separate channels for various reasons.

I don't think you can with a sound card but an easier fix is to get a USB dongle like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Jack-Audio-Adapter/dp/B0058P0I2C/ref=pd_cp_e_3

That's what I use. Set VOIP to go through USB and sound to go through speakers.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

What is the onboard sound chip you have now? If it's Realtek then it's doable through the software without buying any extra hardware. I think my onboard is the ALC899 if i remember right and it does it as did my old motherboard from before this one, it was around 4 or 5 years old.

    It's VIA VT2021

The onboard audio on this motherboard:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128546

Its not possible.  When you install a sound card it takes over for the onboard device.  Windows only allows 1 sound device to be active for output or input.  The only way you can do what you want is without a surround sound setup or some pretty good sound drivers that don't exist currently.

I got it working using the USB method mentioned.  I've got a logitech G110 usb gaming keyboard and it's got jacks for a headset and mic.  I just had to tell each piece of software where to direct its audio.  Thanks for the replies!
