MMOs and single player RPGs have melded. We not play the "content" watches enimies go down and move onto the next game. Players chase the new content and devs chase the new players....a never ending cycle.
Gone are games of passion from the industry and instead we have soulless games that try to take as many working systems from other games and cram them all into a newer shiner content package.
What happened to the longevity of games? Sheesh.
"Players chase the new content and devs chase the new players....a never ending cycle" ... good .. so the entertainment will never stop.
"What happened to the longevity of games? Sheesh." .. what is so great about longevity? When you have only few MMOs, there is no choice but to play them for long. Now we have choices, and variety is good.
Do you complain when you finish COD and move onto the next game? Why should MMOs be any different?

I expect the next generation of MMOs will address that and OH WILL THIS CROWD HAVE A TIZZY.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
I feel really sorry for this community, always looking at the past and never being thankfull for what they got. Stuck perpetually in nostalgia and never acepting change.
Trully sorry.
In the end what you consider worse i consider fantastic, such is the nature of life.
The same here. The expansion of MMOs into so many other styles of games has given me hundreds of games to choose from. I think a lot of people here view MMOs as a genre, rather than a platform, and any evolution of a genre is always seen as a violation or betrayal of it. Anything that deviates from a modern version of their first MMO is viewed as not a 'real' or 'true' MMO and immediately bashed with all the standard catch phrases and buzzwords.
Would you rather see 8 crappy B films or an epic movie that is such a good film it is worth showing to your kids?
Just because there are more games does not mean they are beter.
Its clear that the longevity of these games has gone way down and that is why I see the industry as going down hill.
Interesting distiction between platform and genre though. Yep Single player RPGs being made into MMO for the extra cash......thats pretty much all we have gotten recently.
Just because there are more games does not mean they are worse.
It is a false dilemma. I would prefer to see MORE .. BETTER movies. Like this year, we have The Avenger and Dark Knight Rises. There is no reason why you can have more than ONE epic movie.
So there is no reason why we cannot have more than one good game and play them all.
Merging genre creates new experiences .. that is a good thing. Borderland wouldn't be so good if it is not a merge of RPG and FPS.
All I wish is for the Internet to stop trolling and let there be online games where people actually socialise, this includes all MMO's. If it were so, I would still be playing WoW and had friends in the game, but sadly it's not like that at all, instead it's a zombie of it's former self where horrible people exist and the game has been taken over by pandas. It just hasn't been the same since Vanilla.
WoW was great when I first started in April 2006, not anymore though...

If you're looking for an upcoming title that is shooting for longevity, you should check out this indie MMO...Really check it out. The devs are all over the forums giving details, they've designed a completely new engine from the ground up with a world that moves forward in time. Almost everything they talked about in this years PAX videos about what MMO's should have, this MMO is doing...
Originally posted by Amaranthar I agree. But some small move is being attempted, although it's still bogged down with old thinking of making games instead of worlds.
The only hugely successful mmo is bleeding subscribers, every "wow killer" has failed to be anything more than a niche game, even when it comes from the largest company in the industry.
Nothing with a lot of money behind it is coming out and trying anything new.
It's not getting worse, it's just that the standard for years is getting less popular, and people are becoming less likely to try things out due to how many failures there have been.

That is your personal opinion. I think WOW is better when LFR was introduced. Now i don't play it anymore but there is no point in ranting.
Originally posted by madazz I hope this doesn't come off wrong, but it sounds to me like you want the same old thing rehashed over and over too, just a different thing. That thing being forced grouping with little solo content... I can see forced grouping for some parts of the game, but you shouldn't need to group to progress in the game in general IMO. I like games that have a good mixture of the two.
Remember, this is mmorpg.com - where "innovation" means cloning the games of 1999, rather than the games of 2004.
There's a few upcoming games that are looking interesting, but I have been largely disappointed by the majority of recent releases. PS2 aside, I find myself playing older MMO's like Minions of Mirth and EQ1.
Just realized i've been doing the same thing in the single player market, the most recent games i've played being the Divinity series and now the original Fallout trilogy, though I think it's mainly do to the fact that i've already played recent releases and just want to try out stuff I missed out on years ago.
With regards to online games though, at least with most of them going the whole free to play/pay to win route, I can dip my head into the game and figure out if it's crap or not without having to waste a dime.

Must be you taste. I found gaming is more fun 2012 than 2011.
We have Diablo 3, Borderland 2, COD, Dishonored, Deus Ex .. and Marvel Heroes is coming.
I do also play PS2. I like the game, but they really need to optimize the frame-rate better.
Speaking of nothing, i like how mmo players that played WoW as their first mmo now call themselves "oldtimers" and refer to the new mmo generation as "kids" when infact, their the kids themselves and part of the new mmo generation
Only a kid (below 20) call other mmo players kids..or sons..
2010-11 brought quite disapointing mmos in swtor, gw2 and planetside 2. I wouldnt call PS2 an mmos, its just a massive zerg on who is the best at range. Very repetative.

:nudge: Those "kids" are, mimimum, now in their mid-20s. Maybe it's time to put away the comforting myth-that-never-was?
After all, the myth itself is now more the eight years old. A little threadbare and tattered, it's lost one of its button eyes...poor little guy.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Doom & Gloom attitude pretty much still the norm around these parts. Oh well.
Doom and Gloom is right. Hope things change in the near future!
Honestly though lets be real here.
The fact that economies all over the world are tanking right now has alot to do with the state of MMOs.
The genre relies heavily on indie companies and investment and right now investment is very risky given the state of the world economy.
I'd say once the economy picks back up(if that ever happens) then we'll likely start seeing some good MMOs popping up all over the place because people are willing to make investments.
But the way things are looking right now in terms of the economy we may still have a long ways to go until we finally crawl out of this recession. Even longer if things continue as they are because as of this moment the economic future for all is pretty grim.
MMOs are doing better today than at almost any time in their history, they're certainly not getting worse. By any objective standard, they are doing fantastic. The only people who don't like them are people who have played for a long time and want their way or the highway. MMOs have grown and changed into something they don't want to play and instead of adjusting their expectations, they sit around and pout.
I dont want to pay a crafter for his goods, because hes greedy even though i charge 10 times the going rate for loot.
I dont want social skills.
I dont want to chat.
I dont want a big world, i like being led around on a leash.
I dont want player content because im not creative.
I dont want decay on items because i like the player economy to be screwed.
I dont want a boss i cant solo.
I dont want to group.
I dont want to earn anything, i like things thrown in my lap.
I dont want to grind, anything more than 3 days to hit max level is an asian grinder.
I dont want to fish.
I dont want to solve puzzles.
I dont want to do anything but kill things fast and get all the expensive loot.
I dont want a world, i want a game, a single player console rpg game.
Add yours here..............
Yeah I would say the state of mmo's has hit rock bottom with all these konsole kiddies wanting console style single player rpg's. I mean we ended up with SWKOTOR4 instead of a real SWTOR mmorpg due to this.

UMMmmmm Ones a shooter and one s a mmorpg. You can not compare the two. If you did even SWTOR would beat PS2 as a real mmo lol. PS2 is massive, and the world is persistant. But thats it, nothing else even comes close to making this a real mmo.

You don't want to call PS2 a zerg like I did. They don't like it in these parts. Apparently it needs "co-operation" and "tactics".
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been -Wayne Gretzky
PS2 is massive. It is multiplayer and it is online. Fit MMO to a T. Whether players zerg or not, is irrelevant.
Stopped playing MMOs entirely.
Decided to check back at this websites forums and it looks like nothing much has changed.
Doom & Gloom attitude pretty much still the norm around these parts. Oh well.
There's always EVE. I may resub to check out the new content but then it's back to playing other genres probably unless CCP can really wow me.
Doom and Gloom is right. Hope things change in the near future!
Thanks,
Mike
