Irth Online - UO Reinvented

I have been in the Beta for Irth Online for several weeks now and wanted to drop a few impressions for anyone who is interested. I know this game has gotten some bad hype but read everyting before decideing.

Ok first of all when I first joined this game I was horribly dissapointed. Lots of lag, large vast empty spaces, no ingame tutorial, somewhat dated grahics and a slow paced combat system, lots of skills left unresolved. I heard they were shooting for a Nov 1 release and was dumbfounded.

However in the past week there has been a new patch released that solves many of these issues. There has been a large increase in FPS and the graphics render better. Quests are working now. Skills are being added in and tweaked on a daily basis. The Devs are really impressing me. As soon as a bug is found and reported on the forums it is delt with (in some cases it is fixed before the origional posts checks back again). And they are reeally listening to the player base. There are things that still need to be worked on yes. But the impressive thing is they are being worked on. This is honestly shapeing up to be a good game.

The game itself is very reminicent of UO in its first year. This isnt surpriseing as it is being created by the people who worked on UO: Sphere. It is a skill based game. This in itself is new and exciting considering that almost every other game on the market or being made are all Level based games. There is no grinding for levels in Irth, you use your skills to raise them, it is very fun. While there are magical weapons (both lootable and player craftable) they are not essential so there is no feeling that you have to have this or that peice of equipment. There is a faction based PvP system with three PvP factions to choose from, as well as another faction that is neutral (non-pvp) for those who dont enjoy pvp.

If you are looking for something differant from all the level treadmill games out there now and a game where the Devs really care about their player base and listen to them, then this is deffinatly something to look at. If you had previous bad experiences with this game I urge you to give it another try, things are really starting to get better.

I have to disagree with this statement. A skill-based system is a grind too, the results are just more immediate than a level system where you only increase your skills when you level rather than progressively. The reason why skill-based systems feel more fun is because usually these games have a whole slew of things you can do whereas level-based systems group them together as one. For example, a level-based system might allow you to become an artisan, which means you can gather wood and process it into a bench or something, whereas a skill-based system will have you increase your woodchopping skill, woodworking skill, and woodcrafting skill in order to build that same bench. It's more work involved but allows for a more hands-on approach and promotes specialization.

Yes, everything is a Grind. They usually mask it.

yes, proper way to put it would be that skill based system offers more freedom over your character than class/level based.
