Hi all, I am making the switch from EQ and have some questions:
1. How does faction work? From what I can tell there isn't much faction beyond the alliance/horde issue... aka, with merchants etc, do I get the same prices from any alliance merchant?
2. How does race affect your class? Only in terms of the racial abilities and bonuses? Beyond that a gnome warrior is as good as a human is as good as an orc? Starting stats are the same?
3. This is a little annoying thing - but is there any way I can map looking up and down to the keyboard? I thought that might be what "pitch" was but if it is I'm doing something wrong.
It's like there are a millione little things that are almost the same but not quite... but I am pleased so far and know I'll figure it out.
Thanks!

Hi, WOW has been designed around the mantra, "Thou shalt not think".
Simply grab the nicest looking toon, a weapon, some gear, then run around
the land doing the, "No-brainer" quests. After awhile you'll be lvl 60 and showing
of that uber sword. Take care.
and speaking of no-brainer, wtf is a shooter? Sounds like a no-brainer. That doesnt mean your dumb if you play one. So quit trolling, shut up, and play a game to have fun, not so that you can brag about how complicated the interface is.
Hey, I'll try to answer as best I can remember - I played the game as a trial for a while and while it was great in many ways the artwork just bugged me personally. Unfortunately, as a trial player I was very limited in communicating with other players (you can't shout or anything and was often hard getting answers to many questions I had - I tried to remember them all when I met people willing to talk; but I invariably forgot a lot of them).
1) Faction is as you stated - mainly by the two sides (alliance/Horde) but you can work up faction / reputation per each race -- mainly to use their vendors and especially to gain access to their mounts in some cases. The vendor pricing i'm not sure if they care as much about your reputation - but it would make sense. We'd have to refere to a real player in this case.
2) Race affects class by what classes you can be in addition to various racial bonuses and skills they get. For example - Trolls get a bonus to throwing skill and inflict more damage to animals - handy for a rogue in the wild. Priests also get a bonus spell ability based on their race - i think they are the only class to get an actual spell - the rest simply get the racial skills (like the Tauran footstomp). In the end, I think the differences are largely trivial for class/race effectiveness - that seems faily balanced. So you should be safe to play what you want without much worries.
3) Hmm, not sure about using keyboard for visual modifications. I personally use the mouse for all that stuff. If memory servesd right click allowed you to look around in the way you describe - but it's been a while and I only did it for 8 days or so.
Hope that helps and have fun! I'd refernce the various guides at *digs into old emails* http://www.wowwiki.com/Main_Page. I found a lot of useful info there as I recall.
[edit: d'oh! just noticed someone else already referenced the wiki page on this.. oh well!]
1. 2 main factions. Horde/Alliance both at war with each other, so if you meet somebody from you opposing faction they will attack (PvP server). After that you have the race factions and the neutral factions. Both you can gain reputation with. When you gain reputation you will recieve the ability to buy special things, like good armor, rare recipes and so on. You have to gain reputation to be able to ride some of your fellow factions mounts.
2. All races have special bonuses. Night elves have a +something % increased dodge chance, wich make them good for rogues. Like the previous poster said priests get special spells. Special here is that dwarf priests get fear ward wich is very important at several endgame bosses. So if you roll a alliance priest make sure it's a dwarf. They are very much needed by many guilds. Before you create a character I suggest you go to the website and check what racial bonuses they have.
3. I would think it's the "pitch" function under key bindings. Didn't get it to work either though.
Lol that sounds like your motto before you post tank.

1) Each race is considered a Faction. In addition there are other factions that starts neutral towards you like the Goblins, the various Battleground factions, the Cenarion Circle and other various factions here and there. Beside the 4 enemy race (that are permanently tagged as "At War"), you can build your reputations with all others.
Gaining reputation is done by completing quests for that faction and killing their enemies, same as in EQ, but with lot less factions.
Gaining faction "levels" give you a 10% discount from vendors of that faction, permits you access to special equipment and mounts. So, yes, not all alliance vendors will have same price if you didn't build up your reputation with all 4 races.
2)Each race has different starting stats and different racial abilities. These do not make much of a difference, however, class-wise. Sure, an ork hunter's pets do more damage than a dwarf one, but all in all, all races have nice racials and you should choose your race/class combo by your own liking more than stat/ability wise.
3)ah sorry. i use mouse look all the time, so i never used the keyboard to look around at all, mouse is so much better for it for me than i never bothered with the keyboard.
