Call for the Horror Genre

Upon searching through the Genre's, here you should see one listed as Horror, and that is "Bloodlust", which look slike someone made it in their garage. On top of that, i don't think it's even active anymore.

I think the Horror genre is being overlooked by the big boys, but I don't understand why. A Horror MMO doesn't have to be a complete Shock Value game, nor does it have to be a game that creates any fear in the player at all. So don't confuse the Horror genre with actually being startled or afraid, in this case.

We've got fantasy everywhere, and Sci-Fi runs a slightly distant second. Then the tag-alongs of Historical and Real Life Simulation come up from way below. There's a triad that should exist, but only two of the three are alive: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Horror. The ingredients for a great time.

The first and most obvious question is what type of game would a Horror MMORPG be? Well, to come right out with it, I think "Call of Cthulu" or "World of Darkness" would transition well over into a Horror MMO quite well. The table-top to internet idea has already been conceived and D&D seems to have something nice lined up. If it does well, maybe White Wolf will jump at the opportunity to do something new in a field where pioneering is slimming down.

But this doesn't have to be limited to converting a table-top into an MMO.

I just think that the playerbase for a Horror MMO would be out there and would love for one to come along.

Seems like it should be right up there as a major genre, but it's just ...not.

There was one in development a while back but it got canned. Sorry cant remember what it was called but it looked good.  Kinda horror in a wild west setting.

Maybe come out with a "Vampire The Masuqerade" mmo. I'm not sure how they would be able to accomplish it but heck...Blizzard turned Warcraft into an MMO so who knows.

    Exactly

There is some talk amongst the posters over at the White Wolf forums about a World of Darkness MMO. WoD is the overall name for the "Vampire:the Masquerade", "Werewolf:the Apocalypse", etc. games. I don't know if anything official has been said though. It seems to be wanted, but that's as far as I think it's gone. Perhaps White Wolf is waiting to see how Dungeons and Dragons Online will do, which seems to be the ultimate table-top to MMO conversion.

    Here's hoping.

I'm assuming that means that one day you plan to do something with the idea that will benefit us all. Otherwise it's just wasting brain cells, right?

Horror is best when it's unexpected. Unless you're talking a zombie theme and most people aren't even affected by that schtik anymore. Let's also not forget that for a good horror game, most players would have to be the "victims" of some "monster" and most players get frustrated when they die alot. Oh yeah, and how many people would act "horror movie stupid"? Yeah, nobody.

I could see this as a multiplayer adventure game. Each player is a drunken, horny teenager and they're staying in the spooky abandoned mansion and the computer would randomly spawn the "monster" whenever the number of players in a certain area dropped below a certain level. There would only be one way to kill the "monster" and the goal would be to find out how.

Ultimately, only the survival horror genre could work as an MMO. Games with zombie settings, (christian) post rapture settings, and fog covered small towns (Silent Hill) would be the only settings that you could use and they just wouldn't be that scary. If you know what's going on, then it's not frightening. Ditto if the main characters are just a bunch of place holders for scene interaction. Horror is an emotion more than a genre and it only works with the right pacing, and characters that the viewer / player actually cares about. Otherwise it's just a campy adventure story.

There's really only so much content you can milk out of a MMOG before it descends to grind status. The element of surprise which is so important to "horror" in general is completely absent when you start repeating the content...and content creators cannot create content faster than users can consume it.

It's a doomed prospect to begin with, other than the idea of a "vampires and werewolves" themed game. But then that's a masquerade (no reference intended) of a genre, not an actual "horror" genre product.

    I disagree.

You're confusing the idea of Shock with the genre of Horror. Only cheap Horror creations rely solely on the empty value of shocking people suddenly with a random monster attack. True horror is when you are genuiniely creeped out by something, and you take that with you afterwards.

That being said, it's understandable that this is next to impossible in a game. When you go into a Haunted House on Halloween, you aren't expecting it to be uneventful. You know that it's supposed to be scary, and the creators of it know that you know that. Since you are expecting to be scared, the only thing they have left to work with is simple shock value.

Same goes when buying a game. If its in the "Horror" genre, then you aren't expecting to be a knight killing dragons and saving damsels in distress really.

So put that aside. A Horror MMO would have no choice than to be an MMO after all. In this case, playing "victims" would not be a good choice. So, you'd have to be the "bad guys". But to avoid a City of Heroes/City of Villains catch, it would have to have more depth. I mention things like Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocolypse because they would be perfect for this. It would go so far beyond running around and biting people on the street. Just as guilds in an over-played Fantasy MMO war with each other, so would clans and tribes in one such as those.

Even without the shock value, it would still be Horror. If you can't see Horror in things outside of shock, then you have been numbed by the number of shocks you have received, and there's probably no cure.

That is honestly one of the most idiotic things I've heard in months.

for sure man....that would make for a good mmo imo. why couldnt you make a mmo from a vampire based pnp rpg game?

also has anyone seen the movie underworld? vampires vs werewolves would be a kool ass setting for a mmo as well imo....

I would wait for your reasoning behind saying that, but it's probably not very good logic.

If you are used to watching horror flicks that startle you rather than try to use any brain power whatsoever to be scary, then you should run up on a cat and scream a few times and look at the similarities. It's too easy to just insert a monster that jumps out from behind a door than it is to write up scripting that makes you look under your own bed later than night.

Ok... I dont want to keep you guessing

But I am planing to pitch a zombie survival game. FPS MMO.
    Some special things about it.
No leveling ,no skills, no exp - just survival . And persistant world down to core meaning of it - changed with every player action.
It is very diferent than any mmo on the market...so the chances for it to be accepted by mainstream game company are slim... but who knows ? ::::20::

It could be interesting to have a "Dawn of the Dead" type thing. I love zombies.

I would love to see a mmorpg of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It had a nice interface and the talent/skill system has great potential imo. Too bad that its like 99.9% unlikely that theres actually gonna be a mmo game like this:( I just love beeing the vampire once and scaring people instead of beeing scared n stuff^^
Another good horror would be alien vs predator...which was rlly scary at times. Too bad its an fps. mmofps kinda suck as far as i know, but maybe there is a way to combine it with rpg elements...
Anyways, these are just dreams :(

If they made an MMO based on the movie underworld, that would be cool.

Different Vampire and Werewolf clans, running around in the night hunting your prey, open PvP against the opposite race, clans of the same race fighting for dominance.

    Would be awesome...
