Whole World Map Comparison (New - Old)

TLDR : Here is the whole new map in comparison with the old one. More or less of course since an unspecified amount of error might be present in the comparison steps.

Ok well i wanted to see the whole world size so i needed to match the old DF map with the new ones with the help of some base points.

In order to be convinced for the accuracy open the base point comparisons as a new tab in the browser (ex. firefox) and compare them.

FIRST MATCHING

Old DF map : http://darkfall-beta.maptastic.net/map/images/map_4096.jpg

Old DF map with the new higher ress Part overlayed :  http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640914/img/DARKFALL/WholeOld-PartNew.jpg

A few Base points (among others) for the first matching

Old Lake : http://www4.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640907/img/DARKFALL/LakeOld.jpg

New Lake : http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640906/img/DARKFALL/LakeNew.jpg (Take a closer look on the thin river parts also and how they match)

Individual map boarders : http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640908/img/DARKFALL/Lines.jpg (They match quite obviously)

SECOND MATCHING

Whole map of the new agon as an overlay on the old one : http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640918/1024/DARKFALL/WholeOld-WholeNew.jpg

Additional overlay of the new higher ress map : http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/11640919/1024/DARKFALL/WholeOld-WholeNew-NewPart.jpg

A few Base points (among others) for the second matching

MY OPINION

Accepting as a fact that my comparison is more or less acceptable to be based upon to form a generic opinion about the new world map i can say that :

- The new main continent isn't much smaller in comparison with old one.

- The new surounding continents look a bit more compact.

- Lots of water has been removed in between the new main continent with the surounding ones. So now they are much closer but isn't this going to be bad for the naval part of the game in the near future?

So even though i'm of the opinion that the bigger the map the better for the exploration and the longetivity of the game i should accept the facts that :

- An enormous map might prove to be a hassle to walk around after a few months of game time and in the long run.

- A more compact map will make the world feel more alive and populated which might in the end offer more thrill to the ones who seek it.

- An enormous map is more time consuming to rebuild and thus the overal visual quality of a rebuilded smaller map will be higher, etc.

So in the end based on all the things i've seen AV doing for the new game and how i see DF:UW changing for the better i believe that i should trust AV on the whole new map Pros and Cons thing and then see after the release for myself to decide and criticize if needed.

How did you get the rest of the map? I don't see it in any of the videos. I see the portion you posted but none of the rest. The fuzzy part. Did you just make that up or is it in a different video? Just wondering if you could break it down a little for me.

    Yeah sure i'll explain.

Of course it's not something i made up.

Its a map shown as a whole in the baresark video on the upper right corner. It's very low ress and it was taken and resized by the DF community to be used for comparison reasons.

Though until now it was the unknown scale that didn't allow people to form a more specific idea about the new world size. A problem i'm trying to solve by matching the up until now released maps.

There's no way to know if it is an improvement or not without actually playing the game. The thing that bothers me is how the world still looks goofy with 4 random islands in the corners, alongside the map which has seam issues. Basically looks like a quilt that was just sewn together. Mountain ranges rarely flow from one chunk to another and it just looks weird. Oh well.

They most likely reduced the size of the world because they felt that players did not interact with each other enough.

I must say this world design is horrible, so many unnatural enclosed areas and weird regions.

It's hardly noticable when running around in game. The seams are just a consequence of the map zones forming a grid and the high level of detail on the world map. Furthermore, they've done away with any pretenses of it not being a grid and seem to have drawn a linear grid on top. It would blend a lot better without that grid over it. Admittedly though the world map even for original DFO had a bit of an unnatural look to it. You don't run into weird barriers in game at all, though.

Unless you had to swim out to one of those islands in the original you wouldnt appreciate how much of a hassle it was.

It sure seams that way on the map with the grids, but i promise you, once you're in game, you'll not even notice those. They just flow together perfectly, it's not you'll notice "oh i just changed from this grid to that".

I remember when I played the trial I never noticed the map squares in game. It truly felt seamless, you saw the diferent squares composing the map in the map but it never felt the same way while playing it was weird but it felt seamless.

True! I'm not too happy they made the map smaller though :( Ofc it's still larger than any other MMORPG(except for EVE, I guess) but if game is good it's going to get crowded as shit. Oh well, they can always add continets post release I guess.

They needed to make the map smaller. They want more player interaction. I am sure in the beginning this would have been easy to accomplish with the old map but after a while people would spread out more and encounters would be less frequent. They were trying to make it so there is more PvP. More player interaction = happy players
