Don't Starve is actually playable in beta form if you preorder off Steam and you get a extra copy for a gift. In Don't Starve, you're a scientist that gets dropped off in the wildness with nothing and you must gather & craft to survive. If you don't build a campfire by nightfall you'll die within 10 seconds (found out the hard way). Official release late March 2013.
Starbound is like the spiritual successor to Terraria and it'll be way better. There's actually a personal story to it and hundreds of randomized planets to explore with random difficulty & monsters on each one. Release is probably Q1 2013.

I had been keeping an eye on Don't Starve, but I hadn't even heard of Starbound, so thank you for that link. Don't Starve looks like a very interesting and slightly creepy game, and I'm a huge fan of Terraria so Starbound looks fantastic.
I love these sorts of games.
We don't know if its better than terraria though, we haven't played it.
