The Question of Travel.

checkthis500checkthis500 Member Posts: 1,236

I've heard that this game is going to be fairly massive in terms of land area.  I'm wondering if people will realize that they'll have to localize, or if they'll clutter up the rating system and forums with complaints about travel time.  Any insight into the question of travel will help me out a lot.  I'm looking forward to this game, and I'd love to have a game where people have to localize, but is it so?

Just wanted to insert a poll for people's opinions on this.

Lets put it in another way, would you want to be smashed up together and share a monster spawning place or would you rather find the best place to level where no one will find it. Unlike some people I don't like to share all the time and if I find a good spot to level in peace I am not going to tell anyone, except a lucky few.

This way of play seems to be real evident in DnL, and if it's as large they say (around 50km) then they are going have mounts. That's a good thing.image

Also I noticed there are some waterways, lakes and or rivers maybe  we can swim as well. I hope before release or soon there after boats will be available.

I should will not want to be swiming with sea monsters around.

    For travel:

    1. Everyone will be able to teleport back to their main apartment in the main city of Al Drifa.
    2. Active mana fountains create a portal chain. If your alignment has a good contiguous portal chain you will be able to get anywhere within "civilzation" fast (a big if!)
    3. Defenders on a defender list are portalled to a fortress under attack
    4. Public transport (balloons, Dragon bus) are available in some areas.
    5. Many mounts available including personal flyiing dragons.
    6. Everyone can hang glide and snow board down a mountain.

So localization means not having any active mana fountains nearby (only one mana fountain per barony) or having the mana fountain chain cut by the opposite alignment or just not completely built.

See I'm not a big fan of the portals and such.  That's one thing I didn't like about UO.  You could portal anywhere, I see that this is more of a designated portal area, but to me you should just have mounts or pay for travel, with no portals.  I think this will cause people to form more tight-knit groups and get to know eachother by name, instead of just knowing the people in your guild.

I can understand not liking portals. However, in DnL if you stand in the middle of the world and pick any direction to travel....the edge of the map is at least 100km away.

Without "some" type of portal system it would just be too big to get around.

To quote myself, that's why it's important to localize.  If I played a game that was that huge, I wouldn't think about it in the sense of "I want to travel everywhere"  I'd think of it as more of, what is a reasonable distance to travel, and how do I call this place home.  I prefer to plan out trips that would essentially move you.  So if I'm in a certain starter city, I'd travel until I found a place I enjoyed, and people I enjoyed, and make that my home, not traveling more than I had to in any direction.

But then if it came to fighting, or going on a long adventure/hunt with some friends, I'd plan it out and have time to travel, knowing that it would take some time to get back to what I called home.  I love games that make people localize.  That way when you're out exploring for hours, you're truly exploring because you're "away from home."

Then I'm happy to report that the devs will be trying to accomodate you.

Yeah I'd play the game on that fact alone.  I have yet to see that in a fantasy MMO.  But I think it's important if people actually want to get lost in a game.

To be honest there's nothing I'm looking forward to more than leaving my "home" and trying to get lost ::::31::

By the way, Ganareth is 40000km2 (200km x 200km, if it is equal, but the world is probably longer vertically). Though I think SoG will only have a portion of the world.

Just so you know SoG, I believe is 1/8th the size of DnL.

    I'll take

    a) Big game map
    b) Long travel time

Remember how much Plane of Knowledge port system ruined the feel and realism of EQ?
