I was going to until I downloaded the demo. The first two were much better, IMO.

I have it...and I truly wish there was a return policy for open software. It's really crap. I can't even say it's AoE2 with a 3d Spin on it. The interface stinks compared to the old system. The AI was recruited off the shortbus. Even zoomed out at max you're still forced in too close.

My suggestion: Wait for Rise of Legends or Supreme Commander.

"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

Ack I know the feeling too well ::::21::
Now I just download the demos first or I just dont even buy it.
If your looking for a good RTS, try Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. The expansion pack, Winter Assault, is nice too. That game is truly amazing and should hold me over til StarCraft 2 (if it will ever be announced/ released).

Keep an eye on Supreme Commander. That's by creator Chris Taylor, maker of Dungeon Siege and Total Annihiliation. TA still holds my attention to this day. Considering it was Game of the Year in '97 that's pretty good.

W40k does rock my socks. Really not too happy that the expansion adds the Imperials as the next playable race. I know they are trying to take the timeline slow but I want my Genestealers and Tyranids!!

I own it, I actually think it's a decent game. Sure it isn't the same as AoE2, but then again most people thatl liked AoE1 thought AoE2 sucked, like myself. Most AoE2 players were fresh to series and only went back to AoE1 after the fact. If you're looking for AoE2 with better graphics this isn't it. Haven't we learned that isn't what sequals are? The developers are always trying to innovate and everyone complains. Yet I bet you this will become the best selling AoE so far.

As for the comment about the AI, who cares? Don't play the Age series if you are looking for single player, it's all about the multiplayer.

Also the demo is a lot buggier than the final game, ES cleaned up the final version a bit.

The only thing I will complain about is the home city concept. I realy didn't like god powers and free units in AoM. I thought it wasn't in the spirit of RTS to give stuff away because it's unbalancing and unfair. ES did the same thing in AoE3 with the home city, there are completely free units and upgrades. Then there's the concept of leveling up, which I thinks kills the concept of a RTS where all players are equal and it comes down to skill and strategy. With the home city skill plays a slightly lesser role and like RPG's, your level matters a tad more, which is completely BS. I want a pure RTS with no free units, upgrades, or leveling. Sadly, I don't think that's going to be the norm anymore since reviewers are always pushing for innovation and an RTS/RPG hybrid is probably the future along with little side activites like the home city and free powers.

I agree w/ whoever said it was too crowded. That really ruined the game.

I heard that the developers were trying to make a unique game while keeping the "Age of Empires" feel.

My major complaint is that I can't run the game well on high settings. The settings that I could run the game smoothly in makes the graphics worse than AoE2's.

  • I enjoy the game. I agree that it's not the greatest RTS ever made, but it has its moments. The home city thing isn't perfect, but I do enjoy the customization it gives to each nation, and I hope that concept of providing a long list of things to pick and choose to tweak your chosen side to your liking gets refined and placed in other games.

I do have alot of fun in multiplayer, and I'm playing nations I never expected I would. Like Russia. I'm usually into limited numbers of elite units in these games, but damn if Streletsy aren't a blast to swarm in with.

The home city is a good gimmic to get people to keep playing in single player mode. It needs to stay offline though. I don't think leveling up has a place in multiplayer RTS.

Yeah, forgot about AoE 3. If want something similar try out Empire Earth 2. It's pretty good.
