Why does my machine choke when running TSW?

MikeJezZMikeJezZ Member UncommonPosts: 1,268

AMD Phenom II X6 3 GHZ

nVidia GeForce 660 TI

should work flawless on your rig ... hmmm

    other games are ok ?

i'd go thru the settings, game, windows, bios

    check themperatures, drivers, messages

TSW ran fine on my old dualcore and now superb on my new Bulldozer.

The game was running as smooth as butter for me until the B2P change. I thought it was just the Savage Coast where I was questing at the time, but seems to be affecting all zones.

Might just be the servers melting down from too many players. While I would barely see 1 or 2 people before, now you can't look anywhere without seeing another player.

You need to update your drivers ^.^

Drivers and everything should be okay. I've laid down the latest beta drivers from nvidia yesterday to see if it solves anything but i doubt it. Gotta check when I get home from work.

But everything is fine. Drivers, everything.

I've only have few other problems, as in Far Cry 3 ran with a strange performance too. Otherwise I dont have any problems.

You can check the technical forums or customer service for help.  Are you running it on DX9 or DX11?

It used to happen to me too till i changed my hard disk. I bought a new SSD which is must for gaming anyways. No more problems.

and, are your HDs functioning in normal parameters?

    DX 11.

Try bumping down to 9 as a test.

    In DX11:

    - I get very often stuttering, bumping down to 2 FPS, then goes abit up to 12, and then to 28 which is MAX.

    - Game is allmost unplayable

    In DX9:

It runs a bit more smooth, I still get stuttering/freezing frequently, but not as much,

I get allmost same amount of FPS as in DX11. A little more, but really not noticeable when playing.

My machine runs GW2 around 65-90 FPS in all situations.  In TSW I can't get above 30 FPS most of the time.  I'm not sure what the issue is but it is def' not my rig.

    My rig:

    i7 920 OC'd to 3.8 Ghz

    12 GB DDR3 RAM

256 GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD

    Nvidia 660TI's in SLI

    SB X-Fi Titanium

I'll do as others suggested and bump down to DX9.  I've tweaked every seating I can think of in Nvidia Control Panel, updated drivers, changed fan profiles in EVGA Precision X.  Ran it without Precision X controlling the cards, etc.  No luck no matter what I do.  It causes my cards to run hotter than I would like as well.

Hopefully they get the game patched to run more efficient.  I think it's on their end not mine.  Time will tell I guess.

Running ATI Radeon HD 6870/Phenom II X4 BE/8GB DDR3 RAM and get 30+ fps with DX11 and max settings besides AA which is reasonable. I get 60 FPS in GW2, but the difference is to be expected from a game that doesn't use tesselation and other DX11 features TSW uses.

Edit to add: My GPU never rises above 70C and CPU stays ~55C under load.

    It's the game.

There are times when I get great FPS.  Then I'll walk a few feet into a garage of a building and suddenly the game is a slideshow.  Other times I can just be walking along in areas I've walked along just fine before, and suddenly the game freezes.  It seems as if it has crashed, but actually if I just wait 30 seconds or so it'll function again, with smooth FPS.

When you can predict where the game will massively stutter for most people who stroll under an overhang, it's generally not your computer, but the game code.

    My computer for reference:

AMD Phenom II 965 at 3.4 GHz

    12 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3

    RAID 0 SSDs on SATA 3 (6.0Gb/s)

    Two 7970s in Crossfire

    2560 x 1600 resolution display.

40-50 FPS in kingsmouth town areas, a bit higher in wilderness areas of same zone.

Edit: DX11 mode, Ultra setting preset.

I would play at 7680 x 1600 resolution but Funcom is blatantly ignoring the issues with Eyefinity/Surround that have been in place since Beta.  Kinda odd considering it works much better in Age of Conan.

You shouldnt be comparing it with GW2, it's like comparing Skyrim with Witcher 2. The Secret World is simply far more demanding and technologically advanced than GW2.

    REALITY CHECK

    But...GW2 looks better than TSW?

I have a feeling though that TSW is more fun, but hard to find fun to play at 5-15 FPS.
