Square Enix has confirmed that it's Los Angeles office has been hit with a round of layoffs. According to Develop-Online, Square Enix has indicated that the layoffs will not affect any of its MMO offerings including the upcoming re-release of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
In order to ensure it is operating effectively, the Square Enix Los Angeles office has reduced its workforce. This was a difficult decision and we wish the best for those affected by these changes. The decision will not have any impact on the operations of MMO titles. Customers can expect those services to continue, including the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Always sad news to hear about layoffs, but in the last MMOFTW, they were talking about this and suggested that game development is like movie production or construction where some workers are seasonal. They've moved to beta stage and don't need the same sized staff. Until this is more acceptable, people will keep reacting like layoffs must mean a game or studio is in trouble when they are more likely moving toward a different stage where a smaller staff will be suffice. I don't know if this is the case with SE.
If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.
Because of this quote: "The decision will not have any impact on the operations of MMO titles. Customers can expect those services to continue, including the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn."
