...and when aiming as a caster or archer, do you need to put the X right on the target, or does it still hit the target if the crosshairs is near it?

Been watching this video here.

Those are old DF1 videos.  Have you watched some of the new video releases?

In the old game, arrows were affected by gravity and would arc.  So you needed to aim higher with distance.  If you were to shoot an arrow straight up it would land in front of you many seconds later.  Some spells were instant rays that were good for only short distances.  Othes were bolts that flew straight.

Depends on the type of spell you land. If its AOE or has some radius, you don't need to hit right on, although it will do more dmg if you do. Then there are spells which like bolts or rays which you need to hit on the enemy.

Archery, you need to hit right on, but the arrow will have some sort of arc when you shoot it and if you are aiming at a guy who is stopped and you throw the arrow to where he is and he then moves to the side, you might not hit.

Who is your friend? No1 :D

If you are in a clan, those are your friends. Also if you are in a party (and clannies) had a shield on top of their heads (at least in DF1).

Best though is to look at your friends armor and looks to try to distinguish them (different races also helps).

So if there is a huge battle in Darkfall 2010, is a lot of it spent confirming whether to swing by checking colored nametags?  Or does it just turn into a random clickfest?

Also are there any confusion type spells to make nametags appear different colors when you're aiming at someone?  cuz that'd be awesome.

Well that's where battle awareness and positioning come in. There were a few spells to help "fix" targets and to disturb battle view.

Wall of Force (WoF) creates a ball of gravity that pull targets to its centre (helps keep enemies in the same place and prevent them from running so you can hit them more easily).

There was a blind which you cast to the ground and every1 looking at it would go blind for a few seconds. There was some sort of snow storm which would create a big white blizzard, hampering vision in it and beyound. And a few more spells that messed up vision.

There were also espace spells, like stormblast which created some sort of explosion which launched you away.

These spells could be joined to make you go farther, like casting a WoF a bit in front of you and then casting a jumping spell: you would be propelled forward and gain momentum by brushing the WoF.

Have you ever played a first person shooter game? It's exactly like that..... just the bullets are 5x slower.

Depending on how far the target is, and how fast they're moving, you need to "estimate" where your spell is gonna meet with your target.  So if the target is running to the left, and you're 30 meters away from them, then you want to fire your shot let's say 2 meters in front of them, so by the time they get there, so does your fireball.  If you aim directly at them (x on the target) then by the time your fireball gets there, your target will be well out of harm's way.

Clan members were bright green, alliance members were dark green.  Party members had little "p" shield above their head.  Basically everybody that wasn't green, was an enemy.

In sieges, at first, it's kind of easy to tell, one side is one one side of the field and the other side on the other so you don't need to worry about friendly fire.   After a while as pushes are made and gaps are closed and things get chaotic.  You might have 3 enemies drop into the middle of your 20 friendlies, then you really gonna have to watch what you're doing, because chances are any offensive action you take will end up hurting your friends instead of them.  Of course there are ways to deal with this, but if your'e unaware of what's happening around you, you're probably gonna help your enemies more than you're helping your friends.

    .

    pretty much this.

If you are not in any clan/alliance then they all show up as mostly red and you are screwed.
