    he asked for an mmo..

anyway, i would recommend Final Fantasy XI and Lineage 2. Final Fantasy XI lacks the custom thing, and it lacks PvP (tough pvp is planned). Lineage 2 lacks custom, and is more solo friendly. but it has open pvp.

If you aren't against older games.

Asheron's Call has the best gear cutomization I've EVER seen :)

I'm telling you now it would be tough to play though.  Because you'll get your arse whooped by people who pay to play quake online heheh.

only the 'hardcore' gamers stayed in that game and they all are RPK, there's no politics or anything. Just kill anyone who's not on your team.

PVE is fun too, it's one of the last arcard style MMO's out there.  You can dive into a nest of giant bugs with 20 of them on you and survive.  Your character runs at the speed of light(but the animation just get's choppier)

WoW is a good game though, I'd recommend my favourity game but it doesn't fit your criteria as well as it would need for you to enjoy it.  Take a break from WoW for 3 months and go back, it'll be more fun when you go back again.

Star Wars Galaxies matches alot of the things on your list, except the Fantasy part.  SWG has probably the best character customisation in all games, pretty much no two characters look the same (think the Sims 2).  Customization spreads through out the game too, as you can get your weapons, armor, clothes all custom made by crafters to match your specifications and/or colour.  You also can get a house (or many houses :p) which you can then decorate how ever you like using all objects that you can carry (some of the stuff people do is really amazing).  Lol, you can even colour and texturize your ships (as long as its not a TIE variety).  You could also go completely all out and make your own player city!

PvP is pretty good.  It's not on the huge scale that WoW supposebly has, but it's definetly there and I find it alot of fun.  PvE is in a good state now with the three expansions, the latest one, Trials of Obi-Wan has the best PvE the game has seen yet.

If you can get around the Sci Fi setting, come join us, and make sure you pick the Chilastra server image

    CoV.

Before X-Mas, it will be a freaking blast, a game like no other.  Yes, at X-Mas the dev will prolly ruin the game and implement some nerfs and destroy the gameplay, but until then...2 months of the BEST product on the market.  Play CoV now, not in 2 months, NOW, before they nerf.

Final Fantasy XI I think might be up your alley, if you like a challenge.

-community: One of the best out there, get into a Linkshell and you will have a ball. Definitely more mature
than the WoW community. Many people willing to help and courteous.

-Story: Of all the mmorpgs out there, none come close to the Story FFXI has. With 3 different story lines(main game and expansions) plus small quest chains in the cities, you can not go wrong here.

-customization from character to items and gear: Sadly this is where FFXI fails, due to the PS2 graphic requirements, customization is limited, although playing a different job with the same character anytime you want without losing the exp. put into other jobs makes up for this. Also a large choice of armor types CAN make you feel slightly unique in the world.

-Setting (hate most science ficiton settings): All Fantasy, with some limited technology thrown in. Its got elvaans, galka, mithra, little tarus, goblins, orcs, etc. Good stuff.

-I love pvp: Ok, unfortunately again, the pvp in this one is limited to matches called Ballista which remind me of Quidditch from Harry Potter, fun, but not a major focal point of the game like WoW has. Still, it IS there unlike some other games out there.

-I also love pve: That's mainly what this game is all about. PVE and tons of it and very challenging. Unlike WoW, partying is a must, and you either love it or hate it. I love it personally, I mean why else do we play MMorpgs?

-surrondings/graphics: I personally think the graphics and surrounding are awesome, some may disagree, this game is over 2 years old but still looks good, plus new update coming when XBOX360 gets released. I liked WoW graphics, but FFXI graphics have a bit more realism to them and the feel of immersion is bigger in FFXI.

So if you like fun people, challenging gameplay, and full fledged fantasy setting and stories, come on over.

If you hadn't said you wanted good graphics i might have suggested Ultima Online. But then again the PvP is totally in the crapper now also. But hey they threw elves in! And there's thousands of items for customization. Just be ready to drop lots of rl money or spend day and night getting said items. Seriously though, I hear Guild Wars is a great pvp experience. Linneage 2 is also very popular. Everquest 2 would have been a great choice, but there's almost no pvp. I'm looking forward to dungeons and dragons online personally.

Tbh dude you have already discounted imho the best PvP game on the market that i have played Daoc.

I do like the look of City of villans hopefully it will corect some of the grind issues that City of heroes had/has, but that doesnt really cater for your sword swinging pointy eared ranger fetish ::::01::.

Uilwen, I am in the exact same boat as you, Sir.  I just cannot find a game which really puts it all together.  I've played Guild Wars, EQ2, WoW, R.Y.L. (the worst game ever), FFXI, and every time I look on MMORPG.com there are another 50 games being made.  It seems like all of these companies are in a huge rush to get some kind of product out that they're really not putting in the necessary effort to make a good game.

I've been reading up on ROSE Online and it has a very fun look to it.  I'm really hoping it won't be a grind-fest as someone mentioned before.  Are there any games out there that require actual skill?  EQ2, WoW, and FFXI were great games for the first month because that's when you're busy exploring the world and learning things.  Once you stop learning, you're just grinding.  I really need something with some depth.  Guild Wars was an awesome game (fun storyline, decent graphics, great interface), but it all ended rather abruptly and all that remained was PvP.  Don't get me wrong, the PvP was an insanely good time if you could find the right people to play with, but even that gets old.  What else is there?

Ok I have played DaoC,SWG,WoW,EQ2,and EQ oh and alittle planetside! But out of all those my favorite would have to be EQ! Yeah you guys might disagree cause the graphics arn't the great of todays games but that game rocks! I played it for about a week and my bro had SWG! I though EQ wasn't that great at the biggining cause I didn't know alot about it but after the 2 months of playing it I had the most fun of any game I have ever played in my life! I had to stop it cause my internet crashed and then I thought about getting EQ2 when it came out cause i thought it would be like the orginal but better graphics! But it sucked balls to me! I played it for about 3 months and it was no near as awsome as the orginal!

I think everyone who wants to play a good mmo should try one of the first oes to start the gerne! EVERQUEST! not Everquest 2 but the orginal! Play it for about 2 to 3 months and you will find that it is one of the coolest and most addicted games out there! And it just goes to show that graphics arn't everything! THIS GAME ROCKS!

SWG was boring to me! DaoC was alright! WoW was alittle boring! And the second Everquest I don't think lived up to the name! But EVERQUEST THAT IS A GAME TO BUY! please yall just give it a 3 month chance and tell me what you think of it!

I got rid of EQ2 But I am going back out to get the last 2 expansion packs for the orginal and I am going to start back up today!!!! EVERCRACK BABY! nothin like it!

    I would go with FFXI

Community- You can team with people and form a party or go solo.

Story- No real bases unlike previous FF's. The story is a lil weird just a city is under siege of orcs and its up to you and thousands of other players to save it. There is a good amount of quests to do though.

Race- You have a choice between: (from the official FFXI websire PlayOnline)

Humes- Originating from the Bastok region, Humes have spread to the farthest reaches of Vana'diel. This race is characterized by its equally balanced abilities, moderate intelligence, and high level of skill in numerous areas. This combination of traits has played a large role in Bastok's growth into a prosperous nation of technology and industry.

Elvaan-  A race of proud warriors, The Elvaan are the founders of two legendary orders of knights in the nation of San d'Oria. Physically, they are characterized by their tall, slender bodies and pointed ears. Their unshakable pride and faith in their beliefs is visible in each of their determined faces. Both males and females of the race excel in swordsmanship. Most Elvaan seem to eschew the business world, preferring an austere lifestyle as skilled swordfighters.

Galka-  The Galka are a hulking race of powerful warriors. The Galka's capital city, located in the Altepa desert of Zepwell Island in the southwest corner of the Quon continent, fell to an attack from giant ant creatures six hundred years ago. The surviving Galka spread throughout Vana'diel, and a large number of them eventually settled in Bastok. The sheer strength of their powerful physiques is second to none. They have used their skills to contribute to the construction and development of the numerous mines in Bastok. However, it seems that some Galka have less than fond feelings for members of the Hume race.

Mithra- The Mithra are a predominantly female race of hunters who live alongside the Tarutaru in Windurst. They are easily identified by their characteristic ears, which give them spectacular hearing ability, and their long tails, which result in an unparalleled sense of balance. They are known for their energy, curiosity, and their penchant for causing playful mischief. The Mithra enjoy a friendly relationship with the Tarutaru, and this attitude of mutual cooperation has made Windurst a nation of peace and prosperity

Setting- A medieval era. Like most basic MMORPG's and like most of the previous FF titles

Fighting- As of now it is only PVE. I have heard rumors that they are hopeing one day to put a server where you can PVP. Just a rumor i have heard it has not been confermed that i know of.

Graphics- It has a well orianted area. The map is very large. Just when you think you have descoverd it all you are mistaken. It is constantly growing. New exspansions are added on all. It is updated weekly. Makeing some of the areas look more "life like" It has a very good Enviroment and The graphics are very well done.

All in all this is a great game, best of luck to ya.
