Mark Jacobs brought up "sandbox" in article about new game

corpusccorpusc Member UncommonPosts: 1,341

in his comments yesterday on this massively article:

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/23/mark-jacobs-city-state-entertainment-releases-some-sort-of-teas/

now, before you direct anything personal at me with all kinds of assumptions on my stance

i believe all this themepark vs. sandbox debating is generally ridiculous.

i don't see MMOs as fitting just one OR the other category.

just bringing it up cuz the majority of YOU guys seem to like debating the subject endlessly

The destroyer of Dark Age of Camelot needs to be banned from games, he should be banned from ever playing games too.

He had also been vaguely alluding to more expansive future projects in a recent Touch Arcade interview: http://toucharcade.com/2012/12/12/the-toucharcade-show-bonus-interview-with-mark-jacobs/

It's mostly about City-State's iPhone game March on Oz, but he makes some remark about it being a stepping stone to bigger projects, so not surprised to see this.

Don't care to get involved in a debate about which MMOs are best but it sounds like Jacobs would be looking to expand the genre a bit into new territory, which certainly makes the most sense for an independent developer.  And fair to say there's a lot of unexplored territory in MMO design.

EA won't be parting with Camelot IP so curious what the IP of this would be.

EA doesn't own the Camelot IP. No one does. He can make another game based on Camelot if he wants.

Because EA plans on killing ALL of its remaining titles with useless first day release DLC packs, and broken Free to Play models.

LOL love the new DAOC names.

Would a daoc like game even work as sandbox? I see people griefing each other rather than "defending the realm".

Some people on this site wouldnt care if a sandbox game was developed by Hitler, Pot, Bundy, Gacy and Dhamer as long as they got their wish to play this illustrious sandbox model. Really wish some of these people who throw aroudn this fanboy moniker would take a serious look in the mirror.

I'm sorry but lets keep Mark Jacobs entrenched in socail/minor gaming mediums.  I dont want this guy no where near an MMO.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Sandbox games do not even work in sandbox games so of course it wouldnt work in the king of themeparks.

Honest question, what do you have against Mark Jacobs? I dislike that he brought out TOA and all that, but maybe I am missing something more?

all the hate here on mark jacobs when he is still the one who brought you dark age of camelot and created mythic. He made some mistakes and bad decisions , get over it seriously. He didnt kill DAOC either just because a few people here hated TOA. The population did not die by no means after TOA or catacombs or new frontiers. People here attack the guy when the blame should of went to rob denton and jeff hickman , yet you never see any hate to them because mark jacobs actually posted comments backing his team. If you really wnat more proof go look at who is leading the swtor dev team and look at just how well its doing.... there is your answer of game killers right there.

Say what you will about Mark Jacobs. Every dev makes mistakes. But the guy did make what I consider to be the best PvP MMO ever made, DAOC. I think that new project he's doing is going to be DAOC 2. Of course it will go by a different name though, since I think EA owns DAOC. I will be closely watching his new game, and I'm praying to the MMO gods that it is in fact DAOC 2.

    Well thank you.

I do disagree on one thing though, and that is TOA. I found the population didn't drop RIGHT away, but eventually everyone I knew stopped playing once they figured out what TOA was all about. My opinion and experience, and I have no numbers to back it up at all. But that is what happened in my little corner of the DAOC world.

Anyways, I won't hold it against him, people make mistakes. I think its great they took a risk. I'd rather see risks taken then things just staying stagnant. If he is looking to make another game in the same light as DAOC, then I am all for it and will keep an eye on it.

    Too much sandbox sucks.

    Too much Theme Park sucks.

You are correct.  I meant "Dark Age of Camelot."  Camelot more broadly is in the public domain.  That's not to say that if he were to hew too close to DAoC territory  EA wouldn't come out with lawyers ablazing anyway, but it'd be a tough suit to win.

    a) lol @ darker age of camelot

    b) mythic?  Okay, cool, I liked DAoC.  Then they turned it into a festering pile of shit.  Will remain skeptical, but curius.

Nothing but I detest most things people call sandbox.  Sandbox is just stupid.  here is the ultimate sandbox:

    image

Thats about what it boils down to.  Absolutely no working systems in place to give any structure.  Life is a sandbox and the last thing I want to do with my free time is build something when I could enjoy the ride.  Like in real life places like 6-Flags, King's Island are infinetly more fun and enjoyable then going to the beach and building sandcastles.

Sandbox is just a marketing buzzword these days with all the different personal definitions people have, simply because they listen to industry leaders that just want to sell more copies.
