So far it looks like GW 2 is winning by a landslide but it is still way to early to call.

I voted TERA. Not so much because it is so good but rather because of lack of anything else which is better. Lets hope next year will be better.

I'll be surprised if its not GW2. The competition is quite weak.

I noticed Rift's Storm Legion is beating out MoP for "Best Expansion in 2012".

I voted GW2. It seemed solid to me all around even though at the end of the day it may not have been my cup of tea. I took into account art direction, content, character models, animations, frequency of updates, combat, graphic fidelity etc. etc.

Since I didn´t play any of the other titles apart from TERA I couldn´t earnestly vote for TERA even though I wanted to. It lacks so much and art direction, combat and the Unreal Engine alone kept me around for +/- 3 months (in the west).

Guild Wars 2 is by quite a bit the best release of mmo's this year. runners up would be MoP and Storm Legion.

I bought MoP and Blizzards new endless content of dailies is not enjoyable.  Yes Rift has Dailies with Daily Raid Rifts, or Crafting dailies, or onslaughts and yes the go kill thing dailies.  Rift however did not base most of its content around Dailies though.  A lot of people do Dailies as a side game and take part in Zone Events, Raid Rifts, Crafting Rifts, Hunt Rifts, Instances, and Raids.  When I logged into MoP I found myself doing more dailies and needing them for basically everything that I got tired of the game.

I as well. GW2 hasn't 'clicked' with me yet, but I've been enjoying TSW a lot since I rerolled and subscribed for a while to thank Funcom for the B2P change (yes, I see how that's a bit counterintuitive, haha). And I feel I'm with Rift for the long haul, so far.

So far the poll results are expected. See GW2 and Rift winning.

Quick, someone dash to b.net and rally the troops!

KingsIsle will work up a special promotion of some sort too, you gotta figure.

    I still don't see the appeal of TSW - can't believe it's currently in 2nd to GW2.

I mean, I played TERA a whole weekend and would probably have kept playing for a little while longer if it was F2P... but TSW I could barely make it 3-4 hours.

My 2nd on the list would have to be Planetside 2 - even though I've only played for a couple of hours I see the potential.

However it seems like there isn't much incentive to hold territory and defend bases - easier and more fruitful to just keep re-deploying to new combat zones and keep swapping...

And for all the less than positive things I've said about GW2 - and the fact I don't even play anymore - it's still the best MMO released in 2012.

Maybe that is a sad, sad year for MMO gaming? I feel it's worth the box price for the enjoyment I got.

WoW: MoP definitely expansion of the year - but only other real competition was Rift: Storm Legion.

It will be interesting to see if people rally to Pirate101 again in order to dethrone GW2.

This is the main reason I never gave PS 2 a second chance. I am tired of playing MMORPG PvP games with no sense and purpose more than that of any FPS. Terrotorial control need to mean something and winning/losing them should also mean something, big.

Second reason was the cash-shop. A cash shop allowing you to quicker get better weapons and progress faster in a competetive PvP MMO, you kidding me?

For me, removing the subscription fee removed the feeling that everything had to be finished as quickly as possible. Only having one primary quest at a time goes from being a harsh limit on what I can do to being a good design choice to make the quests feel like you're moving ahead instead of in a bunch of tiny circles. Now the quests are interesting, and if they take longer to complete and it takes longer to get the SP and AP to improve my character, it doesn't matter because I have an unlimited amount of time to play the game. It's kind of like SWToR's quests done much better, without the rest of the game getting in your way and without the usual limitations of playing without a subscription.

    ** edit **
I would still vote in GW2 as best of the year. It didn't grab me, but it released feature complete, grabbed a bunch of people and did it all without a subscription. The people I've talked to who played it enjoyed the heck out of it and wouldn't shut up about it.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

TSW's appeal is the setting and the fact that you make your own class with the skill wheel.  Also TSW provides a bit of challenge to the solo player unlike WoW type games where you can faceroll all the solo PvE without even looking where you are going.  Cartoon fantasy for the younger crowd is overdone.

I would vote TSW for game of the year with GW2 being a very very close second.  Neither game is outstanding though.  Maybe next year will be better...

Edit:  I have no idea how Pirate 101 even has enough players to dethrone anything, regardless if their players made an effort to vote.

this is easily the best year for MMORPGs since 2006 (Burning Crusade, Echoes of Faydwer, LOTRO right around the corner)

GW2 and TSW are the two best games since LOTRO.  SL and MoP are the best expansions since at least Mines of Moria.  LOTRO and EQ2 had strong rebound years after a lackluster 2011.

Well the poll been up a day now and GW 2 has over 50% of the votes with Pirate 101 only 1.4%. I guess this shows the vastly different demographic of this site compared to massively.
