Lineage 2: Earth Dragon Slain and Wallpaper Contest

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

One of the singular features of MMORPGs is their ability to provide interesting and extremely dynamic stories, quests and obsticles for their players to enjoy and overcome. Lineage II has announced that Arathas the Earth Dragon has been slain on their Teon server:

On October 29, 2005, Antharas the Earth Dragon was conquered by the Untamed alliance of the Teon server. Almost 120 players battled for hours to slay the mighty dragon. Congratulations to Teon for this accomplishment!

Lineage II has also announced a wallpaper contest, offering prizes to players who can create visually stunning pieces of artwork to decorate oer desktops.

wow, fighting some dragon for hours...  that must be fun.

That's what made diablo 2 fun, was fighting the same monster and watching it never die for hours.  That's also why I love WoW instancing and don't play the game anymore, because I love fighting the same exact mob as every other mob just with a hell of a lot more HP so it takes me a lot longer and I get a feeling of accomplishment for fighting the same mob I just fought, just with more HP.  I also loved trying to kill the epic mobs in shadowbane and thought they were a cool idea since no one actually kills them.  I did like that in guild wars a lot of the monsters were the exact same just more hit points.  What I didn't like was that Ultima Online actually had a chalenge to their combat system and you had to know what you were doing to succeed at fighting an ancient wyrm.

In fact to sum up everything that I love - Shadowbane beating on a rank 7 mine tower for a full hour.   Same thing since that dragon is just one person and can only provide so much AI, it couldn't be that exciting.

When will they learn that fast paced is good and that it's boring to fight something for hours?  Regardless how cool it looks.  I'd rather fight an army of 1000 soldiers and gain a few accomplishments like levels, and mad loot then to fight just one big dragon that looks cool but casts the same exact spell over and over.

Okay well if you want to take it that harshly I was at the raid; it was an intensive 4 and a half hours (was in reality almost 5 maybe... lost track of time). Antharas has almost a godly amount of hp and the only reason anyone is able to take him down is to many debuffs some specializing in precise coordination... 3 people 5 seconds to plant... if failed then have to wait a certain amount of time like 2-5 minutes... Then on top of that the AI is actually really suprisingly good considering that most mobs in L2 are plain no AI. Antharas was the pride of the creators. When summoned the game turned into a 1 min cgi introduction to Antharas, not allowing us to control anything. The dragon had fear skills which made people run away, mass stun, mass petrification, aoe attacks, and also it had aoe magic. So in essence it was not a dull hours of whacking at a mob. It was intense and you should have heard the shouts on vent; it truly is quite an accomplishment considering its only been killed 3 times in NA.. (2 on gustin, and once on teon) It makes WoW epic raids look like a normal raid. Don't flame what you haven't experienced.

I played lineage 2 for awhile I know what it's all about.  The pvp, the pve is definately not it's focal point.  In fact, the entire leveling GRIND was the worst I've ever experienced.  The pve wasn't fun at all and 5 levels was really only one level since you only got skills every 5 levels.  It was the only game I ever used a bug on(if you positioned yourself at an angel on a hill the monster couldn't hit you at all) I didn't however try this dragon, so excuse me on that one... but I couldn't imagine it being that intelligent unless the developers (or game master) was playing it.   Sure it might hit hard and have uber spells, but like you said you just get into a rythm and it goes away.
