New player: PVE required? pvp clarification?

AesperAesper Member UncommonPosts: 90
Hey everyone. I'm a pvp player but was curious to see if anyone with experience could key me in on if pve was required to get the most out of pvp at all? I'm most interested in structured pvp. Will I be able to be at full potential if I only do spvp with he intent to do guild battles eventually? And finally is there a strong spvp community or is it mostly wvw?

You can gain Karma via WvW and use it to buy Karma gear...you also earn money doing WvW objects that can be used to "buy" your gear...and the WvW zones have gathering materials you can use to make or sell on the Trade Post for even more money...however the PvP depends on the server.

As for full potential, thats a loaded question because full potential means different things to different people. Right now, the difference between top gear and middle gear isnt as vast as in other games...yet.

Thanks for your response :) full pvp potential, that is. Will I be equally competitive to someone who is in spvp with a max level pve character if I do not have one? I'm assuming that's what structured means, but want to clarify.

PvP requires very little PvE to fully enjoy, if I remember correctly Dyes are going to be what you might need to do PvE to obtain. However that is the only thing. Other than that, all stats are based on your amulet which you can select from the amulet vendor which is found in the mist lobby, these amulets are free, as are starter weapon, runes, and starter armor.

Armor and Weapon acquired in PvP is all for the looks and epeen of it all. However much the presige of these skins have already been lost, mostly due to how much easier it was to acquire renown through pub-games rather than tournament games.

Currently matchmaking and ranking are priority for the next step of SPvP, however private/custom games should be released shortly after.

Not 100% sure about dyes being PvE only, though I'm sure I've probably missed something.

If you are a PvPer stay away from this one. The whole PvP system is designed for PvEers who casually PvP now and then. Most PvPers are long gone.

You don't need to PvE at all to do sPvP.  That said, if all you want to do is sPvP then don't buy the game, lol.

I'm fairly new to GW2, but I have tried both the random PvP (battlegrounds) and WvWvW PvP. My highest level character is 50.

I don't think you need to do ANY PvE in order to do the random PvP battlegrounds. You can work up your Glory, buy tokens, and harvest PvP materials without ever doing any PvE content. This sounds like the closest to the kind of game you mentioned.

The World vs World vs World PvP is completely different. Yes, you can enter the WvWvW battle at any time, and you will be "up-leveled" to 80. However, you will still have the same old weapons, traits, skills, and armor that you have so far achieved in your PvE career.  So, this is NOT where you reach your full potential, let alone any usefulness, if you are not yet Level 80 and well-geared.

The other type of PvP offers the experience closest to what you defined.  However, there are two options for finding battles in this type of PvP.  One option is you allow the "system" to auto-assign you to a battle. The other option is to manually select a battle that is in progress. The former option typically leads to under-populated and lopsided battles, both in your favor and against. The latter option may put you in a battle with players that are much higher ranked than you, but it is a much more enjoyable experience.

EDIT: And yes, I agree with others here.  This is not a PvP game if that is all you're after in an MMO experience.

That is a flat out lie. The PvP system is designed so hardcore raiders do not get to go in and spank everyone else around with their l33t d00d gear they spent 5000k hours raiding for. As for the PvPers leaving, I am in a 500+ member alliance of PvP guilds that have been around since UO and EQ that says otherwise.

Of course, you could just play any of the current free MOBAs which does the PvP better without having to buy into an unfulfilled hype machine.

And OP don't make the mistake of believing what GW2 fans tell you. They fooled many of us. Don't become their next victim.
