    Here's a good list to reference: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/349518

There's no one definition for 'sandbox' so one list is as good as any other as long as their particular selection criteria is included as well.

    Nice work, sandboxer.

We've had a thread running for a while that compiled a list of sandboxes. Probably worth to look into.

It seems that way.  Their web site won't load.

Funny, I wanted to try two other games I found in this thread, and it was a no go with either of them.

I went to the Dawntide website, and when I tried to make an account (apply for open beta), after typing in all the standard stuff and pressing the "Create Master Account" button, the website gives me an error:

"Failed to connect to mysql server for game account."

Looks like they got to fix their database connection.

Then I tried Islands of War, and that site says it's down for maintenance, and it's been down all day... if not much longer.

    Oh well.

Dawntide is gone - it hasn't been in development for over a year i don't think and pretty sure they closed up.

Ok, thanks.  Looks like the 3 games I tried are all dead.

Sadly, the many sandbox games in the list I did try, well, suck.

That's not being mean either.. I mean, these games are TERRIBLE.  The graphics, sound effects, character models, animation, engine, mechanics, design, etc, all terrible.  I feel like they are the level of a few high school of college kids working on a school project.  I majored in Computer Science, and took Graphics for my "project sequence" as they label there, and many of the projects submitted by just 1 student were of better quality than most of these games.

I've been looking for a AAA sandbox for YEARS now.  Actually, *many* years.

I think they CAN make money, instead of the endless themeparks that get produced, and end up going bankrupt, losing over 50% of their player base in 2 month, then going F2P just to keep afloat.

Why can't investors, and a company put together a AAA sandbox game?  There's such a vacuum for one, and I know there are countless players who would pay for it, even a sub.  One example, Ultima Online.  It's STILL alive after what, 15 years??  Long after so many themeparks have bit the dust.  But still, no company wants to pony up and develop one.  I think it still exists because there's no upgrade path for lovers of that game, and lovers of sandbox games.  It still is sub-based and still makes money.  I wish game developers, publishers, and investors would wake up.  The market is simply saturated with themeparks and just about every one I've seen come out in the last 5 years went downhill just 2-3 months after release.

Darkfall has been closed down for months.

It's sequel, Darkfall:Unholy Wars is in early beta testing and should be released in a few months.

Also, there are a bunch of emulators for previous sandbox titles, but we can't discuss those on this sight.

The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

A... Age of Wushu. AAA Sandbox with 20 million players in China, and in beta here must be on your list.

It only has 1 or 2 themepark features...quest you never have to do after the first couple hours(tutorial)m and dungeons that you never have to do at all. The ONLY thing you don't have is terra-forming, and personal housing. You have open world guild housing though.

There is not a game on the market that gives players more freedom than AoW, and EVE. Not even close. Seriously Ben, that was silly post.
