Magic System

eagled2eagled2 Member Posts: 13
The last time Trials of Ascension was in development there was never any details about the magic system which was dissapointing. They actually posted details about it a while ago but I didn't see a post about it on this board. The official forum post about it is here. This system makes magic seem more rare and daring then I have ever seen, which makes it all the more exciting to me. Any thoughts or gripes about it?

I'm excited this game is back up and moving!

The magic system Chaos is proposing is so different than any i've ever played, I'm not even sure how to imagine it other than whenever I do actually see a mage ingame, my first instinct will be, "oh crap! is he friendly or otherwise? Plz don't nuke me kind sir!"

I like the idea of EVERYONE using stamina instead of the arbitrary "mana" system. Casting spells is always potrayed as mentally and/or physically taxing in every other MMO, but the only resource consumed is mana, or some proversion of rage or energy. This also seems to eliminate the question of what resource should a class use. I like it!

But now, i can't just spam spells, then pull out my sword and continue wailing because i'll be exhausted. :(

    Darn trade offs

If my undead panda's don't get you...

Good point. It certainly fits most movies and novels that use magic this way then the traditional MMO. Take Harry Potter for instance. Using powerful magic in those stories were extremley taxing on the body leaving the caster very week. This way not only makes it more challenging but provides a way of balancing powerful mages with everyone else.

I'm really excited by the idea of seeing things "for the first time" in this game and magic is a great example.  Even if you're not a mage yourself, it will be uniquely exciting to see someone cast a major spell because of their rarity.  All sorts of questions will emerge: what does it do?  how powerful is it?  how many spells has this mage mastered?  There's a level of intrigue that pervades the whole enterprise.  Not to mention the fact that the mages themselves have no idea what's out there for them to discover.

I love the idea that magic will be immensely challenging to learn and practice and also that good mages will be both rare and extremely powerful.

It reminds me of the early days of SWG where Jedi were something special.

I hope the developers resist the wailing of the children who demand to get everything now and will little effort.  Most other games have made progressing so easy as to be numbingly boring.  Keep TOA special.

I enjoy the rare magic idea - even as someone who has no plan to jump into it. It sounds like you'll spend most of your life counters building up the ability to do powerful magic (you may even need to restart your character and try again with what you learned). By the time you become a powerful mage - you'll have to be careful and judicious with your power as you won't have much life left to make errors.

Even in the LOTR books there were only 5 wizards in existance, and they weren't poofing everything into flames all the time. Nor were they all powerful.

What I like about the magic system is the fact that it will be hard, very hard to become a powerful mage. However, the ones that do succeed, will potentially be very powerful. This will make magic rare and when you do encounter it, it will probably blow you away (literally). It is also great that by trying to learn magic, you actually risk blowing yourself up as well.

Another thing I like, is the concept of having to craft your own spellbook. This adds yet another layer of danger to becoming a mage, because you have to travel to all corners of the world to find the ingredients for your book.

I am not too sure yet what I think of the concept of having to fight entities to obtain spells or spell words. But I'm sure I'll give it a go at one point and see what it's all about.

I've always pictured magic to be kind of like that.
