Computer Question (Wireless networks)

VicodinTacoVicodinTaco Member UncommonPosts: 804

I run a wrieless network off my Dell PC that's used by a laptop, and works in most of the house.  I'm thinking about getting a new computer to put in the basement.  The signal strength of the Dell TrueMobile 2300 is non-existent down there.

I'm not as computer savvy as I used to be....

Does anybody know if they make some kind of hub that would enhance the signal?  Any work arounds?

They do, though I can't say how reliable they are. They're generally called Repeaters/Bridges, though I've heard them called all sorts of names. If you ask someone at your local store, or search for repeaters on your favorite hardware site, you'll probably find one.

That makes me wonder. I'm going to be getting a laptop and want to use a wireless connection through out my house. My current computer is in my basement. I can get cell phone reception from down there and its only about 5 feet underground I'd say (7'5" foot ceiling). I also have a computer in my bedroom on the top floor that I want internet on. I don't have any phonelines up there to run my DSL from so I want to buy a wireless card and run it on my wireless also. If I was to place the router in the basement would the signal go through out my house?

You shouldnt have a problem with the equipment that's being sold now. Most brand name wireless hubs reach several hundred feet.Around my house i see my wireless connection and about 4 or 5 of my neighbors. All signals are good to excellent.

    Post lag? See stage 2.

Wireless bridges will help to refresh your signal through floors by placing them in stairwells. It's probably you best bet, and they're fairly inexpensive. Range and obstruction are your two biggest concerns with wireless networks, so your general options are moving closer to the source/hotspot, or sporadically placing bridges to refresh your signal and/or get it around obstruction.
