Have you tried crafting on the SWG TC's yet? I haven't but I'm gonna try get my crafting alts account onto TC on the next reset hour and check out the crafting side. From what I've heard it's not too different, just the forced grouping of different crafting professions (like Shipwright and Droid Engineering can't be sepereated) sucks.
Hmmm, a game where you can buy in-game coin directly from the devs in order to achieve.
Makes their crafting system pointless.

I dont need to try it. They took out decay, end of story.
No decay + 2 expansions with loot drops equal or better than player goods = another dumbed down pointless crafting profession
And I cancelled my account regardless once it was announced that SOE screwed us on the expansion. I wouldnt go back now if they rolled the servers back to launch day. A dishonest company does NOT deserve my loyalty or money

So why is your suggestion the 'right' one but I give mine and I am a troll? Sheesh thank you internet!
Wurm Online is good since It has one of the most detailed crafting systems I have seen and it has a TRUE closed economy. It is very difficult since it is trying to be a frontier sim. That alone keeps a lot of the dips away.
...as for decaying items, many constructed tools as well as the buildings you build in ATITD do decay over time, and need repair or reconstruction. Other items, like food recipes you cook for enhanced skills are only usable for a little while, aferwhich they have no effects. If you drop items on the ground, they will disapear after a while if nobody picks them up. Some cages you set up for catching some animals crumble if you do not check them reguularly...
This sounds like Wurm but only in a fantasy setting.. I wonder if they are the same company?
Why is the guy assuming all 30+ players just wants a good crafting system, period?? Get a pair of sticks and knit a sweater fot gods sake!
We who DO consider ourselves being a part of the "mature crowd" DO have few alternatives and will have in the foreseeable future. I am playing EVE atrm and that is pretty good. But anyways, we will have to wait until someone is smart enough to spend gazillion dollars making a solid mmo game (tactics, strategy, crafting, story, ART DIRECTION etc..), use the time it takes to make it perfect and then charge us 100 $ a month for playing it. And I tell you, for the right game, we would pay it and we would prolly play it forever.

I didn't say mine was right, your suggestion about Wurm is okay, but do you see me saying: Wurm Online, only the crafting is fun but the rest is utterly CRAP! No, but you did.
FFXI has, to my mind, a crafting system that's not a total loss (like WoW's is, really...). However, it doesn't measure up to what SWG had. I never played it, but by all account SWG had something really special. The crafting system was the only thing that ever tempted me to play that game. I'm sorry to see it get dumped by the wayside.
I am not into the crafting aspect but it is one thing that I loved about SWG (RIP). You had people that just wanted to craft or entertain. Those kinds of things made the game more interesting for me. I am also of the opinion now that most games are being developed to be somewhat easier to play.
I think the issue is that a year or two ago there were really less choices in MMORPG's so each game had a decent size community. Now that there are more games out there you just don't have the numbers to have those support type classes. People who want to play those classes are always going to be in the minority, so if you have a smaller population overall, the crafters/entertainers are going to be such a small part, game companies arent' going to worry about them.
From what i've read Roma Victor and Dark and Light seem to have devoted a significant part of the game to crafting. I would take a look at these for sure, I know I am, because like you I want to be a pure crafter.

Actually, the crafting system is about the only thing that isn't getting trashed. That and entertainment tradeskills. Of course, I have no idea how the no item decay thingy will eventually affect crafters.
As usual, I didn't read the *entire* thread so I am not sure if these have been mentioned.
Some of these games are strickly crafting / economy based, and some are not. Faces of Mankind has an entirely player controlled economy with player controlled crafting, however it is also an open PvP environment and has a lot of combat focus. There are plenty of others, but those stick out in my head right now for games with player driven economy and player important crafting. Of course, some more than others.

It's a good choice if crafting is mostly ALL you want... with some interesting other bits and bobs thrown in. If you're after good crafting in a traditional MMORPG setting, however... not so much. There's no combat and very little character customisation, which seems to be pretty important criteria with most people. ATITD is a great niche game, but it's not really a traditional MMORPG.

unfortunately, you are right, but hey, MMORPGs are still in their early age no? They will evolve, and hopefully, other concepts than combat will also be popular. I, for my part, is craving for exploration games... Up to now, I do it in the other MMORPGs, but they have sooooo small worlds! and the games aren't really constructed around exploration... But they will come, I'm sure, when more devs will mature themselves...
Carcajou the same applies to exploring as to crafting, try Dark and light! They are promising a HUGE world and explorers will have an integral part int the game
Yes: crafting, exploration, enigmas, creation, etc... anything else than combat! I'm sure they are large niches just waiting to be exploited. Not that they don't exist yet, but they are not common.
I would just LOVE to try D&L, but here is my other problem: I'm on MAC

I agree, try Saga of Ryzom. Harvesting system is done really well.
