First the ti series are a different monster from the geforce mx series. So basically someone saying he has a geforce2ti shows he has a better card then someone with a mx card.
Also the radeons are kept in one bulk .there are non pro and pro versions.there are some that function in like a mx card which are generally considered mainstream card. But since radon does not want to make the mistake in segregating the card they just use numbers instead.Nothing like mx or ti and seems geforce learnt from that thus the fx5200(basically sucessor to the mx440) does not carry the segregation but just a number.
he was just getting a general idea on what everyone runs... doesn't have to be perfect

Sadly, I bought the Geforce2 400MX without realising that the MX was the cut-down version. Since I rarely play games beyond the odd MMOG (EQ and EVE in the past) and the GTA series, I've not really noticed the difference.
However, I will upgrade for Horizons because I am running 1.4Tbird which should be a 2.4gig AMD but the MB I bought was DOA [dead on arrival] and I couldn't be arsed taking it back - it was bought from a trade fair but you had to return it to some shop in the middle of nowhere. I was busy at the time and just wrote it off as a bad liability.
When I do order a new MB so that I can finally use my 2.4gig chip, I'll order a new video card (Geforce 4? Need to check how good the various cards are by comparison with price) and a 512 stick of DDR ram to go with my initial 256 stick. RAM is dirt cheap at the moment so might as well buy it along with the other components.
Hmmm .. better check how much all of this will cost me. Fortunately, I have 6 weeks before Horizons ships at least.

Does anyone know of any decent sites where I can find comparison information between the different video cards on the market as well as prices?
Pc Zone.co.uk have the worst website I've ever been to (almost). Also, they charge for their archive reviews and it's far too late to go banging on my friend's door asking to have a look at his old Pc Zones. Will leave that for tomorrow evening.
Thanks in advance.

For good review sites of video cards you can check out www.guru3d.com or even www.hardocp.com . Hardocp usually links to reviews etc. You can also check out www.tomshardware.com they "sometimes" have some decent reviews. Check out the forums on hardocp also as they have quite a few good members who give readable opinions.
On topic I have a gf4 Ultra 5200 with 128mgs of ram. Need to step it up to a Radeon AIW 9800 pro or something. The general consensus of good gamers would say though to NOT go below a gf4 5600 nowadays for a good performer card.
im running a radeon 9700pro hasn't let me down yet but, i hear you need at least a 2.5ghz proccesser to power a 9700pro to full, any ideas? im on a athlon xp 2400+ right now which is 2.0ghz

Pravus, Thank you for the links. Ah! Forgot all about hardocp.com. Looked at the site in the past but I've never been much of an over-clocker i.e. not really a gamer as such.

Will have to check the base-line performance of the Gf4 5600 and see how it compares to similar cards price wise. Top end cards in the UK are shipping at near enough £400 (which is around $640 with the exchange rate). I think the most I would spend on a video card would be £150-£200 - like I say, not really a gamer. Once I finally buy a new MB and Ram to fit my 2.4Gig Athalon XP, my rather venerable Gef2 400MX will take pride of place next to my Voodoo Banshee in my museum of old Pc components.

Running a geforceti4600 right now on computer i use for SWG- no lag at all .Currently cost less then half the price of the fx5900 ultra and runs only less then 10 percent slower.
Only 4 cards out there has ever beat it in benchmarks- the FX5900(top of the line ATM),radeon 9700 pro ,radeon 9800 and the radeon 9800 pro.
It way cheaper then the rest by a mile and in performance it almost same as the radeon 9700pro(little slight edge to the radeon).
Not seen a game that would even make that difference noticable yet.
Oh and before murti says it is not a DX9 compatible once again LOL,I am playing full setting on SWG-a required DX9 game with no crashes,no glitches,no lag ,nothing bad at all
I wouldn't say the FX5900 Ultra is top of the line when the ATi 9800 pro does better in many things with better image quality. Both are usually considered top of the line but many consider the 9800 PRO as the superior card.
Anyway I agree that either card isn't worth getting atm and getting a mid-range card(GF4, 9600) and then waiting for the next cycle of cards(NV40, ATi's next card) would be a lot better.
New games coming like EQ2, MEO, Mythica will probably need a lot of power to run at their best.

FX5900 ultra ourperformed the radeon 9800 pro in becnmarks. However the performance was really minimal and does not justify the price difference between this cards.
Would say yes the geforceti4200 is a mid range card but the ti4600 is by no means mid range .Its price dropped because of the fx5900 successor that came out but before that it was top of line for geforces. Now it is second best to the fx5900 when you want a geforce but it is not a card to joke with.
Reason i brought it up the ti4600 up is that for the cost it gone to now it is probabaly the best card out there to buy.
Was hoping the radeon 9700 pro would drop price as much as the ti4600 but it has not.So the ti4600 gets my value for money stamp.

I'm really curious which bench your referring to if you can remember. Most of the ones I've seen are in favor of the 9800 or involve a Directx 8.1 quake3 engine(OpenGL) based game where the raw power of the 5900 excels or the game is "optimized" with it's own Nvidia datapaths programmed in that sacrifices image quality to increase perf.
The 5900(and the GF4/FX line) doesn't seem to do well with true DX9 games(not that mixed-mode crap) for example Half-life 2 and Doom3. Yea, yea, the doom3 benches show 5900 doing a little better but there are "reasons". But enough of that, I'd rather not get into that as it's a whole other discussion.
If you can remember the specific bench I'd appreciate it.
Oh yea... just wanted to add I have a FX5900 128MB and access to a 9800 PRO as well(my bro's). I kinda regret not getting the 256MB or the 9800 instead though.
Nvidia I believe is better for the Unreal Engine. I got the FX5900 128MB because I will be playing an MMORPG based on a modified Unreal Engine. Also, it was really cheap... Gainward for $250 or so. :}
I have the 5900 ultra with 256 ram. Love everything about it so far and cant complain. As long as it runs Lineage 2, EQ2, Horizons, and WoW effortlessly I will be very happy.

Thank you Hercules! Your posts have helped tremendously. Have checked out a few sites to compare video cards but I'm looking for medium cards. I am of the view that there's no point buying a top end card unless you absolutely MUST have the best graphics NOW because the cycle is way, way too short. Games never even make full potential of current or recentish components let alone tech that hasn't been implemented within games.
About to head over to a friend's house to check out his back issues of Pc Zones to find out about AMD MB's and a nice mid-range graphics card.
