After Obama in the USA decided against the petition of the building of a Death Star, in the UK people started a Kickstarter project to built a Death Star as in Star Wars.
Imagine, somewhere 2000 years from now, or so, when the first Death Star of the history of the GALAXY is ready, you have contributed one small part, a panel, a chair or something of the Galacic History's first Death Star, built by humanity!

Why the hell can't people get this excited over something a bit more realistic, not to mention practical?
Such as, I don't know, a ground to space maglev? Also a huge cost in resources, but not nearly to the same degree, and something like it is absolutely necessary to build a space vessel of that size anyways. Not to mention, we actually have the tech to pull that one off.
