Well, my guild from SWG(RIP) is checking out new games for us to move to since SOE destroyed it, and EVE was suggested in the general discussion forums. I have read a bunch of posts here, some positive, some negative, and have scanned through the online documentation but still have a few questions.
We have players of varying skills, but everyone works well as a team. How does team play work in this game? Especially if we all start at the same time.
Are there defined classes? i.e. Tank, healer, ranged damage... I know everything takes place in your ship, but are there specific classes for taking damage, giving damage and support types..
Is ship flying twitch based? This is a big one as a few in our group are not good at all in twitch based games, i.e. if you are familiar with SWG (RIP) they couldn't fly in space.
Is there any crafting in this game?
I think that is all for now, but will probably have more questions based on any responses.
Thanks for your time.

1.) Teamwork is essential, and is the key to success. Again, teamwork is the single most thing in this game.
2.) Its a bonus that you start at same ime, but not essential.
3.) There are absolutely no classes and no character levels. All skills go from 1 to 5 and influence various activities.
Roles, like tank, healer, etc. are taken by the ship you fly. And since you can change the equipment of your ship or fly an other ship altogether, you can take the role you want and change it at a whim. Also there are several roles that are no used in other MMOs (or at least not in that fashion, like ackler, Electronic Warfare, ..)
4.) Flying spaceships is similar to Starfleet Command. Either you double click somewhere on the backdrop to move your ship in that direction, or you use the context menus of an object to either fly to it, etc. It's *not* like a space simulator (Freelancer, X, etc)
5.) Crafting works like this: You have blueprints that you can research (for better build efficiency) and then you add minerals that you need to buy or mine. Combine that together in a factory slot (which you have to rent) of a station, modifiy several factors with skills like mineral efficiency and time and then a finished product appears after a while.
Hope that helps a bit

EvE is a MMORPG, wich in turn playing in team is the base in this game. You can do things solo, but when it comes to pvp or hard Complexes or missions...teamplay is very very important.
There are no "classes" in this game, everyone can be everything. I guess you should check www.eve-online.com for more info. There are ships that are good at special activities like logistics and support etc etc.
No, not twitch based. Its click-based:)
Yes, ship, weapons and equipment can be built. And i think also components for building starbases and alike. You can also research for blueprints.
Best thing would be to try the 14-trial together, read the forums at www-eve.online.com and get into a human corporation (Guild, Clan, etc) as soon as possible.
I hope this helped a bit

Thank you both for your quick response. Seems like we will be checking EVE out.

I live to fight, and fight to live.
goodluck to ur team...welcome to EVE and hope u san join some gang to meet other players
oh by the way u can see the 14 day trial here https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=100819&nogreet=1
hope to hear from ur team..
dont u dare start playing MMORPG unless u want to be hooked
Team Play is done by making a Corporation and you can all join it, so you have a chat channel just for your selves and you can shoot each other with Concord(the police) getting you. Also, then means you can go about recruiting new players into your corp. You can then decide who you all want to be, ie a Industry Corp, Mercenery, whatever.
No classes. Each ship you fly has different abilities which need to be trained for. So one ship is good at hitting from a big distance but not at close range, another good at close but not big range etc etc. each ship can be fitted differently depending on what you want it to do, so one day it could heal another ship abd another day kill.
Not twitched based.
If by crafting you mean building stuff, YES.(thats a big yes)

I think Eve would be the best MMO to move to from SWG. I was a SWG player and I put up with the last combat upgrade but now I honestly think they have lost their minds. SWG will sadly die off to nothingness because of the devs. I've beeen playing EVE for a year or so, its awesome.
I think that having all of your friends start Eve around the same time will be a great benefit since your skills train in real time and its hard for somebody to catch up to your skill level if they start after you do.
Like the other posts say there are no hard coded classes or restrictions like most MMOs have. You can be a "Healer" by flying a Logistics ship or any ships with certain modules that help other ships. You can do crowd control by flying a EW ship or any ship will specific electronic warfare modules that allow you to "control" your enemy in certain ways. You can be a "tank" by flying a tough ship with a lot of armor or shields. You can even be a "mage" type or "nuker" by flying a ship setup to do maxamum damage. Group combat is quite complex and important in Eve. There is a lot of strategy in group combat with Eve. Its not like SWG where you just need more Jedi than your enemy and you win. Depending on the ships that you and your enemy are in you can survive battles where you are outnumbered.
Every player can train any skills in the game but if your friends want they can speacialize in specific things essentially creating your own class. So lets say one person in your guild prefers crafting to anything else. He likes combat but prefers to spend his time creating stuff for the guild to use. This person can speacialize his character in manufacturing, research, and mining. When he creates his character he can set his starting attributes to high intelligence, and memory. This would allow him to train the crafting type skills faster than the combat related skills. Once he starts playing the game and gets some learning skills going he can then train industry skills and science skills. In the same amount of time that you get you character to be a good fighter he can get his character to be a good crafter. Although in time if he wants to do more combat all he has to do is train combat skills. Think of it like this, every person (character) is good at something. Like in the matrix (movie not the game) you can just plug in skills to your brain that you don't have although you don't learn them instantly. When you want to fight you plug in combat skills, when you want to craft you plug in crafting skills. Depending on what your character is good at doing your character will learn the skills slower or faster. So a character with high intelligence will learn crafting skills faster while a character with high perception will learn combat skills faster. Oh and you will never lose skills. Once you learn a skill you keep it forever.
Crafting in this game is awesome. Personally I like the SWG crafting system better but this game has a good system too. Unlike SWG the resources that are used in manufacturing do not have qualities that affect the final product. No item can be made any better than any other item. Every player makes the item in the same way no matter what so there is no variation in item qualities. Items are made from minerals which are acquired from asteroids. In order to get these minerals a player has to mine ore from the asteroids. Once the ore is mined the player uses a reprocessing plant which is located in space stations to refine the ore into minerals. There are diferent qualities of ore, some produce more minerals than others. The amount of minerals that the player gets is based on his or her refining skills.
Players manufacture items from blueprints. Think of these blueprints as real blueprints except they are electronic blueprints that you plug into a factory. The factory will read the blueprints and manufacture the item with resources that the player provides. The player doesnt need to know anything about the blueprint. As long as you have the bluprint you can use it to make the item. The player's skills will determine how many resouces are used and how long it takes the factory to make the item. Blueprints come in a few different forms. There are BPOs (blueprint original), BPCs (blueprint copy), T1, and T2 BPs. BPOs can be researched to make them more effcient and can be used an unlimited number of times. BPCs are copies that have a limited number of uses. Players copy their BPOs and sell something like a 1 run ship BPC for 1/4th the cost to make the ship. This allows players that don't own the BPO to make the ship for a cheap price. BPOs are really expensive. Also a player that has a lot of skills in research can research a BPO to make BPCs that use a lot less resources and time to make the item. So a player with no research skill and low indutry skills can buy a BPC and make an item with little resources and time.
