There is many misinformations in this thread. The most important: houses cant be choped down, with exception of houses in a 250 meters radius from the central point of territorys in the northern continent.
A house can be lost only if the owner dont pay the taxes. In the northern continent, the taxes will be settled by guild leaders that owns the territory.
Houses and a tiny area around them will be like safezones. Nothing can be stolen there. The players can use a scarecrown to claim more lands around the house, but these extra lands will be open to stealing (with punitions to the theft in karma points).

We have western players crying because they actually have to DO SOMETHING to acquire an ingame item/house......
Scroll up and read how these players don't want to put any effort into getting something, its comical. They want 'welfare houses' now lol..
Im actually embarrassed to be a western player at the moment.
This is a great thing XL, don't change a thing. Many of us WANT to work to acquire something and NOT HAVE IT HANDED TO US BECAUSE WE'RE LAZY.
Good job Jake!
That's not why they are upset. They are upset because they expected to have the ability to adventure to some distant land and plant a house. Instead, they learned that plots are limited, cluttered, and pre-determined.
It's not that I'm against my house being at risk in the lawless lands, but I'm not too happy about losing my items that were stored within the house, e.g., quest rewards / furniture etc.
Let's face it... people don't want to just sit on the porch all day fighting off kids. We want to be productive.

Then make sure you get a house in the most demanded safe areas quickly. Do you actually think theres going to be room for all 20,000 peoples houses on a server? 20,000 is a random guess at a single servers active playerbase., no one really knows, but it seems like an okay number to throw around just to shed some light on a situation.
If theres non-instanced housing in a game(which is what everyone always asks for) it's going to be limited to a certain number of people, unless the world was infinite like minecraft then it would be possible, but currently it's just not possible for MMOs.
If you want a house go for it, if you think slacking will get you more content then you are failing at mmo's.
I am not even interested in housing and stuffs like that, and If i iget a house i want to get it in the most hazardous place so we can actually engage in some PVP while defending it. not just sitting there wating for an eviction notice to pop.
I would die defending my crops and my cattle!
btw, archeage offers way more than that, how about becoming a pirate. then get a boat instead of a house!

SWG's housing worked - plenty of room for all.... enough for people to have several houses and plots.

Exactly, didn't get a safe house because youre slow? Oh well, get a house in an non-safe zone and defend it. Dont want to do that? Become a pirate, build yourself a boat and live on the water. Dont want to do that? Well apparently next patch they are adding some sort of water housing, so you can do that.

Yes. You could build anywhere on a planet. Literally anywhere. On any of the planets during Pre-CU. No restrictions besides having to be about 300m or so outside an NPC city.
Played: SWG, SWG:NGE, EQ2, Vanguard, LotRO, WoW, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Mortal Online, Rift, Guild Wars, Fallen Earth, EVE Online, Ryzom, Dungeons and Dragons Online, World of Tanks, Aion, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2

It does sound hard to believe, but it's true.
Not only were there plenty of planets, but each planet was absolutely gigantic. It made the typical "WoW World Zone" look like a 1-room dungeon.
It's this thread that has made me realise why MMOs have really declined so much as of late, it's not the companies, it's the overentitled carebear players.
"Waaaah, wahhhhhhh! It's no fun if people can take my stuff WAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"
There are a million games out there that cater to your kind, if you want everything to be risk-free and handed to you on a silver platter, play one of those. This looks like a game that actually encourages some degree of thought, some degree of risk/reward.
I can't wait to embark into the world of Archeage and eke out a living, fighting for a chance to build upon protected lands, or if I miss my chance, being forced to duke it out in the wild north where anything goes. It's exciting! It's so refreshing to see an MMO with mechanics that don't solely cater to the whining crybabies this thread appears to have attracted.
I work hard in real life, I'm not a hardcore PVPer, in fact, I don't PVP at all. But that doesn't make this any less exciting to me, if I have a house I'll know I earned it, who knows what possibilities that may entail, becoming a property baron and keeping stakes in highly sought-after plots of land, joining a guild and waging war against others for access to prime land, and this is all just in the housing system! One system among the many this game will be sporting upon release!
If you don't like the look of this, just get out, westernisation better not do anything to this, it's a game that finally caters to the crowd that wants something more from their game than mobs to kill and a crafting system. Some of us enjoy politics and such systems that other games in the genre just plain don't have. It's only as much of a "job" as you make it, just because these people in this particular case are having to camp for a piece of land doesn't mean it'll always be like that! The game has been out for a few weeks, people are going crazy over everything, when things settle down plots will be opening up left, right and centre.
Bring it on Archeage, deliver me an open, fun experience that rewards me for being a good player and not just for paying a sub fee.

Funny, fighting to stake your claim on a parcel of land sounds like a plus to me. And if all the good land is taken up after I have my first little settlement I'd be more than happy to have a hunting type operation along with a cabin in a snowy mountainous region. Didn't get the piece of land you wanted? Too bad, find something else or wait til someone doesn't pay his taxes then fight to the death when it becomes available as in the picture heh. Reminds me of early America where you ran around putting flags and such in the ground. Having land in dangerous territories sounds like a blast as well as your land isn't guaranteed by an invisible all powerful huggy-bear force. My 2c.

@Shadanwolf, yes he is right you know. This game is probably not for you and definitely not for me.
To all those gankers, slackers and lawless gangs out there: please, please play this game and do so for years to come. You deserve it.
I guess my question to the testers is is this game still solid if you don't give a crap about crafting, pets, gathering or housing? And why or why not?

Good, and I don't want to spend all my time in a SANDBOX full of people like you crying that they managed to lose their stuff due to their own incompetence, yet still crying as if it's the game's fault. I'm tired of "everybody wins" MMOs where people like you have a field day because you can build a house wherever you like and if someone ransacks it, it doesn't matter because you get to keep all your stuff because you're a special little snowflake and it would be SO unfair for there to have been any risk in doing so.
Right now I'm forced to play WoW as there's no sandbox that caters to my needs, but you don't hear me crying to Blizzard about wanting a more hardcore experience, no, I wait for games that deliver to my needs. Archeage FINALLY delivers upon that and now you people sit here saying that it's too much and you didn't expect to go into a SANDBOX and have to actually, you know, manage your character and your assets. What did you expect?
I don't grief, I don't even PVP, I'm civil to all those I meet, I always learn my class and strive to better myself, "my attitude" on here has nothing to do with what I'm like as a player, I'd wager the types of people like myself interested in this sort of mechanic are better players and people anyway, people who actually want to think for themselves and play in an MMO world and not just Barbie's dreamhouse where they occasionally sell a sword to someone. People who accept a challenge and can accept their own mistakes, people who can strive for perfection and don't moan that the game isn't giving them enough when it shouldn't be in the first place!
I'm incredibly irritated that an exciting story like the OPs comes along that demonstrates land in this game is ACTUALLY going to be worth something and everybody cries that they can't be a special little snowflake and build barbie's dreamhouse on a clifftop. Who in their right mind would have built housing in a dangerous area if you can just queeze yours in wherever you please? Nobody! It's risk/reward, and not just reward/reward like so many games do nowadays, it's exciting, it's different, and if you don't like it then I'm glad, I don't want this to turn into the next WoW where all the overentitled players end up becoming so vocal that the game itself just goes against everything the developers and the original fans wanted for their sake.

I like figting for my stuff! Am I wrong in thinking "MMO Socialism" is ruining most MMOs.
I like that fact some will not have some stuff, due to whatever reason.
You need to find a different game then.
This is upsetting. I was under the impressiont hat housing would be done much like it was in SWG.
So the plots are pre-determined and the land really isn't all that big?
That's not why they are upset. They are upset because they expected to have the ability to adventure to some distant land and plant a house. Instead, they learned that plots are limited, cluttered, and pre-determined.

If theres non-instanced housing in a game(which is what everyone always asks for) it's going to be limited to a certain number of people, unless the world was infinite like minecraft then it would be possible, but currently it's just not possible for MMOs.
I don't know why anyone is surprised.
I think, and that's just me...
I never played but youre telling me there was room for 20,000 non-instanced houses?
LMAO!!!
All Will Be Well.....
I really hope you have a fun time in Archeage, and that it absorbs all of your MMO time.
.... because I sure do not want to be in the same game as people with your attitude, and I will not be playing this kitty litter box of a game.
@Shadanwolf, yes he is right you know. This game is probably not for you and definitely not for me.
To all those gankers, slackers and lawless gangs out there: please, please play this game and do so for years to come. You deserve it.
Yinlor, if I ever run into you in the fabled Real Life, I'm buying you a beer. No joke. Absolute spot-on in your post, mirrors my feelings exactly. High effing five.
He's got a point if you ignore the delivery.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
