If you tried logging in right before your first post, you didn't get in because that's during Eve's downtime.  Otherwise I don't know what to do.

Well, diagnosis at a distance is never an easy task, but have you played other Online games? Did those work without a problem?

Also it would give a hint if you could remove the router and directly plug your computer to the internet - just long enough to see if you can connect then.

When you have a problem like this (be it software or hardware) its best to start by removing or disabling things see if they were the cause and then if not put them back online.

GL m8 in finding the problem.

about connecting the phone line directly to the dialup..i dont hav the program to dialup /.

You don't need a program for dialup. You just need the info you got from your ISP, when you got your internet access. Its usually a username, password, a number you have to dial (if its a phoneline) or an IP number (if its cable or DSL). That info is entered into the connection manager in windows and you are in (at least theoreticall :) ). If you have a familiy member or friend who is a bit into computers I would suggest you ask him/her to check this out, so your computer is not screwed up by your "experiments", since you maybe also need to change your computer's IP.

Also if other games work and EVE not then there seems to be another problem, since EVE does not need any special confguration or settings. But it could be that the router was configured for the other games, meanign the router "knows" them and allows a connection, and EVE not. The only thing that I can think of now is to make a traceroute to the EVE server and see if you can ping it, but I cant give you the IP since I am currently at work (maybe somebody else can?). Also this traceroute is a good info that you can sent to EVE support, to find out what may be the problem here.

Aside from that (make traceroute and/or ask a buddy) I can't say anything really constructive, sadly.

The only time this happened to me was a couple of days ago when I tried to start EVE at the same time as I was running Civ4.   Stopped at the same place you are describing.  If I was to try guessing what it is that is stopping you I would say bad GFX drivers or outdated gfx card...
  • hirofumihirofumi Member Posts: 8

i did update my ati card, i used a ati 9600 pro card and updated it wif the catalyst drivers that were linked from eve's webby, and regarding the traceroute thingy, i tried it too but i dont quite understand what it mean, though i did see some "ms" above 180 which i think the support mentioned that its bad.

However why its so laggy realli baffles me because..my router is currently being used be me alone via ethernet and i dont hav any downloads nor games on, online or offline.

izit because my router has spi firewall that i didnt disable?(dont noe how, but the last time i did was guided by the router company ages ago, i think he did it in telnet) or do i actually need to forward some ports, which sounds weird in this case..

  • marcuccimarcucci Member Posts: 6

Since you are the only one on your router could you remove it? Plug your internet cable directly into the computer instead of into the router. If your router is accessable via the web the interface is usually on http://192.168.0.1 or what ever IP address your router has. (If you are not sure about the IP address of your router open a command prompt and type ipconfig, it is the same as the default gateway.) Also look at your computer's security properties, do you have windows firewall on? I have found that it screws up a lot of stuff.

If you answer this stuff I may be able to help more:

What version of windows are you on? and service pack?
What make and model router do you have?
What is your high speed service? DSL? Cable?
How much RAM does your system have?

  • hirofumihirofumi Member Posts: 8
Ok firstly my windows firewall is off, i use windows XP Professional with Service pack 2, my model of router is the Alcatel SpeedTouch 570 and its a 1500kps internet, dsl or cable, i dont realli know and i hav 768mb of ram.

    http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/faqs.asp#routers

Near bottom is full info how to disable your router firewall. Try that if still probs then it is not the firewall.

If it works, then you know it IS the firewall. If that happens suggest you browse that site a bit more to find out how to open the required ports to allow the game access.

    Or something.

Actually that may not be your router, sorry only quickly read your post. Try it anyway if it doesn't work most routers have a config page (look in manual) that will allow you to access the routers firewall setting and disable.

  • marcuccimarcucci Member Posts: 6

I agree with DraigCoch, your system sounds fine as far as everything else goes.  I also found this page if it helps:

    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/SpeedTouch570v4.2/

If that doesn't work I'll look for port forwarding information for EVE on the forums.

  • hirofumihirofumi Member Posts: 8

Thanks guys..but it still didnt work, apparently the router firewall is for blocking hackers from pinging ur ip and hack/leech ur internet, but i disabled it and tried it on eve but still cant work.

As for the port forwarding, i tried it before, i did lots of ip lol, but ending up wif using my lan ip 192.168.1.23 and outside ip 0.0.0.0 with both inside and outside ports 26000, it still didnt work.

Now i retrace my steps, i tried to do tracert in cmd to the ip Eve gave once in an answer to a specific question and i found my connectivity to suck alot..i started to see over 200ms after awhile, and eventually most of them timed out at the last part. The big question is..i am running a 1500kps broadband and i am not downloading nor playing any other games but my bandwidth seems to get leeched or something..this kind of things never happened b4, all other online games work but this.

Seriously hope any1 can give me an answer ^^

  • marcuccimarcucci Member Posts: 6

Check out this site to see what your bandwidth is: http://www.dslreports.com/stest

As for the traceroute, here is what mine looks like:

    1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
    2 10 ms 8 ms 8 ms ***.***.***.*** < Blocked for security purposes
    3 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms ***.***.***.*** < Blocked for security purposes
    4 14 ms 10 ms 10 ms 10g-9-4-ar01.needham.ma.boston.comcast.net [68.87.144.157]
    5 11 ms 9 ms 9 ms 12.118.88.5
    6 19 ms 18 ms 23 ms tbr1-p012801.cb1ma.ip.att.net [12.123.40.210]
    7 17 ms 17 ms 17 ms 12.122.10.22
    8 15 ms 15 ms 15 ms 12.122.80.37
    9 17 ms 19 ms 19 ms att-gw.nyc.dtag.de [192.205.32.58]
    10 84 ms 82 ms 84 ms isp-linx-gw13-o.nmc-m.dtag.de [217.239.38.241]
    11 88 ms 83 ms 86 ms 62.153.203.190
    12 86 ms 84 ms 82 ms 157.157.62.10
    13 88 ms 89 ms 85 ms 157.157.139.252
    14 93 ms 88 ms 88 ms 157.157.139.10

So 200 ms shouldn't be that bad but timeouts are. The only port I saw open was 26000 so opening that port should have fixed it, however, as you can see I am running over a router with NAT and an SPI firewall and I have no problems even without opening ports. My router does support uPnP which basically automatically opens the ports but I am not sure if EVE even uses that.

One last thing you can try. Look for a place on the router config that says "DMZ", this opens all ports to a single IP address. Turn that on to your machine's IP and try to log into EVE. If that works then this is a port forwarding issue, if it doesn't then it most likely doesn't have to do with your router. MAKE SURE YOU TURN IT OFF THOUGH AFTER YOU TEST. This opens your computer to the internet and can be dangerous.

I don't really think the 200ms is an issue because EVE exchanges very little data with your machine, it's not like a FPS. Let's try that and see what happens.

If you are always getting timeouts on your tracert try a tracert to other addresses (like yahoo or google) and see what happens. If they timeout as well I would report this to your ISP. Also, try to execute a "ping -t" to the EVE servers and see how many packets you drop. If you are dropping alot that may be a problem as well.

Only because I ran into this just the other day, all of a sudden BitTorrent has been causing me to drop packets even after I shut it down due to the massive number of people trying to connect to your machine. If you use BitTorrent stop using it for a few days and see if the issue clears up.

    Sorry for the long post.

One correction....port 26000 is the port you connect to on EVE's server not the port they are trying to connect back to on your machine. It appears they use an incrementing port each time you try to connect, on my machine it started around 1696. Those are the ports you would need to open but since they are different each time you can't set up a rule on the router to open them.

So, any network experts want to comment here?? I know ports under 10,000 (or some number like that) are a different class, privileged ports I think, and they are handled differently by routers than the higher port numbers? Please someone correct me...

Thanks marcucci for the internet test link, well the results are pretty average for my internet speed

i did 3 tests on 3 different servers,

On Seattle, Usa i got a Downstream of 1471kbps or 183.8kb/s and a Upstream of 1356kbps or 32.3kb/s

    On Sf,Ca,Usa i got a Downstream of 1356kbps or 169.6kb/s and a Upstream of 212kbps or 26.5kb/s

On Los Angelas, Ca, Usa, i got a Downstream of 976kbps or 169.6kp/s and a Upstream of 85kbps or 10.6kb/s

My router has uPnP and its set to full by default.

For the tracert, i did it to 157.157.139.10 and here are my results

    1 <1ms <1ms <1ms 192.168.1.1

    2 10ms 9ms 9ms ***********

    3 8ms 9ms 11ms ***********

    4 9ms 8ms 8ms 202.166.126.42

    5 8ms 8ms 8ms 202.166.126.37

    6 44ms 8ms 8ms 203.208.145.125

    7 210ms 207ms 220ms 203.208.172.54  <- the high ms start here

    8 210ms 220ms 250ms 203.208.168.138

    9 * 224ms 229ms 203.208.173.198

    10 428ms 370ms 372ms isp-linx-gw13-o.nmc-m.dtag.de [217.239.38.241]

    11 381ms 365 ms 375ms 62.153.203.190

    12 374ms 375ms 365 ms 157.157.62.10

    13 369ms 363ms 363ms 157.157.139.252

    14 378ms * 376ms 157.157.139.10

This is what i see usually when i tracert to 157.157.139.10 which is eve's servers.

Regarding the DMZ thing, my router doesnt have it.

  • marcuccimarcucci Member Posts: 6

Well, looks like I have some bad news.  I did some research on that IP address (203.208.172.54) and it looks like it is owned by SingTel.  Then I did some research on them and I found a lot of posts online about their poor service.

It looks like a lot of people are having the problem you are having with a lot of different games.  I would report this problem to your ISP and see if they can help.  Basically demand they do something untill those tracert numbers come down.

    Check these links: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22203%2E208%2E172%2E54%22

Sorry we couldn't solve the problem.

You can download and run Microsoft Antispyware also. It finds a lot of things others don't and will go through your protocol handlers and check for hooks some spywares install.

Doesn't take long and may help.

  • hirofumihirofumi Member Posts: 8

Thanks guys for your help, especially marcucci, yeah my isp is Singtel and..apparently none other ISP are good either in singapore, basically there are 3, Singtel, Starhub and Pacific net, basically starhub sucks more than singtel in terms of internet connectivity and pacific net is just plain expensive.

well at least i got to know its my internet that is the problem..probably would try microsoft's antispyware and see if anything can be picked up..

Edit:i did a tracert to www.yahoo.com.sg (its my home country) and the results were good but i tried to tracert to www.yahoo.co.uk, which is basically yahoo hosted in uk which is also where Eve is being hosted and the results..totally sucked, i think it sucked more than when i try to tracert Eve lol. i did try other Uk websites like speedtouch.co.uk and apparently a pattern is emerging..i seem to be unable to connect to uk's servers..

Heh..now they say its something wrong with the Eve's server instead of my internet because they detected that my bandwidth was perfectly fine. But the weird thing is..not only eve i encountered lag problems, other games like the chinese jy online, they are quite laggy but at least its possible to login and do the daily stuffs...
