Yes I can understand how no sound could be quite distressing. A few question if I may to help facilitate an answer for you. Have you had sound on this computer before? If so did anything change on your system prior to losing sound? What kind of speakers do you use, digital or analog? And in device manager are there any unknown devices listed?

Your speakers could have died.  Alternatively, something could get muted in volume options.

I"m nearly positive it's some sort of driver issue, however, with Compaq's (and many other prebuilts) they can be pretty hard to narrow down because they tend to use proprietary or one-off components that aren't quite standard.

    What I would try first:
Uninstall every single audio driver, and remove the devices from the Windows Device Manager. Make sure all of them are gone.
Reboot, and see what Windows auto-detects for hardware
If that works, great, if not, start installing drivers. Make sure to uninstall a driver if it doesn't work before installing the next.

    Alternatively:
You could just get another sound output device. A USB Sound card is cheap, and will give you about the same sound as your built-in sound did before. Something like this is only $9, and may be worth it just to not have to hassle with the drivers.
