Worth starting with the starter kit?

I've never been a star wars fan.  I don't care for the movies, nor do i enjoy listening to the assclowns who proclaim the movies the greatest thing since breasts and remote controls.  However i'm always looking for a new mmo and i've heard good things about the crafting system.  I understand that a lot of the veterans are leaving because the game is changing so much;  but i'm asking from the stand point of a completely new player.  Is the new game gonna be worth trying out?

I think so :)  You'll be brand new to the game so you won't know it any differently.  However, there will be a free trial after the 15th so you can try before you buy :)

    Wait till the 15th.

I'm a cancelled former player and I'm planning to grab the trial to see what they've done to the game.

Not a flame or anything, but why, if you don't like the movies, would you want to play a game that is being restructured to be more like the movies than before? Also, if the SW fans annoy you...well, guess who is going to be playing the game? SW fans, generally.
Keeping those things in mind, I doubt it'd be as enjoyable for you as something with background material/ world concepts that you did like. I'm not a beta tester of the new system (I have played the old SWG, and agree that it wasn't very much like the movies), so take it with a grain of salt.

How much like the movies could the game possibly be?  I don't like the Final Fantasy universe but ffxi is my favorite mmo.  Hell, maybe the game will get me into the movies.  Frankly all i have found is crap since playing ffxi and eve and i'd be willing to try just about anything.  Teletubbies the mmo,  bring it on.  It's gotta be better than some of the crap that has been released lately.

Well when I started playing SWG I hadn't even watched any of the Star Wars movies, I think at the time I thought I wouldn't like them, heh.  Now I've watched them all and I enjoy them, and it's all thanks to SWG image

Maybe you'll like it then, heh. I guess it depends on what turned you off about the movies. I thought maybe you didn't like the SW universe in general, in which case it'd be hard to ignore in a game based on it. It's a good point though, if a game has good enough play, I imagine you could ignore what you considered to be annoying background stuff a lot more.
I'm taking the wait-and-see approach myself. The changes aren't in yet, and I don't know anyone who has tested them, so I'm going to have to see later if it's become a game that interests me (City of Villains is where I'm at now, and I'm enjoying it, if that's any indication of my tastes).
The old SWG is a game that I found quite boring, though the crafting was very detailed (too much for me, in fact). I'm not much of a crafter, though.
The Chronicles of Spellborn also seems intriguing, but it's not out yet. Ditto for Age of Conan and Hero's Journey. Our options are growing, but it's tough to pick the right ones, isn't it. Still, I have a soft spot for the whole Star Wars trip, so I may give it a try again.

They have just changed it to a left hold click fps effort with the intention of bringing in consol players (consol = younger, immature, short attention span). Combat isn't at all attractive and it seems like the devs have no intention of keeping/bringing skill into the game. SOE have a bad rep, and this is their latest attempt at trying to revive a broken/dead game. You mentioned the vets all leaving, you gotto take this into consideration. These are the die-hard guys who have hung on, and put in a lot of time and effort. Deciding to leave won't have been an easy decision. They have changed the game, which could have been for the better but it looks like the devs have put in 3 weeks work on it with long lunch breaks and early home times, paintshop ftw!

I would suggest waiting on the free trial so that you don't waste your good money.

First off. i am a long time player of SWG. I played SWG when it was Classic, when it was CU-ed, but since they have tried to make it a cheap imitation of a semi-twitch based system... i have put many hrs into the beta. At first it was really fun and neat. but, after a while and going up against some of the higher leveled npc's it gets frustraiting. FPS games are fun because you only have to click enough to kill someone/something close to your skill level. i think i have carpal tunnel syndrom now... and thats after 1 NPC..

this is just my opinion, take it for what it is worth. a little info from a current SWG player... well, current untill December 8th...

Since you will be a new player I'd simply recommend (like others) that you try the level 1-10 free trial.  That is assuming its made available as of the 15th.

Personally I really liked what I saw while testing the NGE (starter kit).  It definitly a better game, just debatable if its been made a better mmorpg.  It certainly felt more complete and fast paced, but that's probably because there has been a huge amount of content added alongside the FPS (type) combat.  Will be interesting how it will affect the economy though.

well, it has already hit the games economy hard. most of the big crafters are leaving or have left. they have stream lined crafting to make it "easier", but most of the crafters took pride in thier ability to craft even the most complex weaponry/armor/food/ect. instead of having to find loots that increase speed so that a crafter can experiment on damage, now its all damage. no calculating needed, if you have resources that are in the 900 range you can max out a weapon with little to no skill/food/clothing attachments...

    Short answer: No.
Especially if crafting was something that was drawing you to it, that's one of the things being damaged the most next week.

That and it continues to become less and less of an MMORPG and is instead becoming an RPG. They've been hemmoraging players badly since WoW came out. They've done 2 expansions, 2 movie release tie-ins and 2 complete game make overs in less than a year. Despite the huge volume of newbs those things have brought in, player numbers are down over 75% and continuing to free fall. The game is slated for shut-down in January, this is the developers last desperate gamble to get account #s up enough to keep their jobs.
