Being a fan of all things Startrek I'm sure I'll give it a try when it is released. Oh well I'll stick to my Play by e-mail role playing Trek games for now

Nope. I love Star Trek but I have never played any of the Star Trek line of games. They just aren't exciting to me. And I highly doubt ST:O will be any different. And Star Trek as an mmo by a company that to me doesn't seem to know what they are doing with something as detailed as Star Trek is a disaster waiting to happen.

I'm keeping an eye on it, but I too don't have a lot of faith in STO. Also don't hold your breath for a 2006 release i'm betting on 2008 based on what I have read about the development so far.
The official release date is for Q1 of Feb 07 they said it in an interview. I hope they take all the time they need man, I don't want them to screw this game up like all the other Star Trek games. And if yout hink it about it, converting Star Trek into an MMO is not easy they have many factors they need to weigh and things they need to discuss and decide on. Right now for instance there's a huge debate going on as to how space combat will be. The devs came out and said that it would be 2D, not 2D graphics, but basically you wouldn't be able to traverse 3 dimensions. Meaning you'll always be right side up when fighting, many argue that it will take realism out of the game, but others argue that during Star Trek you never saw two ships encounter one another with one inverted and the other one right side up. So now the devs must decide whether to remain true to canon or to remain true to the laws of physics....something tells me this is going to be a very interesting next two years ...

Ummm, you saw it plenty where they weren't perfectly side by side. You aren't going to see one upside down and the other right side up, its hollywood, what do you expect? However you see a ton of maneauvers and such that are deathly blows by ships in combat in the many flavors of Star Trek. I have no idea what the dev's are trying to claim other then they just don't want to have to do the work of 3d space and they want to cheapify and trivialize space flight and combat in the same spirit that SOE and LEC are claiming SWG players want faster combat. STO is not going to be a game for Star Trek fans, its going to be an MMO designed for MMO players and everyone that buys computer games.
As a matter of fact the dev team really hasn't done their homework. EVE handles 3d space just fine, yet they act like it has never been done or can't be done in an MMO. All EVE does to shore the ships back up after they maneuver is too flip them back over rightside so everything is "right side up" so its more appealing ot the eye. Like I said, it seems more to me that they just don't want the task of doing 3d space and not the fact that they are trying to be true to anything.
In several of the dev blogs I have read they have already taken the stance that they want it attractive to many different kinds of people, that right there was the ends of my hope that it will be a good production.

Well you have a point man. I play Eve Online almost religiously...lol...However, you need to understand that from their point of view, Eve Online is a ship controlled by one person. In Star Trek Online there will be many people working on this ship, not just the bridge crew commanding it. Yes they will be steering and so on and so forth, what they're trying to avoid with this 2D stuff is over glorifying the role of the helmsman in the battle. He'll be doing all these fancy manuevers and what will the tactical guy be doing? Pushing a button and firing phasers? What will the operations guy be doing? Pushing a button and scanning? What they want to do is make it so that instead of having a dogfight in space that largely depends on your helmsman's reflexes and skills, they want instead a crew effort to defeat their enemy. Just as in all the Star Trek Series', the crew always thought up clever ways to defeat an over powering enemy, such as creating a photonic shockwave to cripple 2 or more vessles when they're outnumbered. And that's done by launching a photon torpedo between 2 or more ships and then firing phasers at it to blow it up when it's right between them creating a shockwave that disables them both. Yes I know I'm a Star Trek nerd!!!!!!!! But you must understand that if you emply a 3D combat stance then the battle will just be out manuevering and firing of photons and phasers...essentially whoever has the fastest most manueverable ship will win. Now I'm with you on this, but I like to play Devil's Advocate. You have to understand the point from both sides before youc an take a side. They are both very valid points. I believe the best compromise is what you said....something like Eve.
I would presume the tactical guy would be targetting enemy ships systems and trying to attack key points of the ship along with the captain coordinating both their efforts for maximum effect. They all should be doing what their jobs are. Engineering should be working on maintaining sheilds and reactor efficency along with damage control as they takes hits. I don't see how your not seeing all this, the answers are all obvious.
They are going to ruin what should be one of the best aspects of ST:O. Thats capitol ship combat so its something more then "fire phasers" and "boom".
