Since the game must be compatible with the cheapest PS3, do you think we will see limits as to how far the game can go and what features it can implement over time?
I wouldn't worry about it. If anyone excels at getting the most out of dated hardware, it's the Japanese. Heck, you can still play FFXI on a PS2, and they still develop content for the game 10+ years later. Some believe that the game has been held back due to PS2 limitations but official claims have been made to the contrary.
Like neobahamut said, the PS3 users might have to settle for lower graphical quality, but that will likely be the only inhibiting factor.
The only limitation would be graphically. The PS3 is a HDD based system with the capcity and ability to install updates at any given time. The only limitations that the PS3 has is the HDD space and the graphs. I highly doubt this game will take up more than 28GB of HDD space. The lowest HDD PS3 ever released was a 40GB console. (32 usable).
Technology always limits what you can do. Even with pure PC games you have to balance graphic quality vs. performance, and consider the bandwidth and servers needed.
I think the real question is: Does PS3 limit so much that it would make this game different from pure PC MMOs? I think technologically, it won't. However that they have to make a game that can be controlled with a controller is a huge limitation when they design their gameplay.
It's quite possible they'll release a PS4 version of it once the new console matures, assuming the game doesn't flop again. Yoshida has touted that the graphics engine for FFXIV is highly scaleable and shouldn't be a colossal project to port it to PS4.

I doubt it will flop beacuse so much time they have worked on this game and make so much improvement even downgrade stuff to make sure game float better.
And yes ps4 should be easier port it in, even make you able to run full HD graphic or better maybe.
The coding for FFXIV is different than FFXI they made the graphics scalable which will help extend its lifetime on ps3. It is the systems memory that you will have to worry about.

It was well known that the PS2 limited SE's options for expansions with FFXI. They were limited by the system's memory based on the number of things that had to be stored all the time. This meant that there was a hard limit on the number of jobs and additional systems they could implement and things like that.
I imagine the same could be the case for FFXIV but it will be less of an issue as SE are better prepared for it this time and they can be a bit more flexible.
PS3 will not limit this game. The PS4 will just stay behind in graphical quality.
We have just learned that the PS4 is essentially a PC and that the transition from a PC game to a PS4 game is very easy. I am pretty sure that they will have no trouble moving the game to PS4, i bet they already have an Alpha running on a development system.

None really.
Its just that PS3 will get shittier graphix
Boycotting EA. Why? They suck, even moreso since 2008.

well ps3 is getting older but if very consern about the ps3 graphic ithink shouldent be a problem at all.
Beside ps4 is coming maybe next year and would be stupid if this game wont support ps4.
Ihavent try or FFXI on ps3 beacuse there no DVD game for it but ithink it might work x10 better then ps2.
just hope ps4 will be backwards compatible if not i wont buy it at all... Ps3 first version 40 ot 60 gb u could do backwards compatible.

LImit? FFXI has more expansions and content than alot of other mmos. It is still going for ten years.
If it ever limits arr after a few years they can just drop support for it up to a certain expansion.
If people haven't upgraded to something more powerful to play on by then,"Oh well".
