I asked my friend if I could borrow his account to test it out and it was possibly the biggest piece of crap out there. If you are looking for a good game but don't want to play monthly fees, your STILL looking in the wrong direction.
Total crap. ET for the Atari was better in the 80s then Guild Wars is now.
i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there
It is funny...give a hater an openning and they blindly run in flaming....
If the two yahoo's above read what the OP put, they requested actual reasons. But you were too blinded to even notice. Just another chance to shoot down a game...why are you guys even reading the Guild Wars threads....nothing better to do huh?
Anyways, I would highly recommend the game to people with a couple warnings. I you like to grind, spend time just maybe hoping to get uber gear, like to solo everything and not group, spawn camp, PK/Grief and play 10hrs a day then the game is not for you. If you enjoy a game where level does not matter, you can mix approx 150 skills per character, you can tolerate instanced missions, PvP at high level....then give Guild Wars a shot.
There are times you can grind in the game if you want, there is Uber gear to get, there are builds you can solo with or you can use henchies to make your group.....it's just that is not the point of the game. This is a CORPG, you have to have a competitive streak in you and you have to be willing to cooperate within a group. As usual there are pros and cons to the game (it is obviously not perfect)....get for yourself it is free to play. Put it away when you get bored...then bust it out when you feel like it.
Have fun playing your games, do let blind flamers make your decisions for you.

This game (in my opinion) is good if you are a casual player, love arena style pvp, don't mind a linear storyline.
If you are a hardcore player who needs lvls, lvls, lvls... not the game for you. If you are more interested in an open pvp game like Lineage 2 then Guildwars will dissapoint.
I love the graphics... don't mind too much the linear gameplay but it does get (for me) tiring if you are lvling additional characters up. I really like the arena pvp so for me that is a plus.
And no monthly fee so you can play it for a while, leave... play more.. leave etc.
I would say that it is worth the money to try it if you treat it more like a linear rpg with a lot of arena fights.

iam getting so tired of people asking other people if thye should buy a game or not... how could they ever know if u are going to like the game or not. mayby if u sad that u have been playing "SWG" (ect) then they might have an ide if this is a game for u... cuz every one likes different games.... all i got to say....
Guild Wars: Member guild "The Royal Phoenix Gaurd [RPG]" Silke J| LvL 20| Necro/Ele Onkel Varg| LvL 19| Monk/Ranger Barak J| LvL 12| Warrior/Ele Ce Nedras| LvL 9| Ranger/Monk
Read about what Guild Wars is and then answer the question youself.
Aside from your own preference of gaming their in no reason not to buy GWs... There has been little to no tech probelms, downtime, or longstanding bugs/imblances. It is impossible to ask another person if you will like a game and get a relevent answer.

then don't f*ckin read it! jesus christ i'm sick of people complaining about something that they can totally avoid reading! the thread title says it all, f*ckin morons.
maybe people like to hear what other people experienced in the game? especially other people who like mmos (i know gw is not a real mmo, but you get the idea - i hope). without a demo all you can go on is a few pictures. that really helps. is it really that hard to understand?
WoW is a real MMORPG but only in the meaning of the name. WoW is comparable to giving a bunch of toddlers weapons and letting them kill whoever they wish. So pretty much it's like a daycare with graphics. So please keep that sorry excuse for an MMORPG out of the Guild Wars section.
Guild Wars is everything that was advertised, a good game that doesn't charge you monthly fees, almost zero lag, plenty of opportunites to meet and make friends to play a game with. To see a reply like Ashkent and his explosive language skill just irks me to no end. Opinions that are shared is a freedom, and should be encouraged, however the use of totally useless curse words no matter how you censor it still shows the lack of intellegence. Accusations of "complainers" in your statement points right back at yourself, as you are in the full storm of typing a reply that does nothing but complain. Critics that are nothing more than sounding boards that tear people down while not providing a viable positive is just silly and begs the question of why you didn't take you're own advice?
Back to the topic at hand, if you like multi-play with single playability, swords and spells, a direction setting story line, and the ability to take out frustrations on a wide variety of beasties then I suggest you give Guild Wars a try.

How ironic, that I was thinking the same thing about GW since there is no skill need to play the game. Winning battles in the game is based on strategy, teamwork and dumb luck. Have you even played WoW by the way? The last time I check different servers for different types of play where as GW only appeals to one group narrowmind players who again, ironically bitch, moan and post topic that vote for more MMORPG elementals to put in GW when the lack the of these elementals made this a good in the first place.
But before you start bashing other MMORPG and riding the GW shaft, you might want to look at the hypocricy of your own board before calling the kettle black.

GW requires no skill? You must be joking...Yes, it demands a lot of teamwork, tactics and A LOT OF SKILL. Skilled players groups usually win although other people try to copy their builds. Luck factor exist like in all other games...But more skill you have luck is less important.

First off, you need to back up your claims with proof. That's makes a world of difference when making a claim. I know I can back up my claims.
For starters, the teams and areas you fight in are SELECTED AT RANDOM so you can't pre-plan or switch out your special moves or spells to counter the other team's and vice versa. There is no class balance since some class have a bigger advantage over other classes. The idea is to simply cross-class until you are able to find a class combination that allows you to exploit certain abilities. You rely HEAVILY on teamwork and strategy to pull through a fight.
If this game requires skill, why are not able to switch skill during battle. You enter the with only ONE ways of fighting, disabling you from adapting a NEW STRATEGY if your first one falls. How are you skilled when in this situation if can't change your tactics? You're basically being forced to play a single pattern, which makes your motivates predicts and your weakness exploited.
Not to mention, you go into the fight blind because you have no freedom to choose whom you fight in this game when in fights that involve skill, you have every tactic available to you use as you please and each class has an advantage against the other without having to cross.
GW is a pvp-based DnD game. Teamwork, strategy and dumb luck are what pulled you through GW, which is the same exact formula DnD goes by. In DnD, you "live and die" based on the dumb luck of a RANDOM and in GW you live and die based on the dumb of a RANDOM selected opposing team. (Keyword here folks is Random.)
Again, with thousands of teams in guilds in GW, more than half of them aren't good pvpers or can't cooperate meaning 6 times out of 10 you're fighting an inferior team or mixed-experienced group. Now add another point to that, if that team has a team build that is inferior to your own.
Before I left Guild Wars, I was on a 600th ranked team who concidently beat two teams in rank 90 and 72. (Ironically, the night before my guild and I had been beaten by a team in rank 652.) I stopped play GW after beating those teams because that experience told me GW was nothing more than a rat race where even a toddler can get lucky and beat your team if he has a good build. There balance or no way to distinct against a good player/team vs. a bad player/team.
ANet, who even comfirms this on their site, says the game doesn't require hours of gameplay to learn how to play GW. The VERY THING that separate the skill players from the bad players was the time devoted to practicing on skills, exploiting player abilities and searching for high end equipment to imbalance the odds of winning for the opposing team. PvE is a waste of time since it doesn't improve their PvP skills and the lack of good high end equipment has ironically lead to the high rate of mixed groups and complaints about bad experiences involving teamwork in TPK.
So I ask you and anyone who wants to claim this game has skill where does skill comes in? Where is the distinction, the skill margin gap that separates good players/teams from bad players/teams? Because obviously the GW personal ranking system means nothing since not all skilled players prefer play TPK, which, by the way, is filled with mixed-experienced groups and requires "YOU" to join a TEAM to raise your own personal rank if "I" win TEAM battles. (Oh the irony.)
I had 20 points of fame and no personal rank, yet I earn the respect of players in guilds high up than my second to last guild. (The other groups high up said I was the best mesmer and player of my guild.) How can you claim there is skill in this game if can't even properly identify?
First off, you need to back up your claims with proof. That's makes a world of difference when making a claim. I know I can back up my claims.
Sure. Here we go.
For starters, the teams and areas you fight in are SELECTED AT RANDOM so you can't pre-plan or switch out your special moves or spells to counter the other team's and vice versa. Random team arenas is not real PvP of Guildwars or it's not supposed to be the place where high-end PvP goes. And it calls RANDOM arenas. So don't expect balance here.
Limited skills choise is meant for balance. Do you want to make all-class shutdown mesmer with all the skills? And your understanding of skill definition is wrong. I'll give you a hint from the dictionary:
Skill. Proficiency, facility, or dexterity that is acquired or developed through training or experience.
And I give you a practical example for your better understanding. I am a prot monk in my guild. I've playded a lot and my skills have come time by time. Actually, I even can compare my skills 2 months or more ago with current situation and I realize that I sucked. When we fight against other opponent I usually do an evalutation of the opposing team. Depending on their build I choose what skills and when to cast, what position to take (Oh, didn't you know how is important positioning in GW, actually top guilds like ZPZG or Te are winning with this only with 2 monks) and try not to overuse my skills for my energy managmet. You see, I change my strategy and tactics during the game. And it requires dexterity. I mean a lot of it. When we facing top50 spike guilds which can drop target faster than 0.5 seconds, believe me you have to react fast. All the atributes (proficiency, facility, dexterity) are here and it is the skill. So if you still think that there is no skill then something is wrong with you.
Not to mention, you go into the fight blind because you have no freedom to choose whom you fight in this game when in fights that involve skill, you have every tactic available to you use as you please and each class has an advantage against the other without having to cross.

In GvG and Tombs it's 8vs8. You know it, right? Well balanced groups of eight people bring as much counters as they can or trying to drop dengerous targets first if they have high damage output. As a prot I even have to counter the counters (hex, condition removal) in my team as well. So when top guilds are facing the main factors is teamplay, tactics and the skill. Of course when mediocore/noob teams fight, luck factor is more involved, because they usually don't know what they are doing

Actually once I was in the guild ranked 22 and honestly, they sucked. Their rank dropped after they had met good guilds. So your wins didn't mean anything. Yes, a good build is important, but I have seen many times how mediocore players are trying to copy builds of good guilds and they loose anyway. That's why so few of guilds running 2 monks pressure builds, because it requires so much skill. And can you explain EP dominance it the last ladder season or impressive Te perfomance nowadays? Well, a bunch of guilds and people which are always on top are very very lucky I guess....
ANet, who even comfirms this on their site, says the game doesn't require hours of gameplay to learn how to play GW. Man, you really have problems with definitions. Yes, skills are gained through training or experience. Yes, it takes time. It's funny, when you are saying what GW requires no skill, but in the other hand teling "The VERY THING that separate the skill players from the bad players was the time devoted to practicing on skills" and yes, this is true. If you learn something it doesn't mean you are very skilled or have better skills than others. I can learn how to play basketball in one month time, but I won't be able to play in the NBA. Guess why? Same here. Maybe GW is easy to learn, but it's hard to master.
So I ask you and anyone who wants to claim this game has skill where does skill comes in? Where is the distinction, the skill margin gap that separates good players/teams from bad players/teams? Well, I doubt if you were good with 20 fame, 600th ranked guild and with a such wrong understating of the game. But if you say that, so what makes you the best mesmer and player of your guild? Maybe your voice was sexy in TS or you was a nice person and everyone liked you? Hmm...but you had no skill anyway as you say GW requires no skil

This paragraph made no sense whats so ever. The wording in this sentence completely threw me off too to much paraphrase it. Let me recap what I said. You cannot your personal rank unless you do TPK. Tombs is a team pvp based arena and full of mixed-experience groups.
If you didnt notice the sarcasm in my post, I was saying why I have to do a team pvp to raise my personal rank. How the group performs doesnt reflect on my skill. You put one of the players from the top 20 guild in a team of unskilled player and he cant lead the victory.
Second, I noted expertise in using a mesmer because other groups praised my skills to me or my teammates who in turn relay their message onto me. This was all said to me before I got into my last group. My second to last group was a 800 something rank and the other teams higher up on the ranking scale were wondering why I was on that team.
Third, I didnt have a microphone for teamspeak. I typed my messages out and I hardly said anything. The only thing I did was act as the voice of reason when we were fighting uncoordinated.
And finally, you still havent my question. I asked, since YOU CLAIMED that this game requires skill that what is the distinction in this game that lets players know who is skilled and who isnt because TPK is faulty as I noted above since team effort doesnt reflect on PERSONAL skill and TPK is full of mixed-experience groups. Mixed-experience groups meaning half the teammates are unskilled and the other half are skilled.
To give an idea of what Im talking about. When doing Tombs with a pick-up group. 5 of us, including myself were good players, but the other three, an elementalist, warrior and ranger, did not know how to coordinate, rushed and went after the wrong people. That is an example of a mixed group. Ive either been in a mixed-experience group or fought against them. I dont know if you heard this, but a lot players, including fans of GW will tell that TPK isnt place of skill for three reasons: Randomly selected teams, narrow minded-players reject certain classes or certain builds and you can easily jump a team while they are fighting another group while in Burial grounds. (Or other multi-group arenas)
Even the most inexperience group can accomplish jumping another team. I had that happen several time when we were up against two Korean teams. Our green team waited out the yellow and blue korean team until they finish, just to be fair. Yellow team retreat and we decided to fight the blue team when they recover. We fought, we had the edge, but yellow came up from behind and try to take us both out. The result was that our green team got wiped out and blue made a narrow recovery and beat the yellow team.
Actually once I was in the guild ranked 22 and honestly, they sucked. Their rank dropped after they had met good guilds. So your wins didn't mean anything.

RANDOM SELECTED FIGHTS. You dont pick what teams you fight, they are automatically done so youre more likely to run into an inferior team or mixed-experience team. As I said, increase that opposing teams chance of losing if their build is inferior to the other teams. Thats probably why they and your team were up there. That's most likely why a lot teams stay up in the guild ranks for a while.
Here you arguing that there is skill in the game, yet you admit your team sucked and they were ranked 22. This should have made you question whether or not the other teams you fought were any good at all. This is what my post was talking about. How you can say this game requires skill when the majority of victories and rise in guild ranks are the result of players fighting inferior guilds/mixed-experienced group and their faulty builds. The fights are unfair from the start since you cant select your opponents.
Had ANet not based the guild ranking system on the number of wins, but rather the groups win over a higher ranked group in the ladder then it would be easier to distinct. Personal rank should be based on the number of player kills and deaths at the end of each match. Finally, they should implement a system that allows you to see the persons personal rank.
In GvG and Tombs it's 8vs8. You know it, right? Well balanced groups of eight people bring as much counters as they can or trying to drop dengerous targets first if they have high damage output.

I hate to break this to you, smartass, but PvE arenas, GvG, TPK, competition arena and team arena ALL RANDOMLY SELECT your opponents and the areas you fight in. Again, you have no say in who you fight so may be pit up against a team who has a build that can destroy your build. There is no balance in this game since you go into the fight blind. It all depends on dumbluck to win a battle; winning is the result of going up against an inferior team and the wrong build or moves.
For example, lets say I was in an 8 player spike group in TPK, what are the chances of me running into a team spirit group? (Before the nerf) Or if we were a diverse group, what are the chances of us running into Healing Ball group? And if Im an inferior player on inferior team, what are the chances that my team and I will fight against a team of our level gameplay? Again, by your analogy, if skill existed in guild wars, why has ANet created anyway to stop results of these types of mishaps form happening?
Depending on their build I choose what skills and when to cast,
Thats not showing of skills because your build can be good, but as I mentioned earlier, all of the arenas select your opposing team that you have to face. Again, what are the chances that your monk will face a mesmer in the next battle? It doesnt matter if you change STRATEGIES or not, if youre a monk going up against a mesmer, youre toast. What class you choose and what class you end up facing is the real thing that decides whether you win or not. Skill is not involved.
what position to take
Positions are exploits, not strategy. Even an unskilled can take advantage of positions if you tell him where to stand. Just telling a kid the codes to a console game, will that kid increase his chance of beating that game with no practice. The reason why the mesmer is better than the ranger is because the mesmer can use skills through walls and a ranger cant.
This paragraph made no sense whats so ever. The wording in this sentence completely threw me off too to much paraphrase it. Let me recap what I said. You cannot your personal rank unless you do TPK. Tombs is a team pvp based arena and full of mixed-experience groups.

Of course, if you are playing with noobs you can't win no matter how good you are. Guildwars based on the teamplay, but skill of each party member matters anyway.
Second, I noted expertise in using a mesmer because other groups praised my skills to me or my teammates who in turn relay their message onto me. This was all said to me before I got into my last group. My second to last group was a 800 something rank and the other teams higher up on the ranking scale were wondering why I was on that team.

So what? If you fight in groups with no skill (noobs) you say that game requires no skill?
And finally, you still havent my question. I asked, since YOU CLAIMED that this game requires skill that what is the distinction in this game that lets players know who is skilled and who isnt because TPK is faulty as I noted above since team effort doesnt reflect on PERSONAL skill and TPK is full of mixed-experience groups. Read this again and buy English dictionary with skill defintion:
Skill. Proficiency, facility, or dexterity that is acquired or developed through training or experience.

About the tombs...If want to win it and hold Hall of Heros all party members of yours have to be coordinated and SKILLED. After 1 run good players usually can see what is not working. To hold hall requires a lot of skill, teamwork, coordination. If one of your members not doing his job you'll loose. But I assume you've never even reached Hall of Heros and you have no clue what I am talking about.
To give an idea of what Im talking about. Don't take noobs in your group. Yes, i know with 20 fame is hard to find a good group. TPK is different concpet than GvG, requires differet builds, skills, tactics. If you win GvG it's doesn't mean you win Halls, but good guilds can adjust and play it for fun. I've seen it many times.
Even the most inexperience group can accomplish jumping another team. I had that happen several time when we were up against two Korean teams. There is only 1vs1 in multi-group arenas atm. You can face max 2 teams in altar maps. I assume you've played guildwars a long time ago
Actually once I was in the guild ranked 22 and honestly, they sucked. Their rank dropped after they had met good guilds. So your wins didn't mean anything.
So you are agreeing there is no distinction in this game to who is skilled, am I right?
It was ladder reset. They had some wins againts noob no skilled guilds. Their ranked droped after facing good guilds. If you don't see distinction then you are blind. Look at the last season top 20 or 50 of the ladder and current. A lot of guilds are same or just same people formed new guilds. I know it, because I play with them.
Yes, a good build is important, but I have seen many times how mediocore players are trying to copy builds of good guilds and they loose anyway. That's why so few of guilds running 2 monks pressure builds, because it requires so much skill.

You can do arranged guild battle, didn't you know that? Tell this to top ranked guilds, they will laugh at you. Read this again:

If you win against higher ranked guild, your rank raises MUCH higher than ordinary win. Don't you know that as well? Don't care about personal rank when good guilds usually know each other.
Repeat. Good guilds often do arranged guild battles. Read above about counters.
Man, you really don't know what's happening in the current metagame. Yes, Anet tries to balance the game to be more skill and creativity involved.
LOL. That really shows your knowledge of the game...Have your ever heard about hex removals? Hmm, probably not...
Haha, this is really funny. You can't even understand this correctly. I am running aroud the traps against trapper team, omg I hack! My team uses WaF in guild battle and I am using it as advantage against warriors, omg I use exploits...
You are just mediocore/noob player who failed at higher stage of PvP. Your dumb theory is just an excuse for your failure.
Oh God, don't get CaptainRPG started please. Once he gets going he doesn't know when to shutup. He has so many problems with this game but he still manages to show up whenever someone likes the game and makes that person feel like an idiot for liking it.
And yes I have played WoW. And in every server I'm in there's a buncha of bratty little kids talking in 1337 and calling you a n00b each time you ask for a little assistance.
And what's worse, I actually joined the trial recently. There's a 10 day trial at Fileplanet just in case you guys don't know. I spent 30 minutes in line at Fileplanet, then I spent the next three hours downloading the game, then the next 20 MINUTES INSTALLING IT. So I go to the website to enter in my trial key and do you know what it asks for? MY FUCKING CREDIT CARD!! It says it needs it for verification purposes only which is complete and utter bullshit.
I spent nearly 4 hours getting that game on my computer and installed only to find out that I need a credit card that I don't have just to play the bloody trial! I was going to give the game a second chance, or maybe even take a lot of shots of those little asshole members I've been talking about to prove to everyone that WoW is indeed full of whiny little brats.
The only reason why Blizzard wants your credit card for the trial is because it's the fastest way to leech you dry if you decide to keep playing. Instead, they aren't NEARLY smart enough to guess that most of the people who want to do the trial are people who just wan t to see what all the fuss is about and don't actually HAVE a credit card.
From this previous experience, and the fact that I tried to give WoW a second chance, I have surmised that the WoW staff is full of a bunch of money grubbing idiots. With that thought in mind, I'm not going to give WoW another chance until the staff decides that it's players and potential players are more important then the players credit card numbers.

errr. i'd be willing to bet more people have credit cards than don't. why not get one? if you don't want to use it, don't. but it would come in handy for times like this, huh?
I voted yes cus my friend said that the graphics are good (And they are) and that u can like hire mercenaries to help u fight and everything. the game seems kinda cool. one downpoint is that u have to pay monthly fees for it
Why you ask hmmmmm, Well you can have a hella lota fun :P and if you dont have a credit card or to scared to put it online.
I like it cause theres so much skills you could make your person well like anything, anykind of archer warrior spellcaster necromancer healer or a illusionist (forget what its called) but its awsome in my opinion
downside well it sucks startin off :P like all games but ive wasted lots of my time but its worth it well im going to go now and play it, AND NO MONTHLY COSTS!!!
Guild Wars is a team/competitive game. Your team-making and strategy are as important as your skill. At least in Guild Wars there isn't that 1337 weapon or SoJ that everyone is hunting down.

NO
This game is the suckage. If u wanna try a real MMORPG play WOW, Lineage2, D&L or EQ
I agree with the guy above me.
"It is easier to be cruel than wise. The road to wisdom is long and difficult... so most people just turn out to be assholes" Feng (Christopher Walken)
Well, I personally like the game a lot.
It does have downsides however...

If you want to waist you time, play GW. Not to be harsh or anything, but, GW really isnt a good MMO at all, what so ever...
If you want my opinion, play EQ2.
I dunno but I think you should have to suffer some horrible torture for trying to be cutesy with the topic like that.
Nothing personal ofcourse!

ITs ok guys, I already got the game.
GW requires no skill? You must be joking...Yes, it demands a lot of teamwork, tactics and A LOT OF SKILL. Skilled players groups usually win although other people try to copy their builds. Luck factor exist like in all other games...But more skill you have luck is less important.
So you are agreeing there is no distinction in this game to who is skilled, am I right?
Yes, a good build is important, but I have seen many times how mediocore players are trying to copy builds of good guilds and they loose anyway. That's why so few of guilds running 2 monks pressure builds, because it requires so much skill.
And can you explain EP dominance it the last ladder season or impressive Te perfomance nowadays? Well, a bunch of guilds and people which are always on top are very very lucky I guess....
Random team arenas is not real PvP of Guildwars or it's not supposed to be the place where high-end PvP goes. And it calls RANDOM arenas. So don't expect balance here.
Depending on their build I choose what skills and when to cast,
Thats not showing of skills because your build can be good, but as I mentioned earlier, all of the arenas select your opposing team that you have to face. Again, what are the chances that your monk will face a mesmer in the next battle? It doesnt matter if you change STRATEGIES or not, if youre a monk going up against a mesmer, youre toast. what position to take
Positions are exploits, not strategy. Even an unskilled can take advantage of positions if you tell him where to stand. Just telling a kid the codes to a console game, will that kid increase his chance of beating that game with no practice.
