wow this is hard

i just played the WoW trial with a human paladin. i just finished my first quest, and i like it but i'm also subscribed to EQ2. i just have some questions about WoW:

i'm playing a human paladin, does the combat get any faster like EQ2's?
is there player housing like EQ2?
are the dungeons big and interactive like EQ2's?
is there zoning in WoW like EQ2?
would you say WoW is more casual than EQ2? i need casual gaming as i'm a college student.

i'll come up with more questions later. i must say i do like WoW's polished look and the style is hot. and its cool that game time follows real life time.

but then i also like EQ2's nice graphics, and the quests seemed more deeper and complex.

god damn choices. lol. of couse i could always subscribe to both, but then once the NGE for star wars galaxies comes out, and if that trial is good, i'm going to have a harder time deciding...

just leave it to WoW and EQ2 for now. thanks.

paladin in wow is probably the most boring class to play now. they are getting changes in next patch but who knows if its going to make a difference.

    no player housing

    most instances are large.

wow is the most casual mmorpg out there, at least until you hit max lvl.

there is no zoning at all except for the big dungeons/instances.

i found the quests in eq2 to be really boring and just go kill x number of mobs for every quest. wow has these too, but there seems to be more story behind them or it seems like you are doing them for a reason, not to just kill x # of mobs and thats it.

i hace a level 16 predator in EQ2 shooting for ranger. what would you suggest i play for WoW?

  • AshkentAshkent Member Posts: 772

the hunter is probably the closest thing to a ranger, uses a bow or gun and can use melee weapons. you also get to tame pets to help you fight. they're pretty good at soloing.

druids are fun, plus they recently got changed to buff them up. my main character was a 60 druid. they can heal, tank, go stealth, cast damage spells, change into different animals - bears, cats, sea lions. very versatile. druids can solo well too.

I have a level 41 Dwarf Paladin in WoW and a level 31 Barbarian Templar in EQ2.
I personaly feel that the combat in EQ2 is more versatile and involving than WoW but there isn't much between them to be honest.

    No housing in WoW.
I wouldn't be suprised if they introduce player housing though if/when the active subs start to drop off. It is allways a popular feature and would get ex players to come back for another look.

Little to no zoneing in WoW.
This for me highlights the difference between good and bad programing. Whoever it is at SOE that thinks cross city travel in EQ2 is OK, is precisely the person they need to get rid of ::::12::

I doubt that anyone will say EQ2 is more casual than WoW.
The complete lack of any death penalty and the double exp points for logging out in a city make WoW the tenderest MMORPG on the market.
Also makes the entire game totaly pointless in my opinion but Ho-Hum ::::15::

"God damn choices" ? - I know what you mean ::::02::
They are both good fun and well worth the asking price so don't worry about making a mistake ::::20::

  • crizleecrizlee Member Posts: 61

which one was more fun for you nullapax? oh and, is there lots of armor variations and unique armors? more than EQ2?

  • NullapaxNullapax Member Posts: 401

More fun ? - very hard to answer that,

As to the armour question there are plenty of different types and the vast majority of them can be enchanted by player crafters so you can tweak your outfit to suit yourself to a greater degree than in EQ2 but still not as much as some other games.
There are armour sets as well like in D2 if you played that. The more items of a set you have the more bonuses they give.
Plus you can customise the way you look with shirts and Guild tabards so you don't have to look the same as everyone else of your class/level.

    Back to the most fun,
I think I have to say that WoW makes me smile a lot more than EQ2.
It takes itself less seriously and seems far more geard towards providing entertainment rather than providing a challenge.

Then again I like a challenge.
For me nothing beats that feeling when you walk ( run ::::15:: ) away after a fight knowing that you really should have died but you just managed to pull it off. I get that a lot more in EQ2 than in WoW.

I've probably only confused you more now, sorry ::::31::

Having played both I have to say that playing WoW as compared to EQ2 is like:

Reading A Fantasy Comic Book (WOW) vs. Reading a really good Fantasy Triology (EQ2)

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
    Sig image Pending
    Still in: A couple Betas

    lol

more like wow is the fantasy novel and eq2 is Learn to knit Animal Costumes: The ultimate compendium or some huge obscure technical manual.

eq2 has double exp to...5% of your bar every hour if your playing or not gets added so its not much different there from what i can see (if that made any sense::::12::). also the combat in wow is very fast paced but not very challenging and requires little skill...witch could be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

with that being said i quit wow, tried daoc quit that to and now im playing eq2 and very happy with it so far. but you are right, you cant really go wrong with either of these games... they are both really good imo.

ok i'm having a hard time deciding what class to play. i've already decided night elf since they're look so sleek and they're starting level isnt boring. now i've played hunter, druid, rogue, and warrior. i cant decide which one.

i want cool looking armor(plate maybe or chain?) and fast attacks with a sword.

  • JenuvielJenuviel Member Posts: 960

Really, there's great-looking armor of all types. As far as chain or plate, I believe hunters and warriors are the only classes of those you listed with access to either. It's been awhile, but I think hunters get chain at 30, whereas warriors get plate at 30. Both look good, so it's really a playstyle decision more than anything. My advice is to play both up until level 10, or a little past that, and get their class skills (pets for the hunter, one of the stances for warrior). That'll give you a better idea of what they're like to play.

Of those two classes, my experience (about five months ago, so the game may have changed some) was that hunters were much easier to solo, but much less desired in groups for pretty much anywhere other than some outdoor raids and Molten Core. Warriors were harder to solo, but almost always could find a place in a group. I really preferred the playstyle of hunters up until 60, but the pets really don't scale well once you get up to the big instances, even with specialized beast mastery.

    warriors - plate at 40

paladin - not 100% sure but i think they get plate at 40 also

    hunters - chain at 40

    shaman - chain at 40

okay, i have a level 38 Night Elf hunter, i quit WoW against my will, my good comp crashed so i had no choice. Hunters are amazing soloists, i have a big a$$ gorilla that runs ahead, takes the hits. i sit back launching shells at the enemy and healing my pet, lol i'm pretty invincible. i can King bangalash, level 40 (maybe 43 not sure, been a while) elite, meaning it should take 2 level 43s to defeat him. i liked the artsy style of WoW but after a while the lack of depth in combat and the lag in big cities can get tiring. a major bonus was the items, it has far more items than any other game i've seen, you could line up 15 level 40 mages and none of them would look exactly the same. anyways, back to hunters. i love the fact that you can solo, i'm a big solo fan so it could just be me. hunters are great to have for soloing and questing, in max level instances and such they are some what frowned upon because they have no real special ability. like Rogues stealth and huge damage, mages huge damage, warriors can take anything thrown at them. paldadins can take even more thrown at them >.<.  druids can do everything, so if you like grouping and instancing go for the warrior i'd say.

overall i'd give WoW an 8.5/10 - great story, great quest system, tons of items. max level can get boring because you dont have much to shoot for.

First off, don't judge the entire game based on your first quest, I'm assuming it was in northshire abbey area, hey I know a lot about wow having played it since Feb this year, only to quit now.

Paladins combat is one of the most boring, it doesn't change as you get higher up, you can almost sit back with one button pressing while the computer auto attacks for you.

No player housing in WoW at all.

Dungeons, yer there are dungeons and just like EQ2 they are all instanced, really shitty and boring, but massive and can take anywhere up to 4hrs+ to complete in some cases, casual it is not, the fastest one I ever did was maybe a 1 hr run to complete one of the lesser ones.

Zones, no, unless you count the one going from one side of the map to the other, and this can be kinda dodgey depending on how stable the servers are "which is hardly ever on the EU side of it" as you get dropped in the water and drown half way across.

Is it more casual than EQ2? hmm I played both and would say WoW is much like wow in terms of questing to lvl, its only when you hit the instances and need the groups that it becomes a bore, then again thats much like EQ2 aswell, once you hit lvl 60 in WoW the game changes bigtime, you need a group for everything and anything and if you want to advance seriously in terms of epic shite weps etc, then you need to be in a BIG guild doing MC runs, which can take upwards of 4hrs a night doing those.

Its not a casual gamers game at lvl 60, trust me.

Oh btw, if you like PvP in a game, well not sure why you are playing EQ2, god forbid you think WoW will give you PvP, watch the NGE closely for this element or just take a look at Dark and Light coming this month for PvP kicks.

Q: i'm playing a human paladin, does the combat get any faster like EQ2's?
A: Combat isn't as good as EQ2's but it's faster depending on what class you play. Druids,Priests and Paladins tend to be slow but survival classes.

Q: is there player housing like EQ2?
    A: No

Q: are the dungeons big and interactive like EQ2's?
A: Yes there are raids and kool stuff but not interactive like EQ2's use of Direct x9c.

Q: is there zoning in WoW like EQ2?
A: Only to instances and once when you switch islands

Q: would you say WoW is more casual than EQ2? i need casual gaming as i'm a college student.
A: It depends, EQ2 is a real time sink and so is WOW! If you want to solo your way to level 60 then WOW is alot quicker.

wow is for the casual player. you can get to 60 by soloing. after that its not for the casual player.

things are changing dude, get used to it.

Solo and Casuals are not similar in any way.  A lot of casuals are soloers.  But I know a lot of casuals who are raiders.

Your mentality is flawed.  Solo is a Gameplay.  Raiding is a Gameplay.  Casuals is a dedication to a gameplay.  Someone can be a casual soloer and a hardcore raider (IE most crew of Afterlife & sons).  Someone can be a hardcore soloer and not a raider at all.

Confusing gameplays and dedication to a gameplay is typically elitist.  A soloer like me is thousand time more hardcore than most members of an Uberguild as they can't do what I do despite having better gear, as far as solo is concerned...and you don't even consider me as a grouper yet, I am mostly a grouper!  image

Casuals are a big part of the MMOs, saddly soloing is still needing a LOT of room.

let me reword it then, when you can get to max level without having to dedicate 8 hours a day to the game, then its pretty casual friendly. i got to 60 in about 6 months and only played about 3 hours a day the whole time. in other games if i played that much, it would take me much much longer to get to max level.

either way you say it, wow is great for the casual gamer from 1-60. post 60 it is not. wow was even designed to be played casually originally.

newer games, like Age of Conan, has been described by its devs as for the casual player.

hm so i after leveling my hunter to level 7 i find the gameplay to transition smoothly from quest to quest. time flys as i play this game, its wierd. i like this game its much more fun. and its beautiful

  • NullapaxNullapax Member Posts: 401

I told you they were both good ::::02::

My advice now then is to play WoW until it starts to feel a bit too easy.
Then re-sub to EQ2 and enjoy the superior graphics and deeper gameplay.

What you must never do is become a Fanboi and start lecturing everyone that your favourite game is the best and that everyone else is an idiot for disagreeing.

    As I say far too often - - - Enjoy ::::20::
