I have been an avid hater of WOW. I played the Granddad of them all UO, and I played many more. I did my best to avoid the evil WOW! I posted about a month ago about this game and it's community. I thought the game was pretty good but I claimed the community was bad. It has been about a month now and I am about to sub a second account for my daughter. I was left high and dry by NCSoft with City of Heroes, but this game has filled the void. I know a lot of WOW vets are probably not happy with some of the apparent changes from the start of the game and I know how you feel. I played SWG through their crap. I just know that the community has been awesome and teh graphics and diversity of all the lands are simply awesome. I am sure I will get flamed for this post by ex-WOW players and other WOW haters like I was, but this game is really beautiful and I am glad to become a (10 years late) member.

What you're saying is that an invidual's enjoyment of a given title is not correlated to external affirmation?
But but but, you just wrecked the whole justification for that Hype Meter on the front page!!Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Yes you can!!!

MMORPG "veterans" talk about combat mechanics, PVP balance, ways to influence the world, sandbox features at length... And all that is wonderful, but nothing beats solid implementation and a well-designed gameworld. WOW has both and if as an MMORPG player you haven't played WOW at all, well, I'd say it's just a pity. There's a lot of stuff to like and different players can find different bits of stuff to like.
For example, I love the fishing sub-game, and I just love Outland. Yep. A whole realm! The visual design, the music, the creatures, the lore... If it made any sense at all, I'd try and form an exclusively Outland guild and just hole in there!
ALL things considerd there's not a better all around MMO out there and the sub numbers prove it. Of all the games I have critical comments on I have never ever had even one for Wow.
I simply dont play anymore and have found other MMO's with certain niche aspects that I enjoy more than wow but again nothing on a whole even comes close to this game.
And by ALL I mean the followng:
World size
Combat divirsity and fluidness
PvP options
Content
Non instaned main game worlds
customer support
community
Lack of bugs
A complete product feature wise
Fun factor
A game with a sense of humor that doesnt take itself to seriously, remembering its after all just a game
A sense of belonging to somethng (Faction based PvP done right)
Consistant look and feel throghout game world
A working economy
Lore
Worth mentioning a dozen times fluid game play
Regular content updates
No pedo characters running around
not over sexualized (both male and female)
Consitantly great framerates ( non headache inducing perfomance issues or memory leaks)
Amazing mod community for UI etc
Very little (typo edit) hacking and exploits
Extremely challending PvP rankings for those up for the challenge (arenas)
Theres more but thats enough
I recently discovered Openraid and the amaing raiding communite Wow has so i feel the same way about this old game offering exciting new experiences for us.
I have played many MMO's now been a lover and a hater and I can say imo WOW is the best alll around MMO, no contest sure some do somethings better but as a whole package wow is king!
I have to add my agreement to the general sentiment in this thread. While I don't play WOW anymore as a result of the changes that came along with MOP, it is still the best MMORPG on the market, bar none.
I know I've repeated myself many times on this, but I'll say it again; no game is better at human factors engineering than World of Warcraft.
It is a game me and my friends enjoyed for many years. Its a good solid & fun game to play for awhile.
I just have never understood the people that are playing it year after year after year. Its a good game, but not that good . I know a guy that has been playing steady since launch, I got bored after about 2 years and moved on.
Me and my daughter used to play as well. Fun times, enjoy
Apology accepted :-)
I think WoW is not even better then at vanilla. The Community has changed, the annoning kids are now playing the ftp games. Unfortunatly many people are afraid to communicate couse they have made bad expierience in the past. So they stick to their friends and guilds.
However, alone from the gameflow WoW is the best out there, a no. 1 if you want to have fast paced , balanced and fun PvP.
Step in the arena and break the wall down
Don't worry about being flamed, WoW is the most successful MMORPG ever. It also happens to be one of the best ever.
As someone who has played WoW since the original beta test, I can say that the game has gotten significantly worse then it use to be, but its still the best choice of MMORPG for the average gamer, unfortunately.
WoW is both a blessing and a curse. It was a wonderful addition to the MMO genre back when we were all playing Everquest, DAoC, and others, however there has been little worth playing released since WoW and that was 8 years ago.
World of Warcraft is what I play now because there is not much else. I am really hoping that Everquest Next breaks that mold and finally delivers a return to the wonderful world of norrath that I love so dearly.
I don't like WoW myself, but the did do a lot of things right, to be fair.
There is always a reason for success.
Too little too late. MMORPG's are in decline. WOW is the last cliff hanger.
I don't play WoW anymore but that's because I have spent a few thousand hours playing it. I have never played another game so much and I have played all of the major MMOs and tons of singleplayer/multiplayer games both on the PC and the consoles.
I think everyone who is interested in MMOs should play WoW. It's a game which needs to be seen to be believed. It is crazy good. Sure it has changed a lot and has dated a lot but it is still the best MMO in my opinion. All other MMOs I have played lasted me no more than 200 hours tops each. I play GW2 and even though it is a shiny new game and I am kind of enjoying it, it pales in comparison to the first time I played WoW. Leveling my first char in WoW from 1 to 60 was the most amazing gaming experience I have ever had.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
I played from classic to cata and i must say it's the best game i've ever played ...
I am getting old tho (not in RL ) and i dissagree with many of the design choices made since tbc and therefor i eventually called it quits.
I am really happy with Guild Wars 2 right now but WoW will always be this special game for me
This actually brings up a good point. In the future it would be nice if Blizzard came up with a scaling system that allowed players, once max level, to adjust any one of the xpacs or "vanilla" worlds to their current level and just enjoy the game on their own terms. I'm sure some will say, "well what's the difference between that and GW2's system?" to which I'd reply I honestly don't care whether it's similar/identical/opposite but there are some of us who enjoy a certain aspect of the WoW universe more than others so being forced to spend all our time in only one world at max level kinda sucks... Hell this is especially true for new players who may LOVE the nordic style of Wrath but couldn't care less for the more asian themed Mists.
I am an off and on WOW player, have been since release... My first char didnt hit level cap until a month before BC hit... I have had ups and downs with the game overall (didnt like BC heroics, loved wrath, DETESTED Cata until the HOT dungeons and LFR hit and am back with MOP even though I dont like the theme overall)
There is nothing wrong with liking WOW... even the haters either currently play or have played the game and most likely will play it again at some point. The reason why there are such drastic feelings about this game is it influences every other game being designed and has since it launched.... everyone wants the wow killer. They want some of its sub base and when every single one of them flops and usually flops hard people are mad because they tried to copy wow but added some gimmick that was supposed to make people come in droves. This causes the player base that is tired of WOW or wants a more robust game to be upset that its still going strong.
The thought is that if wow was just to finally start falling from its pedestal, maybe designers would stop trying to copy it with newer graphics or what not and thus stop failing hard and those people would finally have a good game again. Unfortunately as long as there is no other option for a good mmo experience out there wow will retain its numbers so the designers will keep trying to reinvent the wheel to steal away wows fanbase (and failing because those that dont like wow dont want wow lite and those that like wow dont want to lose all the options that have been developed over so many years of add ons to wow, to go to a brand new wowclone with half the size and scope that they have no attatchment to)
Eventually wow will start to decline, but blizzard is very innovative in there design philosophy and giving the players for the most part what they want, so its hard to say when that will be, but in the mean time its pretty much all there is other than some niche games out there.
In decline? How so?
Anyhow. I subbed a second account for my daughter and we have been having a blast. The soundtrack in this game is nothing short of awesome!
Cant possibly resist posting this.
I'm sure any game is question of taste / gaming style.
But so far I can't find ANY game offering that many possibilities as WoW.
I don't play it now only because of sub, but still love it!
try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2
I enjoyed my time in WoW more than I did in the previous mmo's I played, and never found an mmo that kept my attention for a fraction of the time spent after. It is a well built game; I wish they devoted a zone for some sandbox systems but no big deal. MoP is a fairly content rich expansion so I can't complain for having nothing to do.
Pretty much sums up what I was going to say. As much as I want to grab ahold of that feeling I had playing in the beginning years, I never will. New folks joining now will have plenty of fun though, I'm sure.
Most likely for me I'll end up resubbing because of nostalgia every now and then and just to mess around with it for a few days before I remember that it's no longer fun for me.
WOW is fine for what it does
but for a mmo that has zero player housing, i dont agree w you
