Ragnarok 2 Online

shem_13shem_13 Member Posts: 36

I've been looking into RO2 alot lately, and my findings were as follows:

1. It's been in development for over 2 years now.

2. It IS going to be online, as seen in the movie at the end under ragnarok it says "Online". Also read from other sources such as translated Korean sites talking about it.

3. It's going to be completely 3D. Characters, environment, etc.

4. It will more then likely have the same classes that RO had, but who knows they might throw in a surprise or two.

5. It won't be released Int'l for a while.

I know I can't wait. It's just what RO needed to bring back alot of the people that left.

iRO had something like 1.2 million unique accounts, and 15 million duplicates in the course of nearly 3 years.  When RO2 is released international, if it is any good, I can see it at 300k on release.

i'd say maybe 150K at release, and in about 1 Month, around 300-500K

What's the latest news on this project. Tentative release date? Beta testing? PC specs required?

RO2 is opening Open Beta in late september early november in Korea.  We could see an Open beta test in another 6 months.  Also Reqium Online should be in Open beta testing right now in Korea.

I will probably try it out, but Ragnarok Online was a bit too cute for me.  Maybe the 3D envoirnment in RO2 will be developed differently, reducing the fruitiness of the world.

    this game even worth playing?

Ragnarok Online was the industry leader that lead to the generic Korean mmo's we see today.  The company itself is worth 800 million US dollars.

With that kind of budget your sequel to your game that got you all the cash can and should be damn good.  They are actually trying to appeal more to western gamers with this one (i.e. The United States and Europe)  Since it was discovered the European market for this game has been increasing.

In an effort to appeal to the demographic more they are using 3d sprites instead of the 2d sprites people generally think of as either anime style or OLD.  They are also adding in the use of 2 new races.  One of which was specifically noted in an 18 point presentation on how it would appeal to the western gamer.  Where other games have elves, RO2 will have Hot Demon Girls (and guys).

They are also attempting to make the game less of a grind as it was in the past by dubbing it down.  They are making it so you can switch between classes reducing the need to remake; Stats are no longer the most important thing in-game but rather skill combination.  You can combine skills from another class with the class you are using; but with limits.  This gives a large number of different possible builds.  Also there is no excessive need to spend billions on new weapons as you do in the original, since they made it so certain equipment levels up with you, and depending how you upgrade them they turn into different more powerful and cooler equipment.  Plus if you want you can buy another item and level that up into something different.  It also cuts down on the need to buy brand new cards when you want to stick them into something slightly more powerful then your rescent weapon.

Also No, people from other countries won't be allowed in on the Korean servers as normal.  Thier is an IP ban on addresses outside of that country.  But rest assured we will most likely see this game in the states within the next year or two.  Gravity wouldnt put so much effort in appealing to the western gamer if they werent planning on the western gamer to play.  Not to mention they have a large translation staff ready to translate this game.  I am sure however that more security will be taken in making sure private servers cannot be made.  Private servers have resulted in a tremendous income loss in the states as 80% of players in the states play on private servers.

The game isn't even owned by the same company anymore. Gravity got boughtout.
  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414
It was bought out by its own subsidary for Japan.  The changes are minor; no dissolving of staff or location changes.  What it really means is that we could be seeing an english client sooner then expected.  It should also be less popular in Korea and even more popular in Japan

Gravity Corp, which made Ragnarok Online, among other things, has been sold by its founder (Kim Jung-ryool) to Softbank in Japan. He started Gravity with just 500,000 dollars five years ago, and sold his 52.4% stock in the company for almost $360 million. That's a deal, there. This means that Softbank (curiously, let by korean-japanese business men according to one source) will be at the helm of the studio for RO 2, past the beta phase. What's next for mister Kim? He'll be investing in mobile and PDA-based games. He feels as though the mobile game industry will overtake the mmo business in the near future. I'm skeptical, but you certainly can't argue with his past choices.
    From insertcredit.

One thing that RO2 might do correct is the equipment that "grows" with you (as in Ultima Online X before it was junked by EA). But knowing Gravity it will probably take huge amounts of xp to make the items usefull.

I got some more somewhat reliable info from wikipedia.  They said the game is estimated to enter its beta session in February 2006.  The actual session isnt confirmed as the Korean/Japan Open test or the English Client.  The Korean/Japan Closed beta test should be starting really soon since thier is a working game client already.

Lets hope there will be no bots in this one. Malaysia RO (mRO) has been badly contaminated until bots are playing in guild wars defending castles. Whats the fun in there playing bots.

for some reason, I really do think this game will be released when the korean version is released as well. One of the things players hated the most was that iRO released a while after kRO, GungHO (The company that bought Gravity not too long ago) knows of this, and all modern companys release things around the same time as other countrys.

Ragnarok was my best gaming experience yet, and I've played my share of MMOs. RO2 will be awsome, but it will not be like RO as much as people think. I'm not sure about the other races but the classes are completly different on the humans. Alot of hardcore RO members dont like the graphics (I like them though.) It will just be different, its hard to replace RO effeciently.

This looks awesome, I wish they'd make it free, or at least have a free type of account.
