Character controls. That's the only reason really. That and other people moving on.... imo they did a really good job making toa less of a hassle. Buff bots were a bit annoying, hopefully we avoid that with CU (pretty much do what classic did in daoc and put a max range on buffs and you're good). Other than that I loved the game.... and honestly character control is the only major issue.
I can see people leaving when toa was introduced (even though from a pve perspective it was an awesome expansion for the time). I can see people leaving due to NF, and new classes as well. In the end most of that was fixed... and I didn't leave for any of that.

While some may try and argue that EVE is just as old, EVE has been updated all along to keep in line with the times. This is not the case for DAOC.

WoW is old as fuck too. Things eve and wow have in common is they reinvent themselves. I think someone mentioned rebirth earlier. Wow has gone through a couple rebirths. Eve has constantly improved on 0.0 and PvE and crafting.
I hung in there with DAOC long after the other players in my guild left for various real life reasons. Eventually I realized I was logging in every day to play in Molvik or run around solo or zerg surfing in NF, but I was actually only having the kind of fun that I remembered from the game's early years maybe once every 2 weeks.
So I decided to take a break so that when the next MMO game out (SWOTR at that time) I wouldn't have MMO fatigue. Then when I got bored of SWTOR, I decided to take another break to be fresh for GW 2. And now I'm mostly on another MMO break while I wait for TESO, Wildstar, or something else to play for 2-3 months then quit.
The temptation to reactivate DAOC has increased thanks to Camelot Unchained, but so far I've resisted. Maybe when they get around to the new re-enlistment campaign in a few months I'll give it a shot.

Yep that seems to be the crux of it all. WAR may have had something to do with that as well as imperator (I think that's what it was called) Mythic's second attempt at an MMO. Had it not been for those two games DAOC may have seen a rebirth of it's own.

For the same reason why I only play Asheron's Call for about 2-3 hours a month. Games that are great still grow old and it is human nature to want something similar but new and improved. Example: There was nothing removetly wrong with my iPhone 4 when I traded it in for the 5, but my human emotion (the commedian would call it a First World Problem) compels me to upgrade when I can.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

We all played it and enjoyed it. You get sick of the same thing over and over again. Yeah Wow is old too and so is Eve but really DOAC had a good run. It should have been cloned after 5 years. A few modern clones of a providen game play design isnt a bad thing its when 80% of the games are all clones. Basically CU should have come sooner and GW 2 to a lesser degree.
For me I re-installed and tried it again but The Thing i liked was the mob grinding and PvP / RvR now they introduced the Quests for gear thing and i dont like that at all. If you want to start fresh you have to do quests in order to get gear and money and I dont like that at all.

No, I don't think the question has anything to do with DAoC's current population. The question was why those here, on this board, don't continue to play? Obviously, there is great interest in the game... why wait for a new version when you can continue to play the original? I think this is a really good question... and I think MJ should pay great attention to the answers, imho.

1) Buffbots. No need to elaborate... they destroyed the game in many ways.
2) ToA crap. MLs, Elemental weapons, silly abilites on overpowered items
3) 8v8 mentality. Destroyed Realm Pride and much of what DAoC was about, imo.
4) 1v1 mentality. See above.
I tried Classic Servers for awhile to avoid numbers (1) and (2), but numbers (3) and (4) were so heavily present, it just wasn't any fun. I played on Uthgard and, while it was better (I actually greatly enjoyed PvEing to 50) it has its problems with population.

Hit the nail on the head. And to think there's folks around here who actually WANT to go back to 8v8 mentality. That's taking a step back, as far as I'm concerned. If anything, this game should encourage more epic battles (with STRATEGY) since that's what truly sets an mmo game apart from a single player.

this mentality about increasing your skill grew the behaviour of not taking unskilled people into your group (and for some people even speaking with others you dont know) but for any true 8vs8'er it was never about farming other 8man it was allways about that one fight wich lasted 10-20 mins with some nice comebacks where maybe you shaman died so your group had like 0 buffs and still winning and all these kind of situations

ToA was just a step in the wrong direction given the fact that what made DAoC shine was th RvR. I understand that Mythic wanted to add content and extend the PvE experience, and it's easier to realize this kind of misstep in retrospect, but it really was a gane ruiner.
C) Buffbots made the most magical part of the game (the RvR) exponentially less fun.
I remember being able to run around solo with my Blademaster holding my bow to bait assassins into perfing me and giddily imagining their shock when my HP bar only depleted slightly. Sh*t didn't happen after buffbot dominance. The RPS dynnamic collapsed. A buffbotted scout coukd melee an unbuffed light tank down. In a group setting that is fine. Buffs should matter, but I personally like soloing quite a bit, and someone else soloing with a second account buffing them... That's basically the same thing as a cash shop that sells I Win buttons.
I really think they understand these things at CSE and we are going to be pleasantly surprised when/if CU gets funded.

-in general the game is ten years old
-Buff bots
-Mounts
-TOA (I went back and couldnt find anyone to group with or talk to or anything to do any of that PVE crap)
-Vamps
-Tired of new frontiers
-UI sucks compared to what we have today (one area where they can take a page out of today's games)
-ridiculously small player base
-been there done that, nothing else to be done that I haven't done already for years
-I dont mind boating back etc, but I liked the long wait we had before with the porters, as opposed to the speed you can come back with after you kill someone. I'd rather make them wait longer so they arent back in 5-10 minutes or so.

I don't know I loved farming zergs with an 8 man, other 8 mans with their coldown down and ESPECIALLY stealthers with true sight(grouping hunter who had it up). That is what made the game fun the chaos of it, I never bought into the whole do not add mentality, I think it really became more of a thing in NF I guess(I quit by then). For that sort of gamemplay WoW Arenas or Guild Wars was supperior, especially GW1
I don't play because I have two friends that I've been gaming with for years and they enjoy playing gw2. To me, gaming = being with my friends. So I play gw2 until we all mutually decide to move to a new game.
time007: oh yeah I forgot vamps. Sheesh! I was willing to deal with animist and bainshee bugs, but a crappy class that damages balance... Ugh. Again, I see what they were going for, but it just felt wrong.
Also, you are right. The game is just old. Graphics aside (which I personally don't care that much about) it is just dated.

I'm just looking at it from my own angle. I quit back when RvR was still rather strong, so i am unaware of many changes made after 03. I simply really never looked back, I did try it when they released those graphical upgrades, that feels like it was so long ago. The thing I noticed rather quickly was how outdated the game felt just from a control/interface perspective. It was hard to get past that archaic feel. That was years ago. I can't imagine how old it would feel now. In 03 I purchased SWG, which felt leaps and bounds ahead of either DAOC or EQ from a game-play perspective.
I feel this would have a huge impact on the population of a game. Maybe I'm wrong.

As for the OP, its pretty obvious from a lot of the posters in this thread and from my experiences Trials of Atlantis killed DAoC for me, i could have lived with any of the other decisions made with the game but ToA just killed it for me. By the way, ToA was all PvE, but that PvE affected your performance in PvP making it required of those who only wanted to RvR/PvP to have to PvE.
As it is now, with all the new additions newer MMOs have made to there games it would be extremely hard for me to take a step backwards with UI's and control schemes. CU will hopefully have a more streamlined UI and controls.

Too much power creep, gear inflation, everyone has a million different abilities.
They've gutted core classes, archers are basically mages now.
And, DAoC's big appeal was in its perfect balance between PvE and PvP.
That's now gone. PvE is just a chore, there's no grouping, everything is WoW style hand holding bullshit PvE. Instances everywhere.
And they got rid of ladders.
What are your reasons for not playing? Or are you still playing? It is not made clear in your post.
