Hi, yeah, god knows how many posts you have seen like this...me too....anyway, I've had a splitting headache trying to choose one of the following to follow up. I am not in the mood to follow them all up and would prefer just following up one.....problem is, I don't know which one to choose.
These are the games I need to choose one from:
1. Vanguard - Saga of Heroes
2. The Chronicles of Spellborn
3. The Chronicle
4. Darkfall
I would choose Darkfall, but major vapourware game, obviously with respect to the devs since they work on it part time.
The Chronicles of Spellborn has some nice ideas, and some Ideas I dont like. Well armours are just given to you in the begining, they are just for looks, and weapons I am not sure, just I know you don't pick up weapons as loot, you choose it from the begining. All weapons are equal in damage and stuff it seems
The Chronicle, I don't really know much about. Just a little about the features, some cool ideas and stuff. What scares me is the dev team working on 3 projects at once. I don't feel confident that a dev team can pull of that kind of stunt.....but they are welcome to try. I just don't know whether to expect The Chronicle to be great or not. Not really impressed by what I have seen till now.
Vanguard - The Saga of Heroes sounds and looks cool. There are some nice ideas, though I keep hearing a lot of people say it will be very carebear. The carebear thing and also group locking with MOBs sounds annoying. I never tried except in EQ2 and I really hated it. I am willing to give it another go, but anyway, please give me feedback on the carebear rumour about Vanguard - The Saga of Heroes.....is it true?
Anyway, thanks for reading....as you can see, I am interested in a fantasy set MMORPG, which is still yet to come out. I am hoping people will give me their own feelings about the games.....I have some patience to wait for some, but others...I need more of a reason to wait for them, for example like Darkfall....its still taking too long and nowhere near any true beta announcement. Anyway, irrelevant, thanks for reading! I hope your replies will help, thanks again!
Comments
I'd go with The Chronicle. I'm not much into the whole fantasy thing, but the developers seem to have a lot of great ideas. Plus, once you sign up for that, you'll get all their other games. Only problem is, isn't coming out for a little while and it sounds too good to be true.

why are you trying to choose between games that are nowhere near ready to be released?
why not wait until they are released or have a demo or at least wait until we actually get to see more info on them?
trying to decide on something based on hype is worthless
Personally they all sound great to me, but especially waiting for the two Chronicle(s) games. (I know they're totally unrelated.)
exactly.....
im looking forward to vanguard the most even though its way to early to tell. vanguard suits my taste the best from what i can tell so far.
read this http://www.vanguardsoh.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1044304#post1044304 then come back and talk to me about the vanguard/soe fiasco.....

Roma Victor isn't for me, but I still think its a revolutionary game! And aren't you upsessed with seeing Roma Victor fry?
id say go chronicle
but theres no open beta and it isnt out yet so no trial
Firstly please stop flaming threads, I am getting annoyed seeing so many of you posters trying to justify threads, like these, and what makes it worse is you didn't even bother to donate anything other then your comments about this thread. I don't need comments, thats not going to help, I am interested in people replying to my post.
Secondly I am fully aware that I am asking people for feedback based on the games's hypes.....and yes I will base my choice on that hype. I don't expect anybodies feedback or opinion to be accurate, just want to know what other people believe. I did intend on mentioning about me expecting replies based on hpye on my initial post, but because of problems while I try to post, the 5th time I did that post, I left it out, and it finally posted. I also am totally aware that these games are not out yet. I mentioned that atleast once in my initial post...and I don't see whats your problem.
Now about the games...for one, Vanguard - Saga of Heroes is defintiley going to be a good game. I know that because I know who the dev team are....I have read about their plans, and I can already picture their game. I have heard a lot of negative stuff about it, but don't take most of it seriously. What I do find to be very possible is the rumour about Vanguard SOH being very carebear. This is what may put me off the game.......the devs say it will not be easy, while a lot of people say its going to be carebear and I read some things about combat...and yeah it did make it look quite carebear.
My intention with this post is just to choose one of the four above, stick to it, follow it up on its pre release activities, learn more about the game world and its lore, and get to know the community. I can't do that with all 4 games..I just don't have the patience, the bother and most importantly I don't have the time.
I hope I justified why I posted this thread.....my intention is just to choose one....and yes I do believe they will all be great games!!!! They have great ideas....which make them possible. Anyway I would appreaciate replies rather then comments on the thread.
jnot trying to flame you, just don't understand why you would want to do what you are doing.
you want to find out the most hyped game and only follow it??? if you're interested in all 4 games, follow all 4! what if the game they hyped sucks? now you spent all that time worrying about it and following up on it but don't know anything about the alternatives.
your post just makes no sense.
Well I thought as much!....I dont think I have to repeat myself to your recent post.
Anyway, in your initial post in the thread, I could tell you are the type who misses information in a thread....Read all my posts over again, then edit your recent post, if you feel like.....I already answered to you why I can't follow up on 4 games!
Did I just hear someone say "The Chronicle"?! Where the hell's my #1 fanboy foam finger!......
Ah ha! Here it is!

Grrrr!!!! this site is the only one on the planet i have trouble putting pics up on...anyways.
This game is rapidly coming together and should see the light of day early next year. It has some great features, one of my favorites being twitch-based combat. here are the rest:
- What is The Chronicle?
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/2276/foamfinger0wg.jpgThe Chronicle is an MMORPG set in a medieval fantasy world of swords, sorcery, and high adventure.
· What is an MMORPG?
MMORPG stands for massive multiplayer online role-playing game, which is a persistent, three-dimensional world available to thousands of players simultaneously over the Internet.
· How do I play?
Playing The Chronicle requires a subscription to MMO Center, but after that, you are able to play anytime you wish. You first create a character, which involves choosing things like a race and a name, then customizing your characters appearance and attributes. After that, your character develops as you choose, learning new skills, exploring new places, and fitting into the games society however you want.
· How is The Chronicle similar to other MMORPGs?
The Chronicle is similar to other MMORPGs in that it is based on a fantasy setting, complete with dragons, elves, magic, and swashbuckling. People familiar with the genre will find it easy to acclimate to The Chronicle, but dont be surprised to see a lot of new material, ideas, and adventures.
· How is The Chronicle different from other MMORPGs?
What really sets The Chronicle aside from other MMORPGs is the degree of customization and gameplay options available to the players. Some games try to convince you that picking from one of five different head models constitutes customization and that the deciding between two available monsters to fight serves as gameplay versatility. The Chronicle absolutely destroys that paradigm, allowing players choices at every corner, even the choice to have fewer choices. For example, character creation can be an elaborate process of fine-tuning attributes and appearance to minute detail or it can be achieved simply by selecting an archetype and making a handful of minor changes.
In the gameplay department, The Chronicle once again blows away the competition. Previous MMORPGs have been released offering grinding as the sole activity, where players are expected to perform the same routines over and over again simply to reach that next level or win that next item. The Chronicle allows players to choose their characters role in the world, becoming powerful warlords, enigmatic wizards, charming socialites, rugged adventurers, shadowy loners, epic heroes, or any combination thereof. Our world isnt just an online combat simulation; its an entire world of possibilities.
· What kinds of characters can I play?
Anyone who has played previous MMORPGs will likely be familiar with the class system of character creation and development, where you must select a profession that youre stuck with for your characters entire career. A warrior will never be able to cast a spell and a wizard will never be able to swing a sword. By abandoning the tired old class system in favor of dynamic skills and attributes, The Chronicle allows players to be whatever they want, allocating their starting skills in numerous ways and choosing their own path after that. If you want to cast spells, learn the proper skills; the same goes for combat abilities, stealth, crafting, interaction, and exploration. No two characters will ever be identical.
· What races are available?
There are 27 playable races, with many more planned for future updates. The first release will include nine base races with between two and six sub-races each.

-Eastern
-Southern
-Western

· How will characters advance?
Through the skill system, characters in The Chronicle advance according to their activities, which is directly contrary to how advancement operates in most other MMORPGs. In them, you are expected to murder as many things as possible, earning you arbitrary experience points. Those points add up to levels, and new levels provide you with skill points to allocate among your abilities. Basically, in order to get better at anything, even crafting or healing, you must kill more and more creatures.
The Chronicle flips that system upside down, allowing skills to improve as theyre used, so that if you want to get better at crafting or healing, you just go ahead and start doing those things. You dont have to slaughter entire tribes of monsters to be able to craft a better helmet. This satisfies both the aggressive and pacifist types of gameplay, because combat skills improve the same way, by being used.
You will notice that your character in The Chronicle still has a level, but that level is determined by your skills, not vice versa. It is really only there as a quick gauge of your own progress in the game.
· How will The Chronicle handle both hardcore and casual players?
Aside from the multitude of gameplay options available to each player, The Chronicle further adapts to different styles by allowing players to choose their role in the world. During character creation, players choose to be either regular or main characters. A regular character is just as powerful and has just as many abilities as any character in any other MMORPG, but main characters are completely different. They advance faster and reach higher limits than regular characters, are much more difficult to kill, and several game mechanics are only available to them, such as holding rank in NPC factions or starting their own kingdoms. The downside is that main characters have but one life; if they die, theyre permanently gone. The only positive side to that situation is that it takes a main character to kill to kill another main character.
· What happens if my character dies?
For regular characters, death will incur penalties, but the player will be able to choose between several options. Bind points allow respawning, but the closer to your point of death you want to respawn, the greater your penalty. Also, players can choose to respawn right where they died, but the penalty will be considerably greater, including long-lasting wounds that diminish attributes and skills. The Chronicle also allows characters at least a few seconds to recover or be saved from dying via first aid, so that players dont just wink out like a light bulb at zero hit points.
Main characters are permanently gone when they die.
· How will the in-game community work regarding factions, groups, etc?
The Chronicle will be released with several NPC factions, from small tribes to expansive kingdoms, which allow players to join and hold rank, not just run errands. Anyone can start their own group for a quick adventure, but only main characters may start their own factions, commanding armies of NPC soldiers and conquering territory.
· How will crafting work?
Crafting in The Chronicle is modular and highly customizable, consisting of a chassis and module system. There is also a wide variety of materials to construct items from, with the finished product having a combination of features depending on what it was made out of, how skilled the crafter was, and several other factors. Players will be able to create weapons, armor, utilitarian equipment, vehicles, and even buildings.
· How will combat work?
Combat in The Chronicle will he handled with a real-time interface at includes myriad tactical options. The controls are akin to most first person shooters, but melee combat is much more capable than it usually is under those systems. Players will have to manage their energies properly and use the terrain to their advantage to gain the upper hand. In short, combat isnt just a tedious, mathematical slugfest of who is the higher level?
· How will magic work?
Perhaps the area in which The Chronicle shines the brightest is in the completely personalized magic system, where players can design their own spells, tailoring effects to fit individual situations, and cooperate with others to achieve tremendous effects.
· Will everyone start in the same overcrowded place?
No, because most races have a selection of homeland starting locations.
· Will there be territory control and mass combat tactics?
Yes. Player-run factions will be able to expand and conquer other provinces, gaining real benefits from holding and managing them properly.
· Will The Chronicle actually have smart AI?
Absolutely, because were entirely redesigning the way artificial intelligence works, making it more dynamic, like a vast interwoven tapestry of relationships. Everything affects everything else, literally.
· Will my name always float over my head, extinguishing any hint of stealth or espionage?
Of course not. What kind of half-assed game would curse you with a gigantic neon sign over your head that allowed anyone and their uncle to unmistakably identify you from a high orbit above the planet? I mean, seriously, thats like a bald CIA agent with his name and social security number tattooed on his forehead in a thick, red font. How do you introduce yourself to someone when they knew half your life history from two mountaintops away? Whats next, slapping some simple gauge of your characters relative power up there, too, like his level? Great, now youve got a realm full of monotonous drones broadcasting campy fantasy names, all bickering about why level 62 is infinitely better than level 61. No, no, no, were not doing that; that would be incredibly stupid.
· How will guilds come into play?
Beyond the umbrella of protection the NPC factions offer to new people, player-run guilds are the game. They recruit, organize, strategize, and contest for control of the world.
· What kind of religious system will there be?
The Chronicle uses a polytheistic variant of religious system akin to the Greek pantheon of gods, but not all races worship divine deities. Some races worship legendary heroes, some worship astronomical bodies, some worship physical things and places, while some even worship ideals. Exactly how faith affects gameplay is still in the works.
· What is the level of control players will have of towns?
Players will be able to hold office and engage in politics in some towns, but were also planning to incorporate completely player-created towns, where players would obviously have total control.
· What can players do with its water environment?
Almost anything that can be done in the land environment. Sea Elves have cities, battles will be fought, secluded underwater caverns can be explored, and riches are there to be taken.
· What sort of race relations will there be?
Our EAI database handles how NPC factions (and races) interact with each other, and no game systems are in place to dictate how players regard the other races.
· How many crafting and combat skills will there be?
The skill list we have right now is rapidly approaching 100 individual skills, with almost a quarter of those dedicated to combat and another quarter focusing on crafting. Remember that crafting in The Chronicle isnt just turning ore into helmets, it also incorporates engineering, architecture, alchemy, and even spell creation.
· What is the cost of the download (if any) and any major expansions?
MMO Center does not charge for the initial download or any expansions; our price never goes up. You dont need to buy a $50 box in the store to get started.
· About the main characters, how will the "second chance" be implemented?
The second chance system that main characters enjoy isnt 100% reliable, nor does it occur in every imaginable situation. Getting taken down by a patrol of goblins is one thing, as they could drag you back to their camp for dinner (and all of the chances to escape that entails) but falling off the side of a mountain miles from the nearest civilization is another thing entirely. In short, main characters will never be able to rely on the second chance system; its just a nice little unexpected perk they might encounter.
· How will chat be handled (up-close or global)?
Were not including a global chat, and right now were trying to separate how communication will work between regular and main characters. What we do know now is that communication will function differently between the two character types.
· Will items wear out and/or break?
Yes, but in real-world playtime, not mere hours of in-game time. Also, no items will ever be completely destroyed, but they will degrade to the point of being useless. In other words, everything can be repaired.
· Will characters age?
While characters might not age as time goes by in the game, one of the systems were working with right now involves designating an age for your character at creation, with younger characters having better physical attributes and older characters having better mental attributes.
· Will the weather system have an effect on gameplay?
Absolutely, from visual effects to actual occasions where NPCs and events only happen (or stop happening) in certain weather conditions, the weather will affect gameplay.
· Are you planning any forms of quick or instant transportation?
Teleportation is part of our magic system and were also working with mounts, ships, and aerial transportation.
· Will character interaction be determined by 'faction' (ala WoW)? Or will any character be able to interact with any other character in any way they see fit?
Anyone can interact with anyone.
· Can you explain what type of 'justice system', if any, you are planning for the game?
Our justice system will be more along the lines of a capable and rapid NPC police force than a bunch of hard-coded barriers like you cannot attack this player or you cannot enter this area because of your reputation.
· Will food / drink play an important role? Or, like most games, will eating and drinking be beneficial but unnecessary?
Eating and drinking will be available activities, providing certain benefits, but were also working to make them requirements in specific places, like having water in the desert or rations at last once a day.
· Graphics: Are you going for realism, or a more stylized look?
On the spectrum of realism and style, were a bit more towards the realism end.
· How will inventory management be handled? Will characters only be able to carry a 'realistic' amount of weight / items or whatever they can cram in their 10 backpacks (like so many other MMORPGs)?
Our inventory system incorporates mass and volume, both in realistic proportions. Nobody is going to have a wagon in their pocket or 5,000 arrows in a quiver.
· Do you plan the ability for players to contract other players to perform tasks? (In other words, will players be able to hire other players in a secure fashion)?
The secure side of player interaction will likely be confined to the barter/merchant system.
· How 'static' will the game world be?
Some NPC dominated areas will be physically static, but which NPCs occupy those places is handled by the EAI engine. As previously stated, though, player-created towns and factions will be as dynamic as the players that compose them.
· How dynamic, or unique, will the magic system be?
Instead of set spells, the same ones everyone has access to, The Chronicle will feature a spell system that allows players to design their own effects from several choices, then tweak those effects by increasing or decreasing various traits, like damage, range, area of effect, or duration.
· Will you use the "descending tree" model that some games use to organize skills and actions?
Crafting/magic/combat aren't exactly the descending trees you're used to from Diablo and WoW, but they're set up in a similiar ranked fashion. The difference is that they're not carved in stone like that, so each level of a certain category might have numerous abilities. It's up to the player which they learn and which they don't. No, race will have nothing to do with what you can and cannot build. However, you will likely need to be able to breathe underwater to construct underwater buildings, which might prove difficult for everyone but sea elves... Crafting is going to play a BIG role in our games, not just The Chronicle.
· you be able to build automated defenses of some sort, like a machine rather than guards.
Any such automated defenses would be limited to golems and the like in The Chronicle, but expect to see a good system of hiring NPC guards and merchants.
· Let's talk guns.
The Chronicle is mainly medieval fantasy, but with limited gunpowder technology. Basically, you're going to have cannon on ships and forts, but no muskets or flintlock pistols.
· Wait a minute... cannon?
We wanted to include all of that "piratey" good stuff with ship vs. ship battles and all, but we really wanted to avoid the whole "why bring a sword to a gunfight" thing. You get booming battles on the high seas and explosive ship dramatics, but you don't have to worry about orcs with muskets gunning you down in the forest. You're not going to have the whole "get into the gun" thing you might know from Planetside or World War 2 Online... there won't be any "cannon turrets" or neat HUD crosshair displays for aiming... It's all going to be operated by standing next to it and lining the sights up by eyeballing it. Cannon will be powerful, but also dangerous and difficult. Cannon are dangerous to operate unless you know what you're doing (have a high skill), but in The Chronicle, you improve skills by using them. You may draw your own conclusions.
· What about skill attrition? Aren't people going to be upset if they lose all of their hard-earned skills?
I don't foresee a lot of people really worrying about (or even noticing) the skill attrition, simply because of how skills are improved. If you're improving skills by using them, then they're certainly in no danger of going down. Only a skill you haven't used in quite a while would begin to slowly degrade, and if you haven't used the skill in a while, why would you care if it goes down a bit? To clarify, skills will not suddenly spiral back down to zero if you go half an hour without using them. Also, skills that you once had way up high that drop down will rise much faster the second time you get back into using them.
· What if someone maxes out every skill? Will attrition help prevent that?
This system isn't there to chain people to their computer, it's simply a preventative measure to keep players from maxing out, which is more for their protection (from boredom) than for our protection (having super characters ruin the game somehow). Actually, our games will have so many skills that it's a mathematical impossibility to keep them all at the higher ranks.
· Will there be a distinct visual difference to identify main characters from regular ones?
No.
· How will you handle griefers, or players that constantly kill other players just for kicks?
Regular characters will have multiple bind points to choose from when respawning, with increasing death penalties the closer to your point of death you wish to return to life. This system has a neat side effect of helping to curb repeat griefing, because it allows you to respawn farther from the griefer with fewer penalties if you so desire.
· Will there be global chat channels?
Then there are methods of communication available to those with the skills or magic to do so, like message spells or hand signals. Communication is split between main and regular characters, just like a lot of the game's other features. Expect main characters to have realistic restrictions, but regulars to have luxuries like channels. One thing is for sure: there will be NO global or general channels. It's not just fame and glory for main characters... it's hardships and danger.
· Will you be filtering out or limiting Internet slang or "leetspeak?"
No, we will not be limiting what players can say, but our NPCs do have speech string recognition. What that means is that they're listening for keywords or phrases and will respond to them. The leetspeaking player might have a tough time getting information out of a picky NPC that demands to be spoken to in a proper fashion.
· Will you enforce role-playing?
One of the things we love doing is tricking people into role-playing... for example, the "human town, goblin town" situation, where you are offered rewards from one to go and harass the other. If someone is trying to earn some rank with the humans, they're going to do quests for them, but one of his buddies might have a quest to forge peace between the two towns, so they get into all kinds of sticy arguments. We hope to introduce a "quest" system that makes you not just wonder "how," but also "why" and "should I?"
