Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts have announced a move unlike any I've ever seen. After an announcement earlier this month (see this story) of changes coming to the game that was met with hostility from some fans, they are offering refunds to those who had purchased their latest expansion - Trials of Obi-Wan - before that date.
On November 3rd we announced our exciting new game enhancements for Star Wars Galaxies. We believe these modifications will significantly improve the gameplay experience and deliver a true Star Wars adventure. However, if your Star Wars Galaxies account was in good standing as of November 3, 2005, you purchased the latest expansion pack, Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi- Wan before November 3, 2005, and you find that these new enhancements are not to your liking, you may request a refund of the purchase price of the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion pack.
In order to obtain a refund, you may do either of the following on or before December 1, 2005:
Please include in your email or written request your name, address, telephone number, email address and Station Name (but NOT your password). You will be asked for information verifying your request and, upon the issuance of a refund, your access to any Trials of Obi-Wan content or features will be removed from your Star Wars Galaxies account. Please allow four to six weeks for processing. It is our mission to provide you with an experience that is worthy of the name Star Wars! May the Force be with you! The Star Wars Galaxies team |
The original announcement can be found here.

Though I like what they are doing with the game I hated the whole "surprise were changing the game after you bought the xpansion " thing. That really screwed some ppl over.
Im happy there refunding and would like to applaud those that kept up the pressure. Something tells me they wouldnt have refunded unless a thousand angry customers would complained.

I think they can afford to refund those who dont like the new expansion now because a lot of people who dumped the game early because it was lacking are starting to renew there accounts to check it out. SOE will have to do the math. New accounts because they finally improved a boring game long overdue for an overhaul vs people leaving now because they dont like change. This is more that fair for everyone.

Boring ????
I found starwars Galaxies the best game i played well in a long time been playing over 2 years now...
I not looking forward to this expansion but will give it a chance due to not wanting to lose what i have put into the game
My main critisism it that a game should expand and improve as it goes and you cannot call removing proffessions and choice an improvment... i can only hope that the combat systems makes up for all that we have lost in the game
Apart from that gripe i have enjoyed the game immensly
Holy crap!!!!
I can't beleive SOE did this! This has to be a first!
*wonders if Hades has frozen over*
Its better than sutting it down like EA did. If they dont have the client base to support the game they dont make a bottom line they have to try something different. You know there not doing this to piss everyone off. They need to increase Market Share and they finally did there research and saw what the majority of mmorpg wants. My opinion (which is not worth anything to anyone but me) is that give it a chance so they can continue the game. Electonic Arts shut down 2 very good (again opinion) games due to lack of client base. SOE does not want to do that and my guess through research and focus groups decided to try and gear there game more mainstream. You can flame me but I dont even know if I like the new changes and im far from mainstream, I like Saga of Ryzom (go figure). Ya gotta give them credit for yankin up stakes and makin a major change like this to try and turn there product around. Best of luck to them and everyone stickin with it.

SWG isn't at the point where it has to change or shutdown, some servers are still doing quite well, even tho they all have less people then they have had at some points in the past.
I think the refunds are because of one reason : Thier lawyers stepped in, and they said : "You guys messed up." So they are trying to cover thier asses, and are offering a refund, rather then face a large lawsuit. Or dozens, if not hundreds of smaller cases.
I've tried to get into this game on three different occasions, but each time I've left because it was just too boring. I don't have a lot of MMORPG experience, but I've played AO, WOW, this game and currently EQII. Player created content was a good idea that never really panned out, I only have a subscription to this game because of the station deal, I look forward to trying the revamped game. I do feel for those who enjoyed the old game, and now are essentially being told that all there hard work was for nothing. I think that Lucas Arts weren't happy with the subscription levels and the direction of SWG and demanded radical action.
Well.... so they should...
But good on them for doing it....
The game is still screwed

"Some fans" is an understatement similiar to "Some people think there is global warming."
What a shame they don't just fix the old problems instead of making a new game. Change is good but my 3 expansions and 4 accounts are not going to be around to see them change what they said... AGAIN.
