BUFF BOTS - QUESTION FOR Mr. Jacobs

Mr. Jacobs, I have been following all of your postings on your website, and read some of the posts here. If you already mentioned this I apologize.

As a huge DAOC fan, member since a month after its release the things that drove me and my friends away were;

1) - TOA - I later came back when the classic server was up, and still had a great deal of fun.

2) - Too much land and not enough population -(Darkness falls was sooo much fun at one point...)

3) - Buff Bots

Being more of a solo player (NS, Ranger) not having a second account and a buffbot was a huge disadvantage as many of your enemies did.

Having a person who pays for a second account just for high level buffs makes the game less about skill and more about who is going to pay to win.

Can you make a statement regarding buffbots and what you will do to eliminate them, or if you do intend to eliminate them?

Famous quote from Sanya on the old forums.

"You can forget the buffbot argument, because they don't exist"

I still laugh at that to this day.

There won't be a buffbot problem. Look at War, no buffbots. Actually most mmo s have no buffbots so it's easy to not have them. MJ also said there will be very little pve so that means no toa type stuff. It looks like MJ will be able to make the exact game that rvr players have been wanting.

I healed Mistwraith and all I got was this stupid tee-shirt!

Surprising that it took this long for a post specifically about buffbots.  I, for one, will not play the game if there is an opportunity to use a buffbot... period... end of story.  I assume most people interested in the game are of a similar mind.

I played War for a month before I was ready to hang myself so I don't remember it that well. I know most games don't have them, and I know it would be easy to eliminate them. That being said there is a bit of a trust issue that I have with Mark when he was with Mythic and they did NOTHING to eliminate it, because IMO they saw it as more revenue.

It doesn't effect 8x8 play so alot of people are like "it doesn't matter, it isn't an issue" it really only comes into play when you have lone people or stealth groups.

I'm also hoping there are no buff bots. Moreoever I'd be perfectly happy if there were no stat buffs at all. If I do play a healing class, I'd rather focus on healing and damage or CC than handing out buffs.

    1. Buffbots are great.

    2. ToA was a great expansion.

    3. Huge areas to fight are fantastic.

    4. Stealthers of all kinds suck and should not be thought of in this game.

There, I think I answered everything.

    Edit: You're welcome!

They eliminated buff bots in classic servers until those died off. As long as they do that here it should be fine. I don't mind having a good amount of  buffs in game, but I definately wouldn't be opposed to skipping out on normal stat buffs for things like haste, and the regen songs.

    This.

At the least, don't make stat buffs so hugely overpowering.

If there are no buff bots I'll have absolutely NO indicator for players to avoid. Because if you pay an extra $15 a month for a little skill advantage, you're a mega-nerd and I shouldn't associate myself with you.

make a buffbot like class with some side effects (healing or rupt or what ever) so they arent only in group for buffs + give buffs a cap range or a 10 min timer so u cant utilize em when you're solo ...

having a class with a huge amount a buffs and buff shears and some side abilitys produces a great tactical aspect for the group play so in my opinion not implementing this kind of a class would be a mistake

I think the cause of buff bots stemmed from the fact that you could specialize your skill points that way. Since most of the games to come out since are not really focused that way, the problem itself died out with the mechanic. As long as we dont see a return to putting skill points into buff spells as a primary way to spec your class, we wont have to deal with them.

The problem is, especially in a RvR only game, any slight advantage someone can get and exploit.... they will. If that involves spending an extra $10-$15 a month for a 10%-15% gain for their character they will.
