First great RvR experience in Daoc

SatariousSatarious Member UncommonPosts: 1,073

I was a Briton Armsman standing in a Keep.  The chat channel was abuzz with warnings about a zerg twice our size of Midgardians fast approaching.  Once the Midgards hit the Keep door, you could hear all kinds of spells going off and people dying.  Visually, I could see giant blue hammers pounding all along the top of the Keep walls (well, technically they were pounding on players on the walls).  I remember getting that first "oh s**t!" feeling.  It was pretty epic.  No other MMO had this type of experience at the time. I pretty much decided right then and there to quit Everquest forever and play this fantastic game that got it right when it came to pvp.

I've been trying to recreate that feeling ever since....  Yes, you lose some of that luster as you experience it over and over, but I think innovation in rvr is the key to keep it fresh.  Unfortunately, pretty much all of the MMO companies have chased the WoW model with the ESports and dumbing everything down, etc.  which  is basically only taking a step back from what Daoc accomplished.  I'm hoping that CU will finally be able to take a step FORWARD from daoc.

I was a hib Ranger, and got owned by a Shadowblade in Thidranki, lol. I'm pretty sure that was my first. :) Btw, awesome story bro, very nostalgia-inducing, haha.

I could write a book on epic RvR experiences, tales of fear, intimidation, excitement, adrenaline, chaos, pride and so on! Here's one of my first:

I was just a Level 40 still going through the grind enjoyably, I was then in a guild which was in one of the biggest alliances on Alb. I had just been promoted to a rank where I can read alliance chat. That night, there was a spam on guild/alliance and even public /yells about a HUGE midgardian raid on our relic keep - Castle Excalibur it was called. It was a ninja raid, they didn't take any other keeps in our frontier, they just ran their army through from Hadrian's wall all the way to forest sauvage where our castle stood without being spotted by anyone along the way. Everyone were scramming into groups to go and defend. I wanted to defend too, I knew I wasn't a Level 50 yet but my guild-mates said come anyway, they needed everyone they could get.

We quickly grouped and rushed out of our portal keep, we ran with another group to rally with our defensive forces near the relic keep that was being attacked..... On the way there we were ganked by a Midgard flank patrol of 3 full groups... their sole duty was to cut off our reinforcements to the defenders at the keep, we re-grouped and tried again, but they had stealther scouts on watch at different paths to the relic keep.. which kept them informed on all of our movements and we couldn't over-come them and reach the relic keep. We lost the relic. it was a well planned and organized raid... this was not an experience of heroics but it was still EPIC. It was tragic but angered us too, and it lead to a follow-up raid to re-take the relic which we won. Oh the realm pride.

I grew to become a leader of my own guild, I knew every path and shortcut in the frontiers, and eventually lead raids of my own. I have never been able to replicate that experience and I would be pleasantly surprised if I could even in CU. I'm confident though that CU will get the closest ;-)

My first epic Emain battle. I was so outclassed and my NS had little to nothing to offer the battle until I got into alliance chat, when I realized that there were tons of Nightshades out there with no role to play. So we organized a stealth flank attack and pretty much all (of the assassins) died to the Alb force but harried their casters and support enough to win our side a victory. F*cking realm pride, man. It was the best.

Back then, only 16 years old i organized a relic raid saturday-Sunday night at 3am. I was terrified the whole time, i lead 200 people, most of which were so much farther along in knowledge about the game, in realm rank, in age etc. i was shaking the whole time, but we did manage to capture all 4 enemy relics that night and it was the most rewarding feeling i have ever had inside gaming, i was so proud, my name was known from thereon and i could not help but being proud of myself :D

My first RvR experiences on my first character (armsman) in the first months after release:

    • I wandered out into Forest Sauvage to xp in my low 20s and came across an afk Lurikeen (presumably a ranger or nightshade). I beat him down and got 1 rp. Score!
    • Xping in Snowdonia my group in its high 20s was attacked several times by a Lurikeen ranger. My theurgist guild leader eventually took him down one-on-one.
    • In our mid 30s, we went to Emain Macha and promptly wiped to the goborchends in the trees across from the portal keep.
    • Around level 39, I went on a raid to Odin's Gate to take Bledmeer Faste. It was like a group or two of us. There was maybe 1 or 2 Mids defending including a thane who peppered us with giant blue hammers. Ultimately we wiped to guards.
    • Finally in my 40s I went to Emain Macha to do what all Albs do: die at the Albion Milegate. Fight after fight my armsman would get chain CCed and never get to actually do anything. It was then I decided to shelve him and work on my smite cleric instead.

Beside much epic moments, the moments I stil remember happily where when we get information about a relic-raid, aimed to our snowdonia fortress. I stand on the walls, ingame there was a beautiful dawn and the red sun illuminates the snow, meanwhile I heard the birds before my own window, since it was also dawn at 4:30 a.m (or something like that).

This was a very EPIC. For the records, that night we did not lost the relic ;) (Europe: Lyonesse / Albion)

    MMO's played so far:
    UO,EQ,DAOC,EQ2,GW,ROM,WOW,WAR,AOC,LOTRO,RIFT,TSW,GW2,POE
Looking forward to: Camelot Unchained, Star Citizen

Heh. The thing that is most amazing to me in hindsight is I had no idea the game had RvR when I bought it. I mostly bought it because the screenshots my guild leader showed me of his paladin standing in Stonehenge in Salisbury Plains at sunset looked damn cool. I'm not sure I even knew that Lurikeen was an enemy player until I killed him and got the rp.

Not sure, tmtProdigy, it has to happend back in Summer 2002, or 2003, old frontiers (I loved them much more than the new one)

Best RvR experience. Had to be on Genevere , my Armsman hadn't been L50 for very long, my guild was contacted and told about a super secret plan to take down all 5 Midgard keeps, at once!  The plan was to get up at like 3 am, meet by 4 amid at 5 am assault all 5 keeps at the same time.

The day came and I woke up with the help of my alarm, got online and showed up outside our gate. People were showing up steadily and the alliance leaders finally got there and began organizing them into groups. Around 4 am we moved out, everyone /stuck into a line that was so long the graphics had trouble rendering everyone. We split and headed off toward our keep we were to assault. We arrived without sighting any enemies, so we lurked in the trees some distance from the keep awaiting the command to charge. It seemed like forever, but finally the command came and we dashed for the keep. At first we were only met by the NPC defenders, we cracked the gate and flooded into the keep. I recall seeing a couple of players high up, tossing spells and arrows at us. By the time we were all inside fighting things slowed down to a slideshow. We crashed the server twice that I recall, but finally our keep fell to our blades. I recall seeing the notices of other keeps falling during our battle and while waiting for the server to come back I took a look at the realm map, seeing that all but 1 keep had fallen to our forces.

Got to hand it to the Mids, they began turning up trying to throw us back, but we had too many fighters and they were too few. At one time all our leaders went LD and I ended up commanding the assault. I remember telling the alliance leaders that "all our heads are LD!" One of the raid leaders said "take command!" I had no idea what to do so began calling people to my position and kept pressing toward the top. Eventually our leaders got back online and I gratefully gave up control of the assault. I remember we held those keeps for most of the day, but eventually the Mids took back a couple of them. That raid was talked about for some time.          I remember people would say "oh you were there? Wow I bet it was fun!" That was the most memorable experience for me from a MMO. I'm really hoping that similar experiences will be possible in CU. With no PvE I think more epic battles will be fought, especially if the frontier areas are large enough all sorts of craziness should be possible.

That really brought back memories, thank you for that ;)

At level 10 I somehow made it to Hib Frontiers. I was thirsty for RvR so did a quick LFG and got in a group of lvl 50's. As we made it to Emain and went passed AMG there was a group of albs there that we engaged. A fire wizzy targetd me and 1 bolt later insta dead. It was about at least a month before I even tried to do Big Boy RvR again.

I healed Mistwraith and all I got was this stupid tee-shirt!

I was about level 26 on my Armsman when I found the Hib frontier. There were so many people pushing the milegate it was like a slideshow on my old Emachines. I remember I had just gotten a sword from Keltoi and was thinking oh yea I got this and got 2 rounded by a berserker. Came back and we managed to take nGed and wipe the mids, then the hibs came out with twice our numbers. This was my first real experience with MMO PvP coming from EQ, and I can say my heart has never pumped like it did the first year or so of RvR I played. I was just cannon fodder that first run out, but man I loved it.

Yggdra relic, I was I think lvl 18-20. Rumor spread that Albs are coming.. on my server relics has not been taken yet. SO it was kinda a big deal basically every person headed to defend. First it took a while to find the keep then standing inside for maybe 1-2 hours? lol We really had no clue. Albs pulled at some point and got absolutely owned by guards :)

Fun experience where I actually got to fight was getting cursed out for breaking a mezz with an AOE. I was not low level anymore.. we were near strength relic fighting a group of I think Albs, us being random mids who were around. There was a guy there playing 2 chars at the same time one being PAC healer and he had them CCed to hell an ready to be slaughtered and then I shit the bed.. :) Still we managed to kill a couple and rest got away, he was not amused. But he was a great guy actually, later one we spent a lot of time ganking hibs together. He had a great macro for everyone whom he invited to group, KILL THE FUCKING BARD DEAD, DEAD!!!! or something like that. There were couple good ones on hib at the time who knew how to kite with end regen and you had to off them fast or it was GG (mid had no end regen then).

Even though it sucked to be mezzed, the minstrel classes were really well done in DAOC (all 3 realms). Probably the best bards I've played in a MMO. Were they OP? Maybe they were, but man they were fun to play!
