New leveling system

Just an question and discussion on the subject leveling system.

The leveling system in the mmorpg is good. I don't have complains about it.

But could it be different?

1 - Leveling by regenaring mana and health. You will get experience each time you regenerate health or mana.

2 - Leveling by pure discovering. Everytime you discover something new you will get exp. (A new monster, a new city, a new weopen. etc)

3 - Leveling by using abilities. Each time you use an ability you will get exp.

4 - Leveling by time. The longer you play the game the higher your level will be.

Which one do you think can replace the standard leveling system?

Should you play a game with a leveling system as this?

Which one do you think is the best leveling sytem?

unfortunatelly imo most of the ways would end up in "exploits" - because unfortunatelly most of the players tends to "powerlevel" - doing not things which are most fun, but which give you most/fastest advancement

1 - Leveling by regenaring mana and health. You will get experience each time you regenerate health or mana.

this would mean that players would just sit in 1 place casting spells over and over and regening :)

2 - Leveling by pure discovering. Everytime you discover something new you will get exp. (A new monster, a new city, a new weopen. etc)

this actually somewhat already exist - in Haven & Hearth, but even there it is supplemented but other ways to progress, because you can hardly make enough content. I once played mud like this where it worked well, but it is a lot easier to make context in form of simple text.

3 - Leveling by using abilities. Each time you use an ability you will get exp.

people would find which ability give most exp and use it over and over on the weakest mob

4 - Leveling by time. The longer you play the game the higher your level will be.

thats something like EVE progression - it is not that bad, but takes away that feel of "today i had good day and advanced a lot"

personally i would prefer more or less "classic" sandbox skill progression by use

I prefer the leveling system where I dont notice I m gaining xp, but can feel the advancement over time.

am against the getting xp from using your abilities though - since I d like a game where you have to mirco manage your ressources abit, not just spamming buttons as fast as possible.

@ benedikt and everquest 2 have XP from discoveries/ first time killed nameds as well : )

If option 1 only has health regen. It would be more stable I agree.
