EDIT: There would be too many negative consequences to limiting communication in-game. For one, it would just give too huge of an advantage to people who communicate outside of the game... Damn.
Just thought I'd start a discussion on some ideas about what would make RvR better. This is just a nugget of an idea that just popped into my head:
I never quite liked the idea of global chat in an mmo especially in a medieval/fantasy setting. If you're half-way across the world, should you be able to so easily communicate with guild mates or others in general? It actually encourages people to physically isolate themselves (in the game world), if you think about it, since you have this super convenient way of communicating no matter where you're at. What would happen if you throw those conveniences out the window and require people to actually be within shouting distance of each other to be able to communicate? I think there would be a sea change in that people will actually come together and cooperate more willingly against this scary world of no global communcation. This might be too draconian, but there might be exceptions to the "no global" communication rule by allowing players to communicate with other players by way of pigeon or something. I just think a medieval/fantasy world without the modern conveniences we've grown so accustomed to would be a pretty fascinating trip.
This would make large scale warfare more immersive in that, as the General, you will really have to depend on scouts to be your eyes and ears out there.

I just don't like the idea of limiting communication. Also aside from vent players could set up an ICQ to essentially get info out to the masses. It wouldn't be hard for a server to set up an out of game global chat.
edit again I think you would just be hurting less organized realms and newer players.

But Vent makes this less realistic from a design standpoint, even if it would still affect the game marginally.
On a side note: I HATE vent so much. Does so much to ruin immersion and make it feel like anything but a RPG.
So I guess I don't know where I stand on this. I guess I would rather be more immersed by no global in the field and let guilds/vent friends enjoy an advantage. It.s just a game, after all.

Not true, community teamspeaks are becoming the norm in games like gw2. I'd be surprised if that trend doesn't follow them into CU. I don't see an issue with global chat myself.... kinda silly to cripple those not in voice comms even more than they already are. I like maps as well... but I wouldn't mind not having them. It took effort to learn the old frontiers of daoc, and I can see why people would like to go back to that. If they do have maps though, the whole nerfed radar thing shouldn't be put in game (flames on keeps under attack and icons showing large battles).
I agree with you. Though it would be ideal to limit communication for everybody, this would give those who use Team Speak and the like TOO HUGE of an advantage over those who don't. This would be a bad idea. Blast Team Speak!
