I used to play only female characters in EQ2, LOTRO, Rift and other MMOs, but in SWTOR I prefer much more to play males. So far 14 of my 18 characters on The Ebon Hawk are males LOL. I think it really depends from the game I play. My male characters in SWTOR seem to be much more powerful and I immerse in story much deeper with them then my females. Though I really enjoy my Chiss female marauder, but she is exceptional
I read other posters with more or less the same feelings as mine.
I'd like to vote but I can't.
I mainly play male avatars but in the case that the armour looks better on a female avatar I'll roll that one.
Or if it "fits" slightly better for me. E.g. I don't roll bulky casters/scouts, so I go for any race/gender that has a leaner look if I want to play a caster/stealth char.
In a real RPG setting you could play whichever gender you want although in the way back day if you played the opposite gender you were open to alot of remarks but times these days have changed.
I have a penis, therefore, I play a male character.
The characters I create are an extension of myself. I never understood how guys play girls, or girls play guys and not think anything of it. I guess it's the same people that don't care what their character's names are, or how those names are a reflection of how others view them in game.
Yet you call yourself a roleplayer.
The last character I would want to play would be a version of myself. I get to play that all day every day.
What makes RPG's so appealing is being able to step into the skin of someone else. Different gender, race, species etc.
Honestly it varies greatly on the game. I do have a tendency as of lately to play female characters though its greatly dependant on the actual look of the characters in game. Rift for example I'm pretty much exclusively female due to the fact that I just feel the male characters look so 'meh'. Tera I gravitate towards female again (shock there right!) though my favorite class 'ellin' is less for the fact its a female as it is its the fact its a little ball of kick ass compared to the other little race which is WAY to fury to my liking. Given a male option as ellin, I would maybe lean at that, all depending in the end if I can work enough on the ears/tail to be more minimal. Games like planetside 2 I rolled a male due to looking better to me.
It just depends heavily on the race and how each gender looks. There haven't been to many games that have really sparked me playing a good mix since Ragnarok Online which I played gender heavily influenced on what 2nd class/trans class looked like (Sprites looking different between gender a lot in terms of clothing style)
Personally...I play male characters 100% of the time. I have never played any game that requires me to be a female character. I would have loved to have played tomb raider, but I cannot get into playing a gender that doesn't represent me.

not sure how its hard to "roleplay" another gender.. what if the game offers no human races are you unable to play those because you can't "identify" yourself with the character?
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. 99% of the time, I play male, because I roleplay, and as a male IRL, I just can't pull off roleplaying a female. I've tried, and it comes off as cliche and slightly creepy, since more often than not, someone eventually proposes cybersex. I don't usually judge other people by what gender they choose to play as, but I do judge them on their rationalizations for it. Any time someone explains it away by saying they would rather look at a sexy ass as they play, I just shake my head and laugh. I've never been sexually motivated by game characters. And besides, I'm too busy scanning for threats in the world around me as I move through the game world to be staring at my character's butt.
It's kinda funny how freudian these types of threads get. You start learning a lot about your fellow gamers, despite their own attempts to obfuscate what's really going on.
Edited to add-- For games that force you into playing a female, i.e. Tomb Raider or The Longest Journey, it's different. Usually, they're of the action or adventure variety, and I see the PC as simply my interface into the game world and the vehicle through which the story is told. I don't identify with the character on any deeper level, other than to understand their specific role in the story, and how best to approach in-game situations.

Admittedly female characters offer more appearance options in todays' games. If you like to try a lot of different outfits then female is the way to go. And no, I don't have "bikini mail" in mind...
Same. My mains are usually males, and the few characters I rp'ing with are males too (though I played once a female back in the p'n'p days... it was a bit strange, but a good play and a good character)
Besides that, as an altoholic I have a truckload of alts in the many games I play / played, with a ratio of about 60% male - 40% female toons. Especially in LotRO or TSW where lots of cosmetic outfits exist in game, and many of them are gender-locked, so if you want to hoard... I mean collect ( ) everything, you need toons from both gender. And their inventory space.
"Bikini mail, what the hell is bikini mail? -Oh, only the very best armour you can wear. Here's a picture of it." Love Dorkness rising and after this scene, when Gary says he'll play a sorceress:
"-Dude, you're hot? -17 charisma. -Wanna have sex? -Totally. -Awesome! I seduce him...her. <rolls> Yeah! I can seduce any homophobe with that roll..." Lol.

Oh not at all.
You are assuming that a character has to be an extension of one's self as opposed to an "acted character".
To that point, in theater, there are many straight people of both sexes who play characters of the opposite sex or characters that are homosexual.
Of course, there is a prevalence for people with alternate lifestyles in the arts but it might also be that people are more comfortable being more open about their lifestyle in those professions and therefore it "seems" that is the case. I can't say for sure but I can say I've met many people who are straight (myself included), in the arts and they have no problem or at least are very professional, about acting different types of people.
In addition, there was a time in western culture, where women weren't allowed to act in theater so roles had to be acted by men. Even today, to keep authenticity, there are plays and operas that utilize people playing opposite genders.

I don't really get why Males play female characters..
Are you that insecure about your posible gayness that you HAVE to stare at a female pixxel ass in order to feel confident about yourselves?
As i always play a tank/melee class i want them to look badass with that heavy armor so i alway play male. Also because i am a male. i jsut never roll anything with mana:P
Even before i clicked on the topic i knew someone will be judging people and question their sexuality based on what gender they chose to play in an online game.
How playing a huge sword weilding chisled tough guy is different than playing a female character? neither of those avatars represent you in real life any ways.

Serious question. But do you wear a hazmat suit 24/7 so you don't touch yourself?Because I see the male characters I play in online games as a representation of myself to add to the immersion. In single player it doesn't bother me because I'm playing the character of some one else's story and not chatting to others on a personal level.Insecurities aside. I see those who play female characters as a representation for themselves in online games like they feel they should have been born a woman on a subconscious level. There should really be a professionally done psychological study for this phenomenon. It would be an interesting read.
It depends how you see the character you play. If you see yourself as them then it's fine if men play men I guess. If you see them as an actor in a movie/story you are watching (my case) then men playing women is fine.
From my experience kids, newbies and RPers usually fall into the first category. Experienced MMO players / hardcore players / PvPers fall into the second.
The difference is. The 'characters' you 'play' are serving as avatars of yourself when speaking to others online.
Huh? is that some of kind rule you picked from 'guide to how to play MMOS'? who says the characters we play are serving as avatrs of ourselves?

I think this topic in general has more to do with the general homophobic nature of most players. Personally I don't give a damn if someone plays male or female.
About latent homosexual feelings... I'm as straight as you can get it (married, have a son - yeah I know, good cover ^^) , but I prefer to look a nice (pixeled) chichs ass over that of a male :-D
LOL. Thats my thinking to. I play games a lot, would I prefer to look at a males or females ass all day?
I tend to look where I am going or in PVP i use as wide a shot as I can muster, I can't really think of a time I stared at a pixelated ass.

This ass thing got me thinking about where my eyes are actually looking while I play MMORPGs. I think I very rarely actually look at my avatar at all. Perhaps if I get a new model of armor, but while actually playing, I'm always looking either at some UI element or managing positioning and targeting in the main field of view.
1. I prefer to look at a female avatar. Its not because I'm a pervert, its because I like chicks and staring at a guys butt is just not right. I like to play a Castanic female in Tera for an hour and then piledrive the wife. She likes it too. She would rather I stare at a chick than a half naked man.
2. If I have my wife talk on teamspeak and people think I am a real girl, I get lots of gifts and never have an issue finding mates to group with.
3. Clothing options are way more cool on females. Check out Tera to see what I mean.
Nuff said.

I always pick races and genders at random. No option in the poll to choose "Play Both Genders" though so I voted "Don't know the difference" as none of the other choices fit. In some games you have to choose a gender as some classes are gender-specific.
I know some females that play male characters because of unwanted attention they get if people know that they are female in real life. I'm just waiting for the day when this roles reversed ...
