All of the games you mentioned are better geared for teenagers and if you want a complex, deep and rich game with ALOT of backstory, then try eve. Go to their website and read some of the lore why dont you and try the free trial. Good luck!

EVE a complex, and deep game? oh please, be quiete. EvE's backstory is a JOKE compared to World of Warcraft's. and if you take a look at his post, you see he is about to get into MMORPG's. nobody with even a small knowlege of mmorpg would recommend EVE to a beginner.and trust me, eve is also geared toward teenagers.close to every mmorpg is based on teenagers. sure the game might have more adults playing, but that does not mean the game's target are adults. damn, EVE fanboys are even more annoying then Guild Wars/ WoW fanboys.

anyway to the op: out of those 3, i would pick World of Warcraft if your a beginner to mmorpg. one that isn't in your list but would also be great for starting is City of Heroes (or City of villains, which you prefer)

The fact that you claim that eve isnt for beginners while wow is only furthers my point. Thank you.

For the OP, if you are into PvP then i suggest you play the only real PvP game on the mmo market today, eve online.

eve the only real pvp game hahahaha, this guy is funny

Anyone else wish this site would filter out the word "Best"?  Any time you try to use it you just see **** or $&@!.  Make everyone rewrite their post and use words like favorite.

Or better yet make every post that has the word "Best" in it to also include "In my opinion".

I went into futureshop the other day and they are still selling EnB time cards for some reason lol image

Guess they didnt get the news

WoW is the best choice of all of them you listed.

Also considering you say you are getting into mmo i assume you are new to the genre and wow is very very friendly to new players to the genre. Thus its great success.

I would definately rate mmorpg like UO,EQ1 and DAoC much higher then world of warcraft but its still a good mmorpg espically for first timers.

You're making a joke, right? I'm sure you meant to insert /sarcasm tags but just forgot. Please tell me I'm right! I didn't much care for Eve either, but I do know a lot of people who think it's wonderful. Well, maybe not a lot of people... ok, ok... some drunk guy named Colin who tried to pick me up in a pub! You would think by this site that there are eleventy one bajillion rabid EVE fans running around so it must be the best, but I've noticed there are only a few... they just drop the name in every forum they post in. Oh well....

I didn't notice any great story arcs or lore in GW, but then I became bored pretty quickly. The bits of story and the lore I did notice seemed pretty dreadful to me. Some of the PvP is ok.

FFXI, while it has a decent story line, I found the game itself frustrating. They seem to make the simplest things overly complex and it's very, very, VERY solo unfriendly. Life is just too short to spend that much of it trying to find a group or grouping with dumbasses... which there are a ton of in FFXI. PvP can be fun.

WoW is good fun and, contrary to what some people say, all the Warcraft series have a pretty rich storyline and a LOT of lore, which is important to me. Unfortunately, they don't move it along properly and it's easy to ignore. Of course since there are gazillions of people, there are lots of dumbasses but you can usually find a good group and guild to hang out with. PvP is also pretty "meh" , in my opinion, but then, I was spoiled by SB PvP... too bad about the rest of the game, though. WoW is solo friendly but it only took me a couple of months or so to become rather bored of the content. It runs well, though, and is not demanding on your computer so even raids are relatively lag-free.

I'm pretty fickle with games so a few months is pretty good for me. A lot of them, like WoW, don't last me very long as, even paying attention to the story line, you max out level wise fairly quickly and with little effort.

Out of the games you listed i would pick guild wars. Some might say its not a real mmo. Ok thats fine but its still a damn good game. I liked it much better then WoW. Although WoW is a good MMO as well. Havent played FFXI so i cant really say much about it

If you're looking for storyline and character development, FFXI beats the other two, hands down.

Be forewarned, storyline and character development (meaning personality, not levelling) are not, by their nature, a strongpoint of *any* MMO. Even FFXI is not going to deliver bucketloads. But it is much better than the other two.

unless they changed it or story comes much later, ffxi didn't have any of that when i played it.

of all the mmorpgs i have played, wow has the msot story behind the quests and gameplay.

Then, honestly, you must not have looked very hard. The strained relations of the humes and the
Galka, the fate of Zeid and Sir Raogrimm, the secret of the digging of the Palbourough Mines, the
political intrigue in San d'Oria, the rogue cardians of Windurst, the threatened return of the Shadow
Lord, the sad tale of Cid's past sins and more...I've seen all this and more and I'm not past level 30
yet. I've only just opened the Promathia storyline and haven't seen any of Zilart yet.

i played it when it was 1st released and i don't recall doing any quests that actually had a overall storyline. i canceled when my 30 free days were up because i hated the game. they must have added that stuff after that.

Nope, you just couldn't be bothered to do your missions, or your quests. They don't walk up and slap you in the face like they do in WoW; you don't get the big shiny arrows saying "Quest here!" You actually have to go out and talk to the NPCs. FFXI actually expects you to figure things out. The entire Shadow Lord story line was available when FFXI released in NA, as were most of the quest storylines I mentioned, and Rise of the Zilart came bundled with the initial NA release.

I liked FFXI's storyline.  It's broken down into the rank missions which a lot of people don't get into until around level 30.   Then everyone wants to get rank 5 to get an airship pass.  The COP storyline is even better if you can actually find a skilled party to do them.

It's too bad that 90% of new players want to do nothing but xp grind.  It seems very rare to find players in the game who actually want to explore and do quests.

As for the WoW storyline...  I went from level 0-60 w/o seeing any hint of a storyline.  Quests just seem to be scattered around the world w/o any real relevance or connection to eachother.

If you're wanting to jump right in and have fun WoW would probably be better for you.  If you want to spend more time and have more fun in the long run i'd go with FFXI.  You'll cap your character in WoW pretty quickly and then be reduced to PvP and raids.  It's absolutely impossible to do everything FFXI has to offer.  The end game is vast and they update it more than enough to keep the game going for years to come.

I personally prefer FFXI,  but i'll admit i did enjoy the 0-60 part of WoW.  I'd probably still be playing it if the cap was a lot higher.  As for Guild Wars...  well i'll just say it's not my cup of tea.

wow, you must have been smoking crack the whole time you played the game...i guess the multi-part quests had no story or reason for doing them, right? one quest has you going all over the place to find a murderer. there's a whole background story behind it too.

As an old fart I would recommend WoW for fun and a not too difficult start.  I really enjoyed it for a few months and felt immersed enough in the game to care about my character and for those around me.

I notice Eve getting lots of flames around here and even though I have been playing it for two and half years, I wouldn't recommend it for a new player.  You need to find what sort of role you enjoy in a game first and then look for a game that will give you that.  With so many what look like good games coming out I am sure you will find something to fulfil you (I have been looking at POBS and DnL for a while).

For the love of god Ashkent,  stick to the WoW forums.  If anyone says anything negative about your precious game you freak out.  Out of all the posters,  your name is the only one that sticks out because of your immature stance on anything and everything but WoW.  Yes it is a good game,  but it's not perfect, and it's not everone's favorite game.

hey, guess what? i don't play WoW! holy fuggin shite, huh? i quit because i didn't like what it turned into post 60.

i never said it was perfect, if you actually read any posts i made about it, you would see how i really feel about it.

its a very good game never the less. better than boring so-called game, EVE.

see, even though i don't play it or really care for it anymore, i have the ability to appreciate a good game. as for you, you can't see past anything that someone in a forum tells you about a game.

  • spineshankspineshank Member Posts: 106

Thanks for reminding me Ashkent.  I forgot to mention it in my previous post.  Eve is a very good game also if you can't get into FFXI, WoW, or Guild Wars.  It is very accessible to new players.  However be warned,  the word "Eve" is considered a curse word to some people on this forum.  The game being number one in the rankings causes them to lose sleep.  They feel the need to bash the game any time they get a chance.  It's not my favorite MMO,  but it's definately worth a shot.  (more than the 2 week trial which so many seem to base their opinions on)

As for not being able to see anything past forum poster's opinions...  my favorite game is FFXI.  Which, according to 90% of the people on this forum, is one of the worst mmos around.

There is no best MMORPG, only favorites.

  • AshkentAshkent Member Posts: 772

i don't think the rankings cause anyone to lose sleep because we all know they are either screwed up or padded.

no we just feel the need to warn people before they try it, just like you guys feel the need to promote it in every single thread.

because we all know EVE can cure aids and cancer, end starvation worldwide, bring peace to the middle east and get michal jackson to stop molesting little kids.

mmorpg.com forum poster: guys, i won't be posting for awhile because my family was butally murdered by a psychotic gang of satanist clowns, after that, some kids beat my dog to death with baseball bats, and then i was raped by by this big old ugly fat guy at the gym.

EVEroxorztheboatzorz: hey man, i really feel......like you should try Eve. i'm sure if you played it, it would make you feel better. did you know they have over 70,000 subscribers and they even had 17,000 concurrent users on one day out of the many years its been around?

mmorpg.com forum poster: *pulls out a gun and shoots himself*

hmm...i wonder if i can make that into a sig....?
