Originally posted by shaeI think SOE has always been very smart with what they do with SWG. They've managed to completely brutalize the game that could have been to it's current state and yet still keep a very large player base, this has happened for the very simple reason is that it's star wars. They know people will stay because it's quite simply the only option out there if you want to be in a persistent SW world, they know this, they've used this and they will continue use because it works.
So this doesnt have to do with SOE being smart. It's just that they have the money to keep the licence to use the name. A better, more organized and planned Star Wars mmorpg would really rock and top all the charts. Wake up, George Lucas!
Your kidding me right ? They have single handedly managed to keep players over 2 years with a steady population in a game thats is as horrid as it is by lying, theiving, stringing players along, false promisses and massive PR blitzes. I'm sorry but as far as business goes, they've done their job. Now I'm certainly not defending them, nor am I saying it has been a positive experience for hardcore fans but when it comes down to it, SOE has made money, lots of money at many players expences and they will continue to do so off this game for a very long time, regardless of how they treat people or how they treat the game.
Come on man, they have handled the game very very badly. The SW setting is a very popular one and they could have made much more money from it. Dont forget that before CU1 they made a big investment in developers and staff, and this expenditure only resulted in cutting the player base to half. Steady population? Now YOU are kidding me...
Oh Don't get me wrong, I completely with you, had they listened to their hardcore fanbase from beta, and listened to the general player base throught the first year of release SWG would have been MUCH more succesful then what I think we see now.
Instead we saw very large sub numbers on release, close to around 500k or so and then a general fall over the next 6 months to anywhere between 200k to 250k, which it has pretty much stayed close to ever since. There's lots of press releases stating that as fact, gamspot, ign and others have all pretty much said the same in recent releases, whether that true or not, well thats up to you to buy or not.
I tend to think the numbers are fairly accurate, but again I completely agree with you, had it not been for the direction they took, SWG would have done so much better, my point is that what SOE has done with such a mess has been pretty amazing, if you don't count in the under handedness of it all and at the expense of their playing public.
I think the game will be around for a while now. I think the changes are going to KILL the vet players off and SOE is taken a HUGE gamble that they will pick up new customers with Xbox 360. I am sure they will get a new breed of people in the game and this might go on for a while, but one thing that is hard to pass up with SOE, is the very poor customer service they have and the lies that they tell people to het them to buy thier expantions. It's to bad that they have done this but only time will tell what happen with this game.
Been there done that: Asherons Call,SWG,AOC,D&D,COH,Anarchy Online,DAOC,EVE,Guild Wars,LOTRO,POTBS,WAR,WW2, and Rift
The name alone can carry this game on for a couple of months, even years. However, they will realise - sooner or later - that it is way behind the potential of the star wars lable. Therefore, they will probably start to develop a new Star Wars MMO or completly redesign the current game (which they are already trying). By this ywill probably loose many veterans, but potentially find a lot of new players, as well.
I answered '3'. Not because I agree with SOE's changes, in fact most of them I don't at this time. But essentially what they have done is create an...entirely...new...game. People are going to come in droves to see it, and play it, and it WILL extend the life of the game in general. I disagree with their methods of accomplishing this, but I can't ignore the impact.
until they release it half finished, and do dick about fixing it until they can come up with another "groundbreaking" game system that they will release half finished.
oh i did forget about them making jedi a starting profession. funny. tiggs said in her "questions answered by the devs" thread that ALL players have asked for everything they are putting into the NGE. call me crazy but seriously i can't remember one time where any player has asked them to make jedi a starting profession. are they finally going to change the name of the game to JEDI WARS with the NGE also?
and wepps.. the SOE brownnosers said the exact same thing when the first CU was released. ohhh there will be an influx of tons of players they said.... well oddly enough thanks to episode 3 and some fanboi advertising they did have an influx of players after the first CU. just enough to cover the players that canceled. now i would very much like to hear your reasoning that this system will in some way bring in enough players to count as more than a drop in the bucket. i'm sorry it just seems like these days SOE is just living from paycheck to paycheck (expansion to expansion) with SWG. the game's days are numbered, and no amount of expansions or game enhancments will change it's fate. personally for me the game was dead already back at the jedi revamp. have fun until they pull the plug man.
If you hate the game so much why are you still posting on the thread. You obviously like it enough to post. I know if I hated a game I wouldnt waste my valuable time posting about it. Jedi isnt a starting profession either. Force Sensitive is. I think it should be. How many people in the movies killed bols and other stuff to get FS? Now how many FS in the movies were born that way. You want SW then you should want FS as a starting profession since that would be more realistic than grinding/questing for it.

Okay now ive heard from post that its coming on PS3 and now Xbox360. Where is the official information on all of this? Are you sure all this isnt a rumor? Another thing. Ive been through 2 expansions now and I dont know what lies your talking about. Can you be more specific so your opinion can carry some wait? Maybe show me proof of their lies with some hardcore evidence. This goes for the rest of you people downing SOE. Can you supply hard evidence for us all that dont see these lies you are talking about?
i can see this game lasting to mid 2006 end 2006 untill they have to .... hav.... sorry its hard for me to say pull the game but i bet lucasarts has a second one in the works that wont be made buy S.O.E i am all so pre-cu played for a good year before the combat upgread witch i liked after a bit respeced to swordsmen/tka/fencer stop for a bit cause i wanted to go back to pistooler/smuggler but could not
Originally posted by Ulfar Its been said by others but it need saying again. You are playing to beta test a console game. When it is released on PS3 and Xbox360 the PC game will disappear. This is why they are giving away all this stuff. Once the game is stable enough it will be released onto the consoles.
Im not calling you a liar....yet. I need hard evidence to back up your claims. No one has provided that. I dont believe everything I read on the forums because I know alot of things are just rumors that got out of control.
I strongly doubt the PC game would "dissapear" as long as there is a market for it on the PC. Having said that, they could close it down if they wantede to at any time and no one could do anything about it.

You really think that they will keep to different versions of the game running.
They are giving away expansions and dumbing the game down. PC player numbers are falling badly.
The signs are there and clinging to the hope they will stay with the PC wont do you any good. You may be right they may keep SWG on the PC but I doubt it. Apart from anything else PC players have an advantage in this sort of game in that they have a keyboard + mouse and having everyone play on the same servers would give them an unfair advantage.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 are all about conquering the online games community and what better way then to have a half decent online Star Wars game that is only available on consoles. This in itself would help to shift more consoles which Sony and Microsoft would love.
The eastern market alone for SWG galaxies on the PS3 is potentially huge.

You dont have access to the subscription logs so you cant accurately say the membership base in SWG is dropping. Alot of people talked trash and said they would quit before every major change but I seen those same people in the game afterwards so you cant base your numbers off forums. You still havent showed me proof that they are even putting this game on console. As far as im concerned it just a nasty rumor.
Originally posted by vladrac I just tryed the new enhancments on Test Center, and it's definitly bringing me back, it is sooooooooooo much funner now, combat is excellent, and the proffessions are excellent, the quests are fun and engaging. I am so happy, i played SWG for over a year, and left after the CU, but this CU will definitly bring me back.
No, thats wrong. They have created a new way to grind and level characters on top of a flawed game. It isn't an entirely new game. It's the same buggy, laggy, unimpressive mess it always was but instead of being open ended to be what you want to be in the world, now your pigeon holed into classes.
This is the last gasp of a dying MMO. It's no different then the AC2 expansion that tried to save the game.
The faster they kill it, the sooner it could be rebuilt from the ground up to be the game we all wanted.

Thankyou. I had to see it with my own two eyes. If your a long time veteran of the forums you understand how you cant believe everything you see and how something small can be spun over a course of a week into what people believe to be facts.

What a horrible fate for a MMOG, to die a miserable death on the shallow console systems.
If LucasArts can make more money by going console with SWG, good for them.
I happen to be a vet of SWG and I'm not going back to it, regardless what others say about
vets going back in droves to play it.
I learned my lesson: SOE will always be SOE, LA will always be LA and SWG will always SUCK!
