Well I haven't really played any free MMOs but Knight Online seems to be the more popular one, worth checking out if you haven't already.
---------------------------------- MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.

I'd really like to get GW, me being a poor college student and all I don't really feel like shoving out $50 for it atm. I don't think it's going to fulfill an MMO craving though.

I've been playing a bit of Knight Online and for being free it is quite nice. Tho, once you get to about lvl 30 it starts to get boring unless you have friends to group up with. Also, the economy in the game is really strange, it is hard to get enough cash to get equipment unless you like to grind for endless hours.
Another game I could vouche for that is free is Anarchy Online, played it for some time ago and it can worth spending some time playing. Playing the basic game is free while there is also a version with monthly fee.
Flyff might be fun since it's kinda new and it seems interesting. I got bored pretty quick though, too many kidz shouting noob and keep arguing who's the best and this and that is better than the other, while hitting pink mushrooms to cartoon noises, but many like it and so might you
And I think the game ROSE online is released soon, you could try it. Also Settlers of Ganareth will be free, it's like a pre-game to Dark and Light which is very popular, so it might be fun.

nonono, its "if you don't like it, your a kid who should go back to WoW, because EVE is for mature people!111!"
I think to get you started, Runescape is a good free to play option it's always really busy and it's very easy to get started. I wouldn't recommend playing it for a long time tho, probably something like EVE would be the next step to take.

can we stop with the eve arguments already? even if you are just kidding, i'm tired of seeing it
usually good and free don't go well together. at least i haven't found a game where those criteria have been met.
I'd have to agree with the people who said Anarchy Online. That's probably your best bet. If you like Asian-style games, Silk Road Online and Ferentus aren't too bad either.

I would say Silk Road Online atm. I just started playing it recently and it's been fun. There are definately parts lacking but its a free beta. It runs more smoothly than 90% of the "finished" MMORPGs and will likely even improve. The graphics are a beautiful blend of realism and mythical. Not only do I see enough potential to the point where I would consider buying it once all the features are implemented, it's still a blast to play in it's current state...
If you are looking for a nice easy and relaxed mmo thats free try ROSE online theres nothing speical about it but its fun when you know that your not paying anything for it....
well... free.... I played Knight Online once, but it just wont run well on my computer. I know a lot of people who play Mu Online, I played it for like a week, its pretty good actually. They say its a Diablo 2 clone though.
Believe it or not I would recommend Runescape as a free starter MMO.
The game doesn't need a fast PC to run, just a simple java client, it also runs under Linux, making it one of the few cross-platform games available. I played it upwards of a year, although to get the most out of it you have to shell out $5 a month, which unlocks the rest of the game. It does have its faults. Being java it lacks the graphics or surround sound of DX based games. The number of players online at any given time are usually beyond a hundred thousand, but the servers are pretty fast. Updates are frequent every week without fail, so you'll rarely ever get bored with it.
