Divergence Online

I've been checking out these forums, seeing a lot of discussions (even a sticky) about sandboxes vs. themeparks, or even combining the both.

Personally I don't know what to think of it, I havent found an MMORPG that has really caught my interest since Asheron's Call was in it's good old days. Lord knows they could've kept that one going, had they not introduced some of the crap they did with expansions, though I wont lie their first  expansion was pretty nice.

Anyway the point is I've recently seen this MMO, maybe some of you remember it but it's been a long time since the guy has really said a word of the project. Hopefully he picks up steam cause I do like the sound of it. I understand the promises he makes are huge but it seems like the direction is right and he's held up to what he has said so far, not trying to make a pity case for the previous mistakes of the undertaking of the project.

Here's the indiegogo page : http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/divergence-online?c=home

But I really hope you check out the youtube videos on there as well as this guy :

The reason I say to check that second one out is cause Larzul I feel isn't someone who is easily fooled by hollow promises often given by indie developers (One can remember Darkfall or Mortal Online).

I'm not saying to throw your money, but definitley keep an eye on this if you think you might enjoy a survival-type sandbox MMO, which in my opinion has one of the most unique stories and races I have seen in a long time.

If you want to join the forums, they actually just opened up I hope to see you guys there!

Definitely excited to see this project grow and eventually become reality. It's a big project, and i hope it gets the publicity it deserves.

This project gives me hope that the mmo genre will move to a more 'horizontal progression' playstyle that doesn't require days of grinding just to catch up to your friends who started before you did, or to get to the more awesome areas in the world. I've seen some evidence of this elsewhere too, so I'm filled with joy that more mmos like this surface. Definitely keeping a close eye on this.

What do you mean by horizontal progression?

What do you mean by horizontal progression?

A game where it is more about skill in playing and how you tailor your character but your character would not be more powerful than a set level, say twice as powerful as a noob player's character in raw power terms, skill makes you able to use that power better and ergo kick noob asses even when outnumbered 3-4 to one but if you aren't that good the noobs win. Basically a game where you don't get much, if any, power creep and the emphasis is more on player interactions.

In the videos of the game that I could find, I didn't find mention of it being primarily horizontal gameplay.  It seemed liklier that as you progress in the game you will go through substantial vertical progression.  The AI species, for instance, can inhabit huge combat type robot shells at a high upkeep cost of some sort.  (High upkeep/high cost > late game availability)

It would seem that a geared out, late game, individual would stand a much greater chance to win in a fight than someone in starting gear.

That is not to say that being skilled won't also be very important.  If an uber geared-out nub can't even hit his target, he's pretty doomed.

The style appears to be fps(third person too)mmorpg survival game.  I hope it gets the funding to make it happen.

I watched the first video and it basically told me nothing at all.It was just an advertisement all about money or lack of.

If you are going to try and sel la concept, there needs to be soem real evidence the game will be as mentioned in the video....nothing more than a clone, only perhaps a cheaper clone.

I can say this much without any doubt what so ever, you cannot make a sci fi/space type game without a ton of staff and money.Well not a good one that is,anyone can make a mass of game space and dot in some objects and models.

The problem is that Space games need not only a game that resides in Space ,but also one that resides on planets, otherwise it will just be a cheap version of either or.

IMO only a giant developer should even attempt it,there is no way i would buy into an indie developer making a good solid ,in depth sci/fi or Space game, just no way could i ever be convinced.

Nobody is going to chime in on the big developers unless they can produce PhysX properties, destructible surfaces, various weaponry aside from the bland melee/ranged and magic. In depth systems and games shoudl have MANY,this alone needs it's own set of tools and tons of perameters and lots fo work.

You also can't expect a well designed game from anything speed tree or a copy of.You need to hand place and design every inch of a map for a REASON other than to just make land mass or null space.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

    Uh ohhh

Anyone who noticed our old listing on MMORPG.com will recognize why we gave up on there initially. Back in the day it was the nexus of all trolldom and just took too much to combat to make it worth it.

However it does happened to be a place where an insane number of individuals go to read up on upcoming MMORPGs so in the interest of doing what's right for the project, I've been in touch with their staff and got the project brought back "online" with them.

What helps these games a lot is if people go to your listing and "hype" the project up, once it reaches a certain amount it lists it on the front page. That's a huge help! So what I'm asking people to do from the deepest section of my guts, maybe the sub-cockel region, is to there as soon as they can and "hype" the game up. We need to get it to around 8.3 I think to make it only the listing and it's already at 7.9, so there isn't far to go! Also if if wouldn't be too much to ask simply making a post in their general forums area.

How much you want to bet this game turns into a PvP focused MMO?

Where is the PvE in this game, and how will it be done so that its fun to pug and not forced to only play with people we know or guild/alliances?

I cant but help to think about how PvE in Darkfall turned out. Fun game, but the PvP focus ruined the PvE game community to the point that all PvE was done in guild group, or in secret so PvP ganker trolls couldnt interrupt the fun.

This game if it has no/limited control on the PvP will spawn massive ammount of PvP trollers that will ruin this game for everybody like Darkfall's PvP trolls did. It really upsets me, because the concept in both this and Darkfall would have been more fun if they had limited the pvP rule set or offered Server ruleset options.

I dont hate PvP. But I dont like FFA nor Full Loot or any looting. Gear damage from PvE I dont mind, but not from PvP. It just leaves too much power in troll's hands to exploit and make the community bad.

When the community get like that, the community loses trust with each other. Imagine a MMO like WoW if it had community like this which doesnt trust each other with anything. Nobody would group together other than guilds. People tend to call them elitist who do that.

Hopefully the developers really focus on understanding how important PvE is in a Sandbox. I am tired of Open World Arenas, calling themselves sandbox MMOs.

How about having a server with Faction PvP instead of FFA? didnt SWG have factions for PvP? Whats wrong with trying this idea on a seperate server?

Being heavily pvp doesn't influence whether or not a game is a sandbox mmo.  If you want to play a game that doesn't have the constant risk of pvp, look elsewhere.

I understand where you're coming from. The idea of the constant threat of pvp isn't for everyone, and I get why people would want PvE in a game like this. I'm sure there will be PvE in the form of missions, a storyline, and probably creatures and npc enemies in the wild for you to fight and watch out for. If there wasn't the game would be too slow paced, only seeing action when you find other people to fight. And with the threat of perma death, people aren't ALWAYS going to fight you. I'm nearly positive they will be implementing PvE into the game, but as it IS still in pre alpha, giving out information on their part is a double edged sword. The real emphasis on maximum player freedom is a very nice concept, and requires a playerbase that can be more mature than your typical COD gamer, so to speak. It will be up to the community to find their own way in the game, and make their own guidelines and rules for how they treat each other. Personally, I think just being patient and following the development will lead to more answers as the game continues to grow and develop. :)
