Given that there seem to be dozens of (what look like) good mmorpgs out there, how does one choose?
I'm looking for a game that's no more than an hour or two a day, and wouldn't be ruined if I skipped 2-3 days now and then. I'd prefer a game where I can play on my own, OR in a group and am not forced to one or the other. I also like the idea of having a choice between PvP or not.
My other question is about length a game is running. Is there any problem with joining a game where some players have been playing for a couple years? Do you still have a reasonable chance to grow into the game? Does that even matter, or is it a reason to go look for a newer/beta game?
Having visited about 30 websites, here's the list I've come up with. If there's agame that should be considered, please post it. Otherwise, please give an opinion on any of the games in here.
Personally I've played only the more text based mmo games like Earth 2025 which I enjoy but is just getting too boring. I don't need amazing graphics, but am looking for a challenging game with some type of guild/organization available in game. But the game can't force that so it has to have good features for solo play.
Thanks for your opinions!

Well I'll post what I know.
DAOC - they came out with new servers not too long ago so you shouldn't have much trouble with the catch-up game, as for it being casaul I don't know.
Guild Wars - Within a month or two you'll be equal to anyone who's been playing since release, endgame is more like an FPS than an RPG, which by that I mean you'll be having arena matches instead of having to continiously build your character to keep up.

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
i'll get it out of the way already....tried EVE? there, so now no one else can ask about it!
well, world of warcraft might work for you. you can easily advance on just an hour or 2 a day and if you miss a few days, most likely nothing will change. you can solo very easily or group if you want to. to do most instances you need to group though. after you hit 60, its all either grinding or group raiding.
As much as I hate to say it as I personally don't really like it; I'm not biased. I can recommend you World of Warcraft.
I know, happened to me too and now i'm forced to 'like' it.

It sounds like WoW was designed for you.
Ignore the elitist self proclaimed "Hardcore" types and give it a try.
If you find it a bit easy then try EQ2. Tougher world and tougher crafting.
On the other hand, if WoW is still a bit too serious, then try City of Heroes.
Good fun and no need to camp for gear
I'll check out WoW. Seems to be a repeat suggestion.
I don't mind paying a monthly fee, but don't want to if I don't have to. Any of the free games worth it, or do you 'get what you pay for'?
The following looked like they were free: Blademistress, Guild Wars, Irth Online, Kingdom of Drakkar, Magiknights, Runescape. Do they just charge after a while/pay for decent gameplay, or are free games really free?
I would stay away from runescape if i were you.... I have never even played it but i know people who have and from watching them it looked terrible.
How do you choose? you don't buy a game that you haven't played. If you can't get a free trial, find a friend that plays the game you're interested in and ask if you can use one of his / her empty character slots for a few hours. If you like the game, buy it.
Yeah, you can read reviews and ask the opinions of people that play the aforementioned games. However, what's boring for them may be exciting for you. Try before you buy. It's really the only way you can be sure that you're not wasting your money.
i agree. one of the biggest things that pisses me off about pc games is not having a demo or free trial for your game.
with the way games are made these days, either a huge steaming pile of crap or full of bugs, i hate buying a game without playing a demo. every game should have a demo.
Okay. Went out to buy WoW. Spent 3 hours installing it. No time to play today, but I'll give it a test tomorrow.
I'll stay away from Runescape.
Any other feedback still appreciated. I might try WoW for a few weeks, then buy another one and compare.
WOW, for real. I was in the same boat as you, untill I played the 10 days free trial. The game is light hearted, easily accessible and fun. Goes well along with the college, too. A very good game.
